Well, in space Sovereign used his tentacles. Much more flexible than what is really a kind of chest-mounted cannon. It's like if you tried to aim your torso toward an enemy versus trying to point a hand.

well I just checked the trailer again, and I saw the only times it missed (the thresher maw) was when it went underground, when it COULDN'T hit the thresher maw (it was hanging above the laser) or when it was turning its laser toward the maw.
It never really aimed at and missed the maw...

You'd still have to got an awfuly aim if you can't hit THAT giant of a target at least once.
