Quick question. Are the various gems you occasionally loot or find useful for anything other than selling for money. Can they be used as ingredients for herbalism or poison making? I have a bunch and not sure if I should keep or sell. Oh yeah, throw on there a Fancy Vase or Silver chalice as well. Thanks.

I think they're purely to sell. It's kind of like finding gold, only less convenient. I've sold all of mine.

From all the threads I have read about it, it seems you are safe to sell them. I will say however, that there is a use for mid range gems (not sure what counts as mid range) later in them game. I do not want to say why due to spoilers and I also am unsure of whether it actually makes any type of impact or not.

This may be a bit spoilerific, but is there any kind of list anywhere of what it is safe to sell and what you should maybe hold onto for later? If it's too much of a spoiler to put such a list here, how about a link to the list?

You'll need Amethyst for a sidequest (10 of them). You can also trade some gems for exp (not all though). That's about it

Better not to sell any gems. get the camp storage mod and keep putting all gems in there. Later in the game when you finish the Orzammar hub, the mid level gems will be useful. then you can either use them and sell off the rest.

Its garnets, not amethysts you need for that quest.
