Other than the presentation, I don't get it either, it's one of BIowares weakest games.

Never cared much for ME1 either. The main plot was basically a poor copy of KOTOR1.
Just replace Saren with Malak, the Reapers with the True Sith, Spectres with Jedi, and Conduit with the Starforge.

Ok when it comes to Mass Effect 1 I keep hearing people throw around words like "masterpiece" and I want to know why? How is Mass Effect considered a great game let alone even a good game? I mean the gameplay is in shambles, the AI is horrible, the missions are repetitive and boring and the only thing that saves this game from being a flop is its story and characters which in my honest opinion arent that great either.

In my honest opinion Mass Effect 1 is the worst game Bioware has ever made.

But please can somebody tell me what was so great about Mass Effect other than its story and characters?

NOSTALGIA PLAYERS LIKE NOSTALGIA, PLAYERS WILL GO ON AND SAY MASS EFFECT 2, WAS THE MASTERPIECE WHEN MASS EFFECT 3 COMES OUT.

Sorta like KOTOR, even though the game has hella bugs, and glitches. It was a great game at the time.

I am merely bringing up a genuine topic for discussion, if you disagree with my opinion then please tell me why.

Although I disagree with most of the above, it is because people were not looking for/enjoying creating their own character to the extent that most BioWare games require you to (something I enjoy but many people do not). That Mass Effect took this out of the player's hands to a great extent and instead made them just another character, but who you occasionally get to direct is considered a great boon.

For me, though I enjoyed the story enough to finish it, it never was intense nor did it suck me in like BioWare's other games. I never felt the keen connection to my character that I felt in their previous games which so greatly increased my enjoyment of the experience, but it just comes down to how you play and how you view your PC, I think.

I totally agree with this, this would have to be one of the big things that killed the immersion for me.

It was very good for its day. Newer games show the flaws in older ones naturally. It really brought something new and fascinating to many people. When a game does that it doesn't need to be perfect to keep a special place in peoples hearts.

Hmm not really, the only thing Mass Effect brought to the table was to make the conversations more cinematic, which if you take off the gloss it is still the same old dialogue system you see in most RPGs, only difference is that your dialouge options are organised in a ring which makes for easier and quicker dialogue choices.

However when it comes to third person shooters I could name a heap of games that are much older than Mass Effect and have far better third person shooter mechanics than Mass Effect.
