Have you noticed it? It's a trend. All these ships are not big, but are built with cutting-edge (and/or alien) technology, have firepower and durability unusual for their size and all have some kind of stealth system.

Indeed. Sacrificing for the greater good started 50,000 years ago when Vigil turned off the life support of prothean staff one by one until only the top scientists remained. If that didn't happen, and if they didn't in turn sacrifice themselves as well by going to die a slow death on the Citadel, then the Reapers would have already wiped out all spacefaring life again. When humanity first poked its head through the Charon Relay, we probably would have been just in time to see the Reapers finishing clean-up and been subsequently obliterated too.
