Now let me first start out by saying that I played a bit of DAO and thought it was really cool but then most of my friends said to just rent it because apart from doing the good and evil playthroughs there wasn't replay value, so essentially they said "Just rent it".
Now with Awakening out I'm thinking that now would be a good time to get it considering the original  game and the expansion are roughly 20-25 hours each, thereby giving me a huge game.
What I'm asking is for everyone to give me some opinions on why I should:
a) Buy it
B) Rent it
Good reasons would be welcome as I'm really torn on this game.

DA:O is much longer than 20 hours if you do everything, and there's plenty of replay value.

I can't say anything about the console versions of DAO, but most sites rate the PC version higher than either console version so I'd say if you truly want to enjoy DAO and have the PC specs for it get it on PC without a doubt... plus all the fan made projects for the PC DAO have been amazing *if you get the right ones* ;)

a) You should buy it because you can put in plenty of hours in it, especially your first time! There's more to it than just playing either good or evil. For one, you get different stories by trying out every type of origin.

Try to play as different genders. As a male you can romance Morrigan, Leliana and Zevran, and if you play as a female you can romance Alistair, Leliana and Zevran. Depending on what gender you play, you get to act in certain ways. Besides all that, it's also fun to try out the different specs.

B) If you rent it you probably end up buying the game after all. :P

You got to be kidding me if your doing the original game at 20 hrs? might be possibly if you dialogueskip, autolvl, run through everyting, nah even then it would be hard.

On your first playthrough if you play and explore (characters and places) i would say around 50 hrs.

a) Buy It.
The first playthrough is about 50-100h long. ( Depends on the difficulty lvl and if you do all or most quests or not) I agree it gets a bit boring but now I'm playing it for the fourth time ( first time solo) after 4 month break and it is still quite good. Mabye because it motivates me to get all achivements ( now I have only 85%)
Awakening is imo great. Much schorter that the core DA but gives more fun. Definitely worth playing a few times (I must say it is quite buggy at the moment and the difficulty lvl is silly.
So yes, Buy it.

Any game that can give me easily 40+ hours of fun(with lots of replayability) is gold in my book. Totally worth buying it though if you gonna buy it, buy it on pc.

Definitely buy it. DAO isn't the type of game you buy once then shelve. You can replay using different team members for a different experience. You can explore different treelines on the magic front. Would you use Cold, Heat, or a mixture of both? How about the full Stealth line for the Thief? Haven't tried that yet, but it has possibilities. How about a Thief that doesn't use Stealth? That would make the game harder to play. Each game you play could be entirely new as to how the team will perform. There are lots of different scenarios you could use that makes replayability possible.

Are you an RPG fan? Dragon Age feels more like roleplaying than any other video game I have ever played.

I'd highly recommend buying it. There is a ton of replay value, in my honest opinion.

It is definitely worth buying. Note: if you buy a second-hand copy, the DLC codes will have been used, so that's NOT a bargin unless it's almost free. Purchase a new copy to get the DLC (stone prisoner and warden's keep ARE worth the cost in my opinion).

I got this game in November, and I have played a couple of hours almost every day. Currently playing through the main campaign for the 5th time, with a view to taking this character all the way to the end of the "Awakenings" expansion pack.

I'd buy it, new, even for a console.  You don't want to get icky othergamer germs inside your Xbox or PlayStation.  They cause red rings of death or yellow lights of despair.

You know, my only experience renting a product on optical media some nine years ago has forever scarred me.  It was a DVD of, er, um, well, Charlie's Angels:blush:   Anyway, someone had spilled, to my best guesstimation, honey all over the DVD.  Fortunately I noticed it before placing it ever so gently into the tray of my precious DVD player.

Never again.  I mean, VHS players were a dime a dozen back when, so who cared if the rented copy of Back to the Future you shoved in was in fact some kid's half-eaten PB&J sandwich?

Anyway, that's why you should buy Dragon Age: Origins.  Only not on VHS.

I will say buy it. It has its shortcomings but its really worth it. OP is correct that actions/decisions within the game doesn't have very significant depth/ramifications iin a tangible sense. Plus, the gameplay has balance/documentation issues. Looking beyond, pretty much everything else is a plus for me.

LOL, I logged 84 hours 2 minutes 9 seconds with my first character just doing the original campaign, and another 7 hours 13 minutes 44 seconds so far on the expansion.  That's not including my additional playthroughs with other characters.  Someone sold you a bill of goods, buddy.

As with others, I have no way of knowing whether it's worth it on console, but I would highly recommend buying it on PC (PC Gamer's 2009 Game of the Year, after all!) if your system can handle it.

The core game is definitely worth it - easily hundreds of hours of potential gameplay there, but I'd stay away from the latest patch & awakenings for now; breaks far more than it fixes.

Origins is definately worth it. The best RPG I've played to date because of the depth of the characters and the extent of your interaction with them as well as the variations to the story. I've found loads of replay value in it through playing different scenarios with new characters and am always finding new things. I feel I've had value for my money from Origins.

Buy it, it really worth the experience. It has some replay value since you will have different experience with each different classes. Not counting the mods if you buy it on PC. Each playthrough is about 30-60 hours not counting DLC and expansion. First playthrugh maybe will last 55 hours. I recommend buy it on PC.

Rent it if you can dump lots of straight hours into it, but never want to play through another time, and dont care about DLC or expansions. Otherwise, buy it.

The console version doesn't suck. If it did I wouldn't rate it as the best game that I bought last year, and to this day hasn't been topped by any new releases.

I would honestly say rent Awakening. It's really short, even if you do all quest ( I missed two companion quest because of bugs) and took me about 22 hrs. I'd say not having runecraft as PC really added another 3 hours because runecrafting is quite the chore and really only worthwhile to melee if you're trying to see how high your damage can get (669 for my rogue on a backstab, which was 6 intensify runes, Weak Points, level 35, Shadow Form, Song of Courage, and Tainted Blade on Velvet and Rose daggers). Otherwise, would've probably been around 19 hours (and I really took my time). I'm on second playthrough, but not entirely hyped about it, so I think I could've rented this and been happy with the saved loot. It's really about your budget and perspective, so good luck and have fun either way!
