So ive literally just finished my first playthrough of awakening. Im rogue dalish elf archer. i have some great equipment which really increases my attributes especially dexterity which is well over 100 now (cant remember exactly). I found when i was playing through that although i checked every merchant in every town, none of them sold any items which really made me think (got to have that!) so i just ended up saving and saving and saving until i think ive got around 400 sovereigns now. Most of the good armour i found from corpses or chests, like slippery ferret gloves. I bought the Misery bow from Wade i think. I didnt really need to buy any health, lyrium or stamina potions whatsoever as there were also plenty of these throughout the game.

Anyone else find that the game just offered so much money you didnt know what to do with it?

Loved the game though - i know a lot of people are dissapointed and yes it will never be as good as origins. But i thought it was great as an expansion.

Did you try rune crafting? That is a massive drain on your savings. I think the reason gold is so easily available is solely for use on that skill. Otherwise, you hardly need to spend anything.

I did runecrafting a little but to be honest because im an archer i didnt need any weapon runes and didnt bother with the armour runes much either. i normally have to mages in my party aswell so didnt use them for that either.

I just remember with origins saving up for ages to get the Far Song bow, Andruils Blessing and Ring of Ages, 3 of the most expensive items in the game which took a lot of work to afford.

There were some very cool items i did see in awakening through but just not for my archer rogue build.

If you try and optimize every member of your party you're bound to lose all that gold (there are several very nice mage/rogue items worth 100-200 gold). Add the cost of runecrafting to that and you'll find yourself out of sovereigns quick.

No kidding. If you plan on making tons of high level runes for all the spaces in your weapons and armor then you'll use up tons... I spent 500 sovereigns on my first character screwing around with RC.

Dont go past grandmaster level runes. You spend less than half the money.

And I'm still wondering why there's a weapon rune with +5% ranged crit...

Anyway, unlike Origins you actually FIND most good stuff in Awakening. I can only think of 2 exceptions worth mentioning: Stormchase Gauntlets (try those on a AW) and Voice of Velvet.

... Come to think of it, is there a cap to +x% crit/backstab damage? I crafted 6 +20% crit/backstabdamage runes for Velvet and Rose's Thorn but didn't really experience the jump in damage I would expect from +160% damage...

I was wondering the same. I spent a bit of effort crafting a couple dozen of those runes and realized that I have never found a single enchantable bow in either game.:pinched:

I don't know why we can't make gold as in make the runes and sell them for profit or something like that personnally would like to buy and use items then resell back just to use but can't do that you lose your arse doing that.

Never tried this myself, btut according to the wiki, it is possible to craft runes for profit. See the Exploit section on the runes-page.

Talking about rune crafting, I hope if they continue this mechanic that they give two grocery lists. One for the component immediately below the tier you are trying to craft, and another for a list of the number of basic components needed to go all the way from basic to the desired level. And then also automate the crafting of something like a grandmaster rune so that it checks if you have enough basic components (rune stones, etc,) and then allow you to craft the grandmaster rune directly.

Back to the topic, I found quite a few worthwhile items in the store that would be beneficial to any character. Especially items that significantly boost constitution and stats and regeneration.

As for armour and weapons, I really prefer finding these in game rather than in store. Let me hoard my gold for other purposes. I've really become disenchanted by the current trend to load up stores (and grocers in this case :) ) with the most powerful weapons in game. But many people seem to like it so I guess that's why they are doing it. I prefer to earn it through adventure and battle rather than shaking my coin jar.

I'm only at about 16 Sovereigns, i need 50 for Ser Wolf, and 80 for the stone walls. I could use a money cheat now lol.

Well you need 80 gold to upgrade the keep's walls (along with the granite deposit). If you want to have The Dark Wolf get your information you will need 50 gold (of course you can kill the Dark Wolf or say no to his offer, (but accepting his offer opens up different side quests.)

So you can spend 130 gold right there. But as it has been said Runecrafting is a money pit. And of course you can go shopping for your companions. But some of the best items are found.

Take and sell everything from the companions in origins. You should have more than enough money for the stuff you need to buy.

Just fighting a bit in Kal'Hirol I picked up at least 60 sovereigns, a lot of the guys are dropping a sovereign and a half (1 sovereign and 50 silvers). I can't remember if the rest of the game is this generous with money, since with my other character, money was never a concern.

So... you didn't want to buy items like the Stormchaser gloves and Clamshell Armor?

What about *tons* of rings and amulets?

Perhaps the best mage staff?

Definitely the best dagger, Voice of Velvet?

Yah... I needed *more* money!!

Its actually much quicker to do the merchant-junk glitch if all you want is money.

For any money woes, just do the potent lyrium pot trick.

The components for a potent pot costs less than the lyrium potion when you sell it back. You can easily make 1,000 gold in 15 minutes.
