Dont get me wrong i think the Illusive Man is one of the best additions to ME2 both in terms of his role in the grand plot device of ME2 and the credibility he (and Martin Sheen) bring to the game as an art as well as a game. However during my 3rd or 4th play through (with a ME1 thrown in there) i started to wonder if anything he says is the truth. All of the forced missions he sends you on (Freedom's Progress, Horizon, Collector ship, and derelict reaper) he has by far more knowledge than anyone else, and doesnt even try to be subtle about it afterwards.

He knew before anyone else that freedom's progress had been attacked

He somehow knew Horizon was about to be/in the process of being attacked and that Ash/Kaidan was stationed there

For the Collector ship he talks about how some small turian patrol completely disabled the ship (somehow without damaging the hull at all) before they were all wiped out (of course nowhere to be found conveniently, with turian reinforcements "supposedly" on their way, which i seriously doubt). The more i hear him talk about it the more i'm positive he knew it was a trap all along (which isnt really a stretch cuz he pretty much admits it after the level), but i'm also suspicious that maybe he had communication with the collectors, because there is pretty much no way he could know all of this about the ship and the fact that it is a trap without some communication with the collectors. He might have been genuine in his intentions, allowing shepard to walk into the trap with full faith that he could survive it and gain knowledge about the Omega 4 Relay, but he obviously knows how much the collectors want shepard as he engaged in a bidding war against them for his body from the shadow broker.

But any ways yeah those are just my thoughts, I'm not entirely sure why he would go through so much trouble to keep the truth hidden from shepard despite spending a fortune to bring him back.

He's the Illusive Man. The question is why you ever trusted him at all.

Yeah, we're supposed to be wondering what he is hiding from us.

Oh, and he does say that he knew the collector ship was a trap. He knew it because the turian distress signal had a corrupted "secondary encryption channel" or some such technobabble. You know about the corrupted channel because EDI spotted using a method that TIM came up with. So that's how he knew.

Now as to why telling Shep, and only Shep, could possibly tip off the collectors, I don't get. Also, what more could the collectors do? Set another trap? I mean, come on.

Basically, in ME1 Cerberus was a standard "cartoonish super villian" group that did insane experiments with little to no reason, other then "kicks and giggles" (why get a colony wiped out with Maws to "see what they can do" and then wipe out ANOTHER marine detachment, again "to see what they could do?"). In ME2, they seem less insane, but TIM defiantly seems to go to group therapy with Dr. Evil and Mr. Burns.

I'd like some awesome twist in ME3 where it turns out that TIM was also hiding extremely critical info from Shep and everyone else so he could come out on top. Sure, he's the only one trying to take out the reapers, but he also has data that would make the fight easier, only he won't use it because he wouldn't get as much benefit as being the sole conquer (like he couldn't have gotten the collector base if the Alliance/Council knew about or where part of the suicide mission).

Because he lies to and manipulates you? Because he cuts you off from your allies so you're forced to depend on him? Because he's an egotistical control freak who will risk your life to give himself more control over the situation? Because almost all of Cerberus's experiments were massive failures? I could go on, man.

TRUST NOTHING. DO NOT EVEN TRUST THAT HE IS A MAN.

IT COULD BE A HOLOGRAM HIDING THE ILLUSIVE WOMAN UNDER THERE.

Oh, and you assume Miranda DOESN'T KNOW? Or that the Illusive Woman couldn't deceive Miranda in all her ILLUSIVE WOMANY-NESS?! No, it's all a conspiracy, I tell you!!! A CONSPIRACY!!!

I was never that comfortable with Cerberus or TIM.. Of course in ME1 you hear about all the crazy **** they did.. Then of course in Jack's mission you see more of what they have done.. He tries to convince Shepard that he is a good guy too but it is obvious that he is just using Shepard to get what he wants like he uses everyone else..

I like the character, think they did a great job with him. His eyes creep me out. I don't trust him because he's manipulative and because of Shepards history with Cerberus. He's going to lie straight out or by omission if he can get away with it.

Because he lies to you throughout the entire game. His name is a dead give-a-way that he is deceiving you for his own purposes.

because he's that reaper renegade faction agent canceling the plans of the reapers because they didnt find consensus some million years ago for "project ascension" to eradicate every variable in the universe and thereby creating god. emotions were the crux on which their AI minds crushed and so they planned to do a chimera of a AI and an versatile organic beeing.

humans are genetically versatile as mordin states and therefor the human reaper. illusive mans faction goes the other way not "consuming" a whole species but making individuals of that race "grow" more and more towards the point of ascension and then making them into some reaper clon.

shepard thereby is illusive mans top god candidate and hes making shep stronger by fighting the reapers achieving two goals at once (reapers not becoming their plan and shep getting better)

the big star behind illusive man is a gigantic neutron-star based computer (event horizon quantum thingies (read alistair reynolds books) and is to be "connected" with shep..therefor the reaction to sheps descissions ^^

my own little theory ;)

I just dont understand why, i feel like the whole game tries to set up the idea that the "by any means necessary" renegade philosophy of Cerberus is a viable and equally effective means of action as its paragon alliance counterpart, and in keeping with that idea i find it hard to believe that TIM is some sort alien or synthetic evil monster, just a man who likes to get things done without the "red tape" (I swear i have never heard the phrase red tape more often than while playing ME)

I see cerberus as a possible employer and ally for renegade sheps in ME3, but i still just dont understand why he would purposely deceive Shepard, the one person who could make Cerberus more accepted to the rest of the galaxy. Sending his billion credit project into trap after trap just doesnt make any sense

After the Horizon mission TIM admits the entire event was planned and staged by him.

He chose the place and time for the battle.

Then he spilled certain information to the Alliance and thus lured them to the Horizon. Once the Alliance presense has been confirmed, and he probably received a report from EDI that Mordin's on the vrge of creating the countermeasure for the Seeker Swarms, he spilled certain information to the Collectors. Then he called Shepard, before (!) the attack Collector attack commenced, because you can't expect to get to the planet from another constellation and catch the Collectors.

Shepard's name was the bait. Then TIM sent in Shepard in person to shut the trap door.

After the Collector ship mission TIM again admits that he provided Shepard with false background information in order to render possible leaks inaccurate. Decieving the enemy, again, in order to prevent them from denying entry to the Shepard's team.

TIM excels in manipulating his enemies as much as allies.

And the sad part is, I would've been totally onboard with this plan if the I-Man had just confided in me.

That's the downside of working with a man with glowing eyes and... *wipes tear*... trust issues.

I wouldn't be surprised if ME4 involves wiping out Cerberus promptly after the Reapers are taken care of.

Yeah thats what im saying. You would think the Illusive man would know his people well enough to realize that someone like shepard would be up to the challenge of hitting a collector base, and would probably be better prepared and more capable of performing better

I get the feeling TIM never really wanted to stop the Reapers. He just wanted to scan the technology on the other side of the Omega-4 Relay. Stopping the Reapers was just a means to that end.

His information is likely purchased from the Shadow Broker. You learn about the SBs information Network in ME1. Also he LIES to you about Liara, telling you that Liara now works for the Shadow Broker, when in fact she is trying to kill him. (It's quite possible she at one point became involved in a shady deal with the SB). TIM lies to you about basically every mission he sends you on. He imperils you and your squadmate's in order to invoke an authentic reaction to a hostile situation. Because he gave you life and an advanced starship you become his puppet. The final decision at the end of the game on the collector ship is likely going to have a radical implication on your playthrough of ME3.
