Or simply a tightbeam mass effect field, where the orange color is just for visual reference (similar to tracer rounds).

what ive been wondering all the time is.. if all of the squadmates and most of the enemies use omni-tools just as well, then why would shepard be the only one to have it?

The way husks change could be considered part of the Reapers "art".

And that means he can use it...bastards won't know what hit them.
