Do you know someone from Brazil? ^_^

Are You a Brazilian? :o

Do you want to know this land?:D

Let's talk Brazilian and South-American stuff here, but not only from Brazil, let's talk Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Venezuela and all South America, share your experiences, curiosities and (why not?) Doubts we can clarify  ^_^

This one was influenced by this very nice thread about Canada.

Feel free to share your thoughts! :wizard:

There was a kid from my elementary school who was from Brazil. His name was Bruno, and he was an ass.

That's not to speak badly about Brazil as a country or its people, but I stand by it.

I was born here but my dad's Brazilian. Big Fluminense fanatic! Listens to Radio Globo's games on shortwave all the time when he stays here.

Only two countries in S.America do not have border lines with Brazil. Which Ones?

In 1964, there was an U.S. Navy fleet standing by the coast of Brazil. Why?

In 1958, in Sweden, a 16 years old brazilian kid enchanted the world. Who is he?

Yep. We speak portuguese. But if you listen someone from Portugal and then someone from Brazil it would seem they are speaking different languages, like listening from an American and then a British :D

While in England, attending to Hampstead Institute Garden, my roomie and a nipo-brazilian guy spoke during the class in a language the teacher could not understand. When asked what language do they speak in Brasil, my friend answered, "Japanese, 'mam" ... all the teacher could say was "Oh, really? How interesting!"

Ronald Reagan used to think that Brazil's Capital was Buenos Ayres!

True. Portugal portuguese sounds more "Spanish" in pronunciation.

other example would be talking with someone from Argentina and then listen to a person from Spain. Argentinian spanish sounds EXTREMELY fast.

Kind of like the difference between French from France and French from Quebec. There are regional differences in accent or dialect within the province of Quebec.

Montreal for example...they speak French very fast and tend to roll their "r".

Eastern townships ..they speak more slowly..I guess because they are more "country" folk. :)

I had a heck of a time when I first started learning the French language there, because we lived near Montreal, I worked there, and when we took vacation it was with the in-laws in the Eastern townships. Had me confused for awhile, as to just how to pronounce certain words. :D

Well, we have over 40°C (104°F) in summer. But in winter the country gets "divided" the northern regions get down to 18~25°C (around 65°F). But the deep south can get close to -5ºC (20°F), and snow can happen in these conditions ^_^

The "eternal summer" feel is more on the north really. The extreme south (where i live), looks a lot like Germany for example. ^_^

And did you guys know that the biggest Japanese community outside of Japan is located here? :wizard:

Only two countries in S.America do not have border lines with Brazil. Which Ones?
A: Chile and Ecuador

In 1964, there was an U.S. Navy fleet standing by the coast of Brazil. Why?
A: To guarantee the sucess of the military coup d'etat that gave us 22 years of  dictatorship. (The alternative didn't help, really)

In 1958, in Sweden, a 16 years old brazilian kid enchanted the world. Who is he?
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka, Pelé!

In Anarchy Online I was in a Norwegian guild..everyone spoke Norwegian but me..lol and sometimes they would forget and speak to me in their language, because they were so used to me..lol I did learn a few words, but .that was quite awhile ago, and if you don't practice it you lose it. :)

No, not much. The main reason is that around 1910 Japan was facing an unemployment crysis, and many began to migrate here to work on agriculture (Japanese have VERY advanced agricultural techniques, but there's not much room for farming in Japan). Since we had a lot of free terrain, many Japanese cityzens began to live here and became farmers. At this time (Since Japanese was a completely alien language to us), they decided to group together and began living in São Paulo.

Then, around the 50's many car factories and electronic product plants went to São Paulo too, this time bringing the Japanese hability to work with technology, making the colony even bigger.  :)
