I was wondering, what does each choice do in awakening? Such as like at the start, when you're asked where to send troops. Farms, the city, or trade routes. Any guide on this or something?

not much really i would guess the only two options i have chosen, were trade and defend them all and both played out the same, only thing ive noticed is if you dont defend farms they will riot

I chose to defend the farms in my first game round. Although at one point I did get a crowd of angry people who on the verge of rioting because they were starving for some reason. I chose  the "give them grain" option and the mob went away happy and peaceful. Any other response and you have to fight the civilians. The second game round i plan to choose the defend all 3 option and see what happens.
I think it really does not matter what you choose to defend as the ending comes out close to the same from what I am hearing. I could be wrong but it comes down a personal choice. Protect trade so your keep and the area can keep the goods and money flowing, defend the farms so you can keep the food supply running and not have more civil riots on your hands or defend the city which is vastly understaffed with soldiers.  The hard part is just not enough  "what will happen if I do this" info in the game for you to make the "best" strategic decision.  Good luck!

There are a couple differences in the choices-

If you choose to protect the trade routes, then get the qunari to the keep and have the Lilith encounter and then speak to her at the keep, talk to Lady Woolsey and she'll remark on how you've gotten trade flowing again, and there's a surplus in the treasury. This will net you 60 sovereigns.

You still wind up with a mob at the gate no matter what you choose because Bann Esmerelde makes it happen as part of the conspiracy. I won't give it away, but even if you chose not to defend the farms it is possible to disperse that crowd without a fight, Play with your various conversation options.

As for defending the city, haven't done that one yet. I've always pumped up the Vigil's defenses as well and it's never fallen when I save Amaranthine. (It gets sacked or whatver, but the endgame slide always show it having weathered the attack more or less.)

There seems to be a random element to a lot of these choices, which makes it more difficult to figure out what effects they will have or have had.

This happened to me even though I chose to protect all 3 areas. I guess as long as there are soldiers somewhere on the trade route (whether you're protecting it exclusively or along with everything else), you'll get this outcome.

You still wind up with a mob at the gate no matter what you choose because Bann Esmerelde makes it happen as part of the conspiracy. I won't give it away, but even if you chose not to defend the farms it is possible to disperse that crowd without a fight, Play with your various conversation options.

I believe the mob's reasons for rioting differ based on whether you seek out the conspiritors or let them spring their surprise on you.

As for defending the city, haven't done that one yet. I've always pumped up the Vigil's defenses as well and it's never fallen when I save Amaranthine. (It gets sacked or whatver, but the endgame slide always show it having weathered the attack more or less.)

This is the one that seems most random, as many people have posted that they upgraded the keep all the way and it still fell, as happened to me.

Hmm, I Got the 60 gold from the treasury too(I think you just need to get the two merchants at your vigil)

I had the mob riot on me too even after stopping the conspiritors for some reason.

None of these choices have any impact on the game from what I saw, On my playthru I chose to protect the farms ,still got the riot , the Quanai merchant from the mines and the Lilith random encounter. In game codex said the Vigil fell and all died, end game slides said it held and all were hero's. I ordered the guards to kill the darkspawn messenger, but he also lived in end game slides.

So agian from my game no impact at all.

Yes i was wondering this to so to keep the vigil from falling give guards to wade for him to make his silverite armor

Next pay the dwarf to rebuild the walls. BUT you have to come back to him and get him granite witch is in the wending woods.

Next when you hear the plot against your life ask your options to the guy in the silver armor near the throne cant remember his name  and talk to him about the dark wolfthen travel to amaranthine you'll get a letter pay him 50gold to find the people agianst your life then the nobles wont rally the pesants to riot for food.

Also figure out the gifts that approve the most and you get a better ending for each charater get anders to max velanna to oghren over half and you'll have a happy ending.

I got the 60 sovereigns and I only sent the guards to the farms, and a few to guard the mines and obtain the granite for the Dwarven guy. So I think the 60 sovereigns is for completing the trade route quest in the Wending wood and getting Qunari guy to trade at the Keep.

think mostly the troop positioning affects the epilogue, though I haven't tested this with other decisions there seemed to be a specific section involving my decision to protect the farmers. Wikia suggested troop positioning affects the fate of the Keep too, though they didn't say which was best for the Keep. I think the preparation quests might have a greater impact.

I also got the peasant revolt and I did pay the Shadow Wolf guy and killed the nobles plotting against me.
