Soooo, since this is the off topic board, I figured I'd throw this up on here.
I'm doing a 12 page research paper in my college class on software piracy, and I'm wondering, what are all of your guys' opinions on the subject?
Are you pro-p2p sharing or anti-p2p sharing? I'm curious as to what gamers on a forum like this would think :3
Maybe if someone gives an awesomely awesome argument (for or against, I'm using both!) I can cite it in mah papah ^^

This might cause some rules violations if people get out of hand, but we'll see.
In theory, I don't care for it, I support a person or company's right to profit off of what they produce. However, in some cases I have a hard time looking down on pirates, like if money is really tight and buying CDs is a problem, for instance.

To me, it's like prohibition.
Yes, it will cause harm, but no, you will never stop it. The best option is to try and make it cheaper.

I was thinking that too Twitch, that posting a topic such as this may be a bit riskè. Hopefully everyone can remain civil in the discussions though! ^^

Music is not software, might not want to put that in your report
Software piracy is the thief of Digital programs and coding
Music piracy is the thief of Copyrighted Music

This sums it up quite nicely, and Twitch's reply sums up my personal feelings on the matter. There are ways to make it very difficult for pirates but when their methods start hurting legitimate customers then their business starts suffering. Consumers dictate how far a company will go, especially in this economy we are in. Too tired to go into great detail but I'm sure someone will pick it up and run =).

90% of the people here probably pirate stuff.
They just act like they hate it.
That's my thought about it.

True, my mistake. I suppose I should have just said piracy in my title, or left out the music bit. heh heh. ^^;
Thank you for pointing that out Dark!

I'm not sure this topic is going to last long. As I understand it, any discussion of piracy is verboten.

This.
I'm not going to say anything other than that I fully support P2P sharing. And that I regard COPYLEFT media very highly, it is a model that musicians in particular would be very wise to follow.

I'm indifferent towards P2P. I absolutely must have CDs of my music. Sure, I may rip MP3s from them but I like the have real thing to rip from again, just in case. More importantly I'm a packaging snob. I like looking at my collection on shelves and in towers. This is also one of the reasons why I refuse to buy games or music digitally. No packaging makes me sad.
A burned CD is no substitute, even if, by some miracle, the original file had perfect sound quality.
This is a bandwagon I simply never jumped on because even when I'm near broke I can usually scrape together enough cash for a few choice CDs.
Edit: I should clarify I'm against piracy. When I wrote about being indifferent to P2P, I meant the idea of file transferring programming. However, I consider piracy of any kind theft. Even if I wasn't as picky as I am, I wouldn't download music through a P2P client.

I don't agree with piracy or theft; whether it's digital or physical.
Yes, some material is hard/expensive to get hold of, but you just have to bite the bullet and do your best to track it down.
If you want the artist to continue making music, you buy their album/EP/singles. iTunes and Amazon MP3 are great in that you can usually buy just the tracks you want - You're not stuck with a CD you half-dislike and you've supported the artist; Surely that's a win-win situation?
