I must admit I was wondering if they found it by scanning for eezo and if a Cain was amongst it.

Honestly, with current technology, a hand held nuke launcher is completely doable. They had tactical nuke artillery shells back during the Cold War, I'm sure they could shrink it down to the size of a 30mm Grenade shell, possibly with extra kick to send it further away.
