That's more epic fail on Shepard's part though since tanks (and, presumably heavy heavy mechs) are designed to be able to ignore suppressing fire.

I think I understand why they didn't put this in the final release of ME2. I don't think it's actually a bug.
I think, in reality, if some whiny **** backhanded Shepard, the results of that would either be 1) a trip to the hospital and treatment for PTSD for the Asari (on a good day) or 2) a body bag for the Asari (on a bad day). And then a lot more body bags after Shepard shot his way out of Illium. A bombing run by the Normandy on Nos Astra on its way out is also a distinct possibility.
