True I did think when Uncharted 2 came out would be more in depth DA is better than that.

Even for an NES game it was bad if you can beat a game in a day

Amazing lore. Amazing characters. Amazing game. Buy it. The different classes, and different origins, really boost the replay value of this game if you love RPG's.

Can't say anything about Awakening, but I'd say that if you like RPG's, Origins is probably a "BUY." If you've ever played anything like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, or (oddly enough) Mass Effect, then there's a good chance you'd like this game. Granted, all of those games come from the same company, so they all share some very fundemental things in common, but every recent game the Bioware makes is built upon trying to improve or modify existing game mechanics. In short, unlike Final Fantasy jumping from ATB bars to real life play and botching it up (granted, it was their first attempt, so I'll give them props for trying), Bioware tends to make consistently good combat systems and general game mechanics because they try to build upon WHAT WORKS.
As far as how the plots for their games are arranged, all of them tend to go along like this:
Intro chapter: Used to get players aquainted with the controls
Chapter 1: starts to get the plot set up and rolling
Divergent Chapters: 3-5 chapters that are all sub-plot chapters that tend to build the world and story in pieces. They can be completed in any order as none of them sequentually match up.
Convergent Chapter: All those sub-plots finally come together to bring the overall plot back on track and towards the finale.
Final Chapter: The end. The big fight. The big climax. Rough sex. The whole sha-bang.
In general, Dragon Age is one of Bioware's better titles. Now, because they plot is... well, a plot, don't expect anything major to change. They can only allow so much freedom. The true value of replays is playing as different character classes since they all play completely differently. Also, as an added bonus in Dragon Age, you have an background story THAT ACTUALLY HAS SOME RELIVANCE IN THE PLOT!!!!! Now, granted, it's not too much, but in those different areas you visit, if you're character is from there, you get to see how you've affected that area and how they expect you personally to fix their problems.
Long answer short: If you're an RPG fan (especially a D&D fan), it's worth it.

I've been into role-playing for as long as RPG's have been around (and DnD before that). Dragon Age is the first game to give a really immersive experience that pulls emotions into the game. If you love to role-play and like strong stories, DA:O is a "must buy" in my opinion.
If you just like to play games and defeating enemies is your thing then rent the game and see if you like it.
There is a huge amount of replay with this game. 6 Origins x 2 genders is just the start. Different specialisations, different difficulty levels, plus different mix of party companions and different decisions can create a very different game on each playthrough. The main quests remain the same but these can be done in different orders with different parties to give a very different feel to the game.
I'm on my 6th playthrough and haven't completed any of them in less than 90 hours so far.
I wouldn't recommend buying Awakening. I hated it and also ran into loads of crashes so ended up deleting it and reverting back to Origins + patch 1.02.
My partner plays DA:O on xBox 360 and my PC version is a far superior game.

Which begs the question: Who cares what it's rated? You either like it or you don't. Other people's opinion shouldn't influence yours. Or perhaps I should say: the "general audience's" opinion should in no way influence yours.
To answer the OP: Yes it's worth it, moreso than most games out today. BUT the game is a bit TOO long imo. I don't feel like playing it again. I'm not sure what makes it different than BG2 which is like 100hours long, but I'm not motivated to play through it again. But if you shouldn't base a games worth based on replay value....DAO takes longer on a single playthrough than most games do in 2-3 playthroughs. Replay is not so much a concern then.

I would argue at this point that it is not worth the money - not because the game is bad (which it isn't), but because EA and/or BioWare have demonstrated that if they care at all for their fans, they have an extremely poor way of showing it. Bugs, bugs and more bugs that continue to go unfixed, patches that break the game, expansion packs which were seemingly released without any play-testing, community events created for mining data instead of rewarding fans, lack of direct involvement, extremely poor official support that seems content to pass over the majority of problems raised (often related to billing issues, i.e. users paying and receiving no product)... all of these add up to create what for me is approaching the antithesis of good community relations and good business practice.
The way I see it is this: usually, the only way corporations listen is if people vote with their dollars. Therefore, if you don't want to support this sort of incompetence, you shouldn't buy their products - not just BioWare's, but all of EA's games. This is not a problem specific to BioWare; many of EA's recent major releases have also had issues with quality, bugs, lack of service (massive downtimes at game launch, rendering things unplayable for users), and abysmal community relations. If you don't want this to happen, then spend your money on a developer who cares about you - and maybe companies like EA will change their tune when they realise it can impact their bottom line, and that treating people like **** is not actually going to get them sales.

Your friends should be shot!
Seriously though, there's replay value if only to go through every origin and the shortest amount of time I've heard spent on a playthrough was over 30 hours...
But the roleplaying opportunities!! *SQUEEEE* Even playing through the same origin again, you can have a completely different sort of character/story! I'd definitely purchase it!

I'm really surprised at how long you all are saying the playthroughs last (my friends must have been high when they told me 20-25 hours).
Thanks for the info, I'll look into getting it as soon as I can.

I have no hesitation in saying that DA:O has offered one of the best values for money of any game I've ever purchased. The sheer length of the game, coupled with the high replay value, means I have probably spent over 250 hours in it so far, through four playthroughs. For £30, that is ridiculous value for money.

What kind of question is that? Is Dragon Age worth it? Of course it's worth it.
Financially: Yes
Creatively: Yes
Badassery: Plenty of it

Dragon Age is definately one of the better games I've seen in past years and is still probably worth that $50 bucks you would pay for DA:O itself. I don't think it is as great as some of the hype you often see in these forums, nor do I believe it is in any way takes the throne in the CRPG genre in general, but it is both decent and original enough to make me recommend actually owning a copy of it.

A better question is "are consoles worth it?"
The answer is no. They are a money sink, even with renting, buying used ect, they don't come close to pc.
I have a few console systems and have tried games which were done very well but seldom go back to them. Whith pc you can enjoy a game for years by simply modding or downloading mods. Check out http://www.dragonage.../categories.php and all the cool stuff you can ad to the game, and this is only the begining.

Man, you are asking question answer to which is totally subjective plus depends on factors unknown for us, like your financial situation, and have formulated it in a way like you expect some objective answer...
So my opinion is that a game is good. I would maybe say great, but surely not GREAT. In some aspects it is just mediocre, and in some even worse. But overall I think it is well done. So I would recommend you to buy this game.
Also my first play through took me something like 90 hours, most of which I've really enjoyed. I would say it was worth the money even if I wouldn't play it any more.

Also, you are asking in the wrong place. Don't you think that asking this question on some other RPG forum would give less biased answers (or "average answer")? [Try for example Obsidian forums.]
