Hey everyone, just wanted to share this guide I've been putting together. I've mainly made guides to Mass Effect 2, specifically the Adept, Engineer, and currently Soldier, but I got some requests to do a Mass Effect 1 guide. I started a new game with a level 1Vanguard on insanity and will be playing through most of the core missions and a few of the side quests.

Blog entry on Build Order: http://averagegatsby...priorities.html

Eden Prime:
Gameplay and class Basics
How NOT to use your squad

Citadel:
Chora's Den

Finding Liara:
Mako-ing Around
Geth Armature
Fighting the Krogan Battlemaster

I'll be updating the OP whenever I have a new videos, as well as posting in the replies section. Let me know what you think.

I've enjoyed your ME1 guide, nice to see some attention there. Can't say I much enjoyed the music in this Mako one though! But are you going to transfer the character to ME2? In the start I got the impression that you were rolling a Sentinel, and that you intended to make a Sentinel guide for ME2; does this mean you'll create a Sentinel from the Vanguard? More than enough (ME2) Vanguard guides/videos around (RamsenC, thisisme8 and half a dozen others), and to be honest, I think you covered half the class in the your "when to charge" video.

The Mako part had me rolling xD. Especially the snarky text.
And I haven't seen a guide like yours in a while. I'll be watching it.

Nice on the Krogan, just a couple of suggestions. I find that you can get your biotics to work if they are higher leveled. Also any sort of cryo or incendiary ammo will stop him from regenerating once he's down.

Another trick I use is to take Tali with her AI hacking run out. Hack one of the geth, most of the enemies will turn to engage it.  This works pretty well with the armature fight as well.  Just use AI hacking on the armature and wait for it to kill all of its companions.  Lift and throw at master will work on the armature.

Also noted on your blog your priorities for the build.  I usually stop barrier at advanced.  Once you get a couple of medical exos and a good amp you will have a perma barrier.  Max out your class skill and grab shock trooper when you do Luna (level 20).  It will give some regeneration on your barrier.  You can get your biotics down to around a 14 or 15 second recharge time.  With adrenaline burst you can get two cycles through.

Here is a link to the old mass effect forum gold standard build thread.  http://meforums.biow...35077&forum=123.  Also if you use the ME wiki and do search for gold standard builds there are some pretty solid builds there.  They tend to be level 60 builds but are easily enough adapted to a standard play through.

For a shotty insanity vanguard, I'd go

Pistol 6
Shotgun 12
Assault training 12
Armor 7
Throw 12
Lift 12
Warp 6
Barrier 7
Spectre 4
Shocktrooper 12

That would take you to level 48.  By then you should have a solid amp and a couple of medical exos.  Anything after that is gravy.

Pretty much what The Grey Ranger wrote about the battlemaster. Toxic damage is fairly useless, even compared to other early game rounds its unlikely to give you much extra damage in practice. Any of the DOT rounds for negating his regen is the way to go

Why no bonus talent? It takes two play throughs just to unlock insanity so it's more a special case that you won't have access to a bonus talent of your choice than you will. Vanguards suffer a very serious hit by not having access to Singularity. The early game advantage of being able to sink points straight into it (along with even basic AB) is a massive benefit to vanguards. Also you are best of just ignoring shotguns, they're fun for the singularity, warp, carnage combo but pretty useless other than that.

Never had any need to fight "unfair" if you had kaidan with you(on insanity of course). Two Lifts,Warp, poison rounds, markmen and he is done.Throw has an affect on the battlemaster if it is adcanced throw.Lift works from level one.

The krogans we have know in Mass Effect 2 are bad jokes.Their second life could be annoying in Mass Effect, but nothing else.
