Should I aim right at the target or above. How much do I need to arc my shot up for distance are are there any other pointers on aiming these things? I'm an engineer player who just started a soldier and I use a bonus talent that pertains to my class + I didn't feel like using inferno ammo when I could use an active ability.

I have often heard that aiming above the target is good when he is in cover. The ability will arc around and hit things while they are in cover. If they are out of cover, you can aim directly at them.

aim above when they're on cover or in all circumstances? And slightly above or far above?

At close ranges, try to aim for the head or torso - that should do the trick there.
Anything past that range (let's say anything above effective shotgun range) requires you to aim higher than your actual target - the farther away your target, the higher you have to aim.

I can't give you any failproof specifics on aiming over longer distances but you could take this as a rule of thumb:
- Medium distances (a large room): Try to aim for about 1.5-2 times your target's height.
- Long distances (long corridors etc.): Try to aim for about 2-3 times your target's height.
You basically imagine that your target is taller than it actually is and then aim at the imagined height of your target.

What complicates things is your position in relation to your target. If you're above your target, you can usually aim lower than you would normally do at that distance. Conversely, if you're below your target, you should aim at a much greater angle so that you can throw your grenade up there.

The main thing you can do about this is practice. If you've got the hang of it, you can basically forget about all this stuff here and use your grenades on instinct. Believe me, it's not exactly very difficult.
