I am able to stay impartial through most everything, but seeing Zynga spam vote its way past: NCSoft; Infinity Ward; Square Enix; Rockstar North and now handily beating Valve, really pisses off the gamer in me.

Sad to say. But BioWare vs Zynga - Zynga with their spam for votes will win

It depends. Bioware has plenty ways to reach their fanbase like Zynga does. It remains to be seen if they'll bother.

Outside of Zynga, I don't think any developer in this competition cares about it. Which begs the question, why should we?
Really now?

That's all fine and dandy but everyone on Escapist had likely already voted before he showed up. The promotional stuff should be done HERE.

Doing some big promotion for a semifinal on what's in the end no more than a private portal would be quite pathetic to be honest. For sure not very classy.
Blizzard put a sticky official post on their forums begging people to vote, and they still failed lol.
Now, finals are a different matter. We'll have to see.

So asking people to vote in the semifinals is not classy but doing it in the finals is?

I'd say yes. Spamming your customer for something other than offering a service or a product (actually asking them to perform a service for you, that, mind you, includes creating an account on a third party unaffiliated website) is frowned upon basically in every industry, so it's done only in very special cases.
now, reaching the finals of a competition might be considered such a special case. But if the company isn't able to even reach the finals out of it's own popularity without directly begging their customers for votes, then I'd say it'd be pretty farfetched to spam us.
No serious marketing team would ever approve that, so I'm not surprised that the only ones that sent spam directly to their customers in order to beg for votes before the semifinals are Zynga. They're a ragtag amateurish developer that has no real notion of the etiquette of promotion or the rules of customer satisfaction.
Dealing with marketing for a living, I'm pretty sure that if i proposed such an action to any of my higher profile clients without showing a chance for immediate and effective promotional results (IE: "we're already at the finals, if we push a little bit there's a solid chance for us to win" ), I'd get das boot in das face.

annnnnnnnnnnnnd BioWare HAS WON AGAINST BLIZZARD!!!!
A TRIUMPH!
Now... the true battle against filth; walking away from the battlefield of glory pertaining both great nations, BioWare has defeated Blizzard. There are many dead, known traitors but all in all, an honourable battle. Yet now, a common foe emerges victorious against an ally, Valve. Zynga was the name of the devious, treacherous nation and now they want more blood, as well to hold the staff as the king of developers.
We must not let this happen, brothers, even now our deafeated foe, Blizzard is required to aid in the defeat of this diabolical climb to the top. Rally the allies! ready the guards! let every man, child and girl-gamer know, that the time is now to strike. For Freedom of ad spamming! for depth of a great story! and awesome graphics! now! Lead on...
May your stories be great and the victory forever known as the day BioWare and allies, shut down the menacing Zynga corporation! *cheer*
Right on!!! Congrats Bioware.

I can see the unprofessional nature of what Zynga is doing but what they are doing is bringing them the win. At the end of the day though, this contest is really not important enough to ****** off your fans over.

Glad to hear it, did Valve win by a good margin? Hopefully so, I hear the Facebook fanatics had Zynga out-pacing everyone for a time.

In the case of Bioware vs Valve, though, my choice would be still obvious. The makers of some of the best RPGs in the world with a talent in storytelling and the creation of deep and interesting characters
or...
The respected but also fairly run-of-the-mill developers of a lot of quite dull shooters (and of an overrated puzzle game), that never learned decent storytelling and refuse to learn to develp on one of this generation's main platforms, publicly bashing it to cover up for their own lazyness?
Obvious choice is obvious.
