The power was ceded to the Wardens long ago and while there are occassional blips (ie Wardens getting kicked out of Ferelden) it has remained intact.

No, it has been revoked and then returned.

The Wardens only have the Right of Conscription in Ferelden because the Crown has given them that right.

Singular cases of the RoC being denied probably do slip through

If the Wardens have the Right of Conscription, they have the Right of Conscription. It cannot be denied.

You seem to be misunderstanding where I'm coming from here. I'm not saying the Crown has the power to pick and choose who the Wardens can conscript.  After all, by virtue of the right they've freely given them (the right to conscript anyone into their ranks), the only way to do that would be by revoking the right entirely. I'm just saying that the final say only lies with the Wardens because of the Crown, not because of the Wardens.

"I invoke the Right of Conscription"
"By whose authority?"
"Uh... ours?"

Falls a bit flat, doesn't it?

As for consequences... sure: not being defended from the darkspawn. That's pretty much it. If the Wardens were as you'd characterised them, you'd have thought they'd have tried to re-establish themselves in Ferelden during the Orlesian occupation. For whatever reason, they honoured their exile instead.

I am also curious how the qunari see it.

Probably with a very stern glare ending with the Warden going "You know what nevermind."

Haha.  Well, Sten says they've heard tales of the Wardens.  Peerless warriors and all that.  I also don't see the GW being intimidated by the qunari.  It might simply be the qunari wouldn't make good Wardens, being unable/unwilling to basically give up their beliefs.

I am referring to the Right in general in that particular quote, not simply Ferelden, hence my calling it a blip.  My bad for not clarifying.

That's why I compared it to the rights in the Constitution.  Those rights can be denied in reality, there are just (or supposed to be) repercussions.

I completely understand what you're saying.  I think I looked at this as the power across the continent as a whole, and not simply restricted to an indiviual country.  On smaller scales, the GW power is more closely tied to the favor of the government, but I think it's a mistake to not look at the bigger picture.

The Grey Wardens are held in a respected position, and for a very good reason.  I think for most people if they question your authority, and you flex your GW muscle, they will cave.  Look at how GW will be seen after the events in the game.  People would have to be out of their minds to try and deny the RoC at this point in time.

Eh, I can take em.  I believe I've already proved that repeatedly.  ;)

The Right is likely to go unchallenged until we get a Warden running around using it like an idiot.
