How did Ashley or Kaiden survive on Horizon when Lilith and all those around here were taken?
Plothole big enough for a reaper to fly through

Every time you see a plot hole, just remember that.

Dumb Luck.
A real plothole is why the Asari Councilor hasnt Vulcun mind melded with Shep to see the visions for herself.

The collectors ditched Ash or Kaidan when they retreated back to the ship. The collectors wanted to salvage what they had because Shepard was wailing on their ship with artillery.

Kaidan is obvious. Biotic.
Ash is soracist loyalist that her mere presence is poisonous to any BUG EYED FREAKS Aliens.
Ash is so

Since "it's in the script" isn't the answer you're going to accept, how about "Kaiden/Ashley were the farthest from the landing zone.

Probably he/she snapped out of his/her stasis right when the ship took off. Possibly the immobilization of the seeker swarms is temporary.

Kaiden/Ashley have this special ugrade in their armour. It's called the C-22. It's nicknamed "Plot Immunity" by Alliance Personel.

I'm still surprised that Bioware didn't just let whomever on Horizon get taken by the Collectors. It would have given the players more motivation to rescue them, and avoided all the hate they garnered from their lame excuse to not join the crew.

Stop making sense. STOP IT!!!
Heck, convincing them that there was even a super dreadnought in the first place let alone that it's a Reaper was a challenge even though there is a distress signal which shows the ship landing let alone the smoldering crater left behind when it took off from Eden Prime.

Not this time. They're numerous and strong enough to both sting and lift GRUNT.
Kaidan makes sense, Ash doesn't. And the reason the rest aren't gone is they were interrupted.

Well, you see. The Collectors loaded up about half the colonists in the ship before having to take their Union mandated lunch-break, probably stopping at Ash/Kaidan.
This is also the reason why, despite having a ship capable of housing thousands of collectors, Shepard fights about 50-75 of the them. Reapers, Inc. only authorized a handful of workers to work overtime for the double rate.
Gotta keep costs down.

Isn't it obvious? Ash/Kaidan were chasing the Praetorian. A bad habit they picked up from you.

For me its far less of a stretch than Shep coming back from the dead. Sure they used all that fancy technology and spent billions on it, but coming back from 'dead as dead can be'? Its much tougher to swallow than Ash/Kaidan being left behind by the collectors.

There were some frozen colonists in one of the buildings that were not taken by the collectors (shortly before you reach Delan's hide out). I guess Kaiden was just one of the fortunate few who didn't get taken.

They were wearing heavier plot armor.

I could accept the excuse that they only took half the colonist, but Ash/Kaiden wasn't that far away from Lilith, who WAS taken by the Collectors. Did the Collectors simply walk past them and take everyone else in that general area?

They hid behind a box, they got sloppy after freedom's progress

The collectors just thought they were really ugly statues and ignored them
