Ok when it comes to Mass Effect 1 I keep hearing people throw around words like "masterpiece" and I want to know why? How is Mass Effect considered a great game let alone even a good game? I mean the gameplay is in shambles, the AI is horrible, the missions are repetitive and boring and the only thing that saves this game from being a flop is its story and characters which in my honest opinion arent that great either.

In my honest opinion Mass Effect 1 is the worst game Bioware has ever made.

But please can somebody tell me what was so great about Mass Effect other than its story and characters?

Its the immersion(sp) it sucks you in in a way that most games just cant. It has that feeling of being an epic space adventure and when it does suck you in you end up forgiving its ridiculous faults like utterly shoddy gameplay, terrible AI and an inventory thats like being poked in the eye. Not everyone gets it but those who do, love it. I understand the people who defend it but some of them need to calm the hell down. Personally I adored it, until I played ME2 and saw how glorious it all could be.

LOL. I have to agree with everything you said there. But, somehow it just has had that something that made me go wow and I couldn't stop playing it. Maybe it was the 'first of a kind thing'. I had never experienced anything quite like it before and for that, I guess, it deserves some form of accolade, but I agree masterpiece is a bit strong.

Its more like flawed masterpiece potential, not exact masterpiece. It has heavy faults, but where it excels are characters and story and dialog, and most of all immersive and incredibly detailed Scifi world. Bioware could make dozens of good movies and TV series out of this to compete with the big Scifi names if they would want. I love ME universe.

Even some of the flawed aspects of the game are good if you think about it a bit, like Mako driving because enviroments are sort of realistic. Thats what (most likely) majority of planets in the galaxy are, empty rocks (with beautiful skies on some). Boring, yes, but atmospheric when you imagine yourself there.

ME1 could have been true masterpiece with some gameplay tweaking and more time spent with fleshing out the quests. This is how I see it.

It was pretty progressive for its time. Going back to it it has glaring flaws that after DA and ME 2 I cannot overlook. =P

Because the game sucked you in to its universe. Your actions represent the entirety of humanity on a galactic scale, and you've discovered a threat that endangers everything that has happened in the past 20,000 years. The twists and turns of the plot are so in-depth, I don't want to mention any spoilers for those who haven't played yet, but boy was my jaw dropping at some of the more integral parts of the storyline. Virmire sent chills down my spine.

This.

Also the way they made Commander Shepard a real character, instead of just a voiceless avatar helps a lot. I mean I get why this wasn't done in DA:O - there are simply too many variations on the Warden - while as Shepard is always Shepard, but really having a main character that has a definite personality, and still allow you to make big choices and stuff really isn't something I've seen done in a game before.

You gave me a subjective assertion, however you are objectively wrong.

STRANGE HOW THAT WORKS.

Mass Effect 1 was an okay game to play, but i just quit playing before the end of the game since it just dragged on too long.

But when ME2 came around, it was much better by being quick and decisive to the plot line.

Frankly what I liked about ME1 best was the way it made you feel like you were an EPIC character. There are several cut scenes (I remember the end one the best) where it just seemed like you were everything you had been hyped up to be and more. There are often games where the main character is seen as a "god" by regular joes. I mean in halo you were the epidemy of mankinds fighting force, and all that time you weren't doing anything besides shooting dudes. But here you are practically singlehandedly bringing down a plot to destroy galactic government.

Also shameless plug for points :D

ME1 was considered a masterpiece because no one had done storytelling in that way. Not sure if there was a 3rd person shooter RPG before or a very notable one so ME did that first. Also, for the 1st time you were not just a voiceless face clicking 1,2,3,4 for a dialogue choice, but instead Shepard had a voice and the dialogue wheel, IMO, made choosing what to say much quicker and easier. Even though the combat is not where ME1 really shines, its story and universe just suck you in and the tough decisions you have to make really make you think. Add in the fact that ME is the first game to have continuity into the 2nd game, and your decisions matter even more. The game was so incredible for me that it was the first game I actually did 4 playthroughs in.

I would like to agree with everything everyone has said but would like to add that for me, its the type of game that you really have to work at getting all the content in that game. For example, I didn't find out about Garrus's mission in ME1 until a few weeks ago, and I've spent about 150 hours in total playing Mass Effect 1.

At times I felt like I was watching a movie where I got to pick how the main character reacted to situations. When you have to make that decision on Virmire... at that moment I felt I WAS Shepard having to make that heart wrenching choice...

It was pretty intense.

Although I disagree with most of the above, it is because people were not looking for/enjoying creating their own character to the extent that most BioWare games require you to (something I enjoy but many people do not). That Mass Effect took this out of the player's hands to a great extent and instead made them just another character, but who you occasionally get to direct is considered a great boon.

For me, though I enjoyed the story enough to finish it, it never was intense nor did it suck me in like BioWare's other games. I never felt the keen connection to my character that I felt in their previous games which so greatly increased my enjoyment of the experience, but it just comes down to how you play and how you view your PC, I think.

This. It was very good for its day. Newer games show the flaws in older ones naturally. It really brought something new and fascinating to many people. When a game does that it doesn't need to be perfect to keep a special place in peoples hearts.

I dunno..I found ME to be rather clunky..didn't like the dialogue wheel either..
