But I do support an official function, it should really be a matter of course.

Yes please. Would give a lot more purpose to selecting "block this user." I was surprised it wasn't already set up this way.
Agreed. Most boards do have an ignore feature and I wish this one did, as well.

Thinking about it recently it occurs to me that this would actually be a fairly easy feature to implement. Since when we post we see an Edit option for our personal posts, clearly the system is able to identify us as the page is rendering. That being the case, it should be simple enough to add a check for ignored users and use them as a filter on posts that show up. It would only require an extra database table and some UI elements to manage it. Again, I'd be happy to help implement this if manpower is an issue.

I had some back and forth PMing with Stan, his take is that an ignore feature would tend to allow trolls to propagate since instead of reporting their posts users would simply ignore them. I understand this position, but personally I'm still interested in the feature. It's not always "trolls" per se that I wish to ignore, sometimes some users, while remaining within the terms of use of the site, will still be...anti-social? In any case, in other contexts in which I've used the feature I've been quite satisfied.

I also can see where he is coming from, but as you've stated it isn't just about the ones who deserve justifiable reporting but peoples whose posts irritate us. Yes most of us are adults and should be able to 'ignore' them mentally, but sometimes it can be hard to do so.
No doubt there are some people on the social site that would love to ignore me if they had the chance. Fact is the feeling is mutual of course as I know that some of those people do my head in just as much which is why they are currently flagged as blocked in the hope that one day the 'block' function will be upgraded so that it blocks the viewing of posts by the individual blocked.
The SWTOR boards have the ignore functionality and whilst I am aware that is probably done by someone in the Austin division, why can't it be implemented on the social network too?

If they are so worried that it would let the trolls continue unabated all they have to do is script it so they get an alert after x number of people have blocked the same individual. It's a bit more work but quite doable.
Adding my support to an ignore button.
That's a great idea! And while it might be more work, it wouldn't be THAT much more work.
The way I see it now is as a really simple table structure. Something that might have entry_id, user_id, ignored_id. Creating a script that runs every night or so and creates a report on sums of ignored_id would do the trick as Elps describes, and let the mods know who is being (presumably) the most offensive of board members. When you look at it that way, it'd absolutely aid in policing the forums from some of the language that, quite frankly, at times gets over the top (and I know for sure I am guilty of this).
C'mon Bioware! Adding an Ignore button would be an event that would truly benefit all of the community.

Try private messaging Chris Priestly, I think.
Yeah, I tried that twice back in April and got no response. I can try again, but let me suggest that everyone with an interest in this issue also do the same. I don't mean to be spamming Chris, but if he's unaware of this thread then he likely won't see the support it has. But if several people ask him to come here and comment, perhaps we can engage him in our conversation.
I'll try him again anyway.

OBVIOUSLY as this issue continues to be ignored by Bioware and staff, they haven't thought it through very carefully. I think if a situation is bad enough to report a person for stalking you (which I have by the way) or for acting like an ass towards others...the ignore feature is a required and normal feature of ANY OTHER website I have ever visited.
Is Bioware afraid they will lose customers...or is this yet another one of EA's silly edicts?

And this would be EXACTLY why I had not answered it till this point. Obviously since we are not making it happen NOW NOW NOW this is a big conspiracy by the evil empire because we hate our fans and are money grubbing jerks.
Since this question is now answered, this is closed.
