I've started over again so I can do a better job, but still am having trouble with the tactics part of it -- I can't figure out what you do with all the pull-down menus and so on. I got the strategy guide (what a tome!), but even that doesn't explain things so that a dunce like me can understand them. Does anyone know of a tutorial for the tactics stuff, or is anyone planning on doing one? Thanks.
Tactics Tutorial?

There is a group devoted to tactics. There you can find links to the Tactics 101 posting, etc. which can be really helpful.

I have the same problem. I started a dwarf rouge. After the first part I'm in Korcari wilds. I'm in group now with 2 rogues and 2 warriors. I have no idea how to control them. They just stand there and hinder me more than help. All I can do is pause the game , give them a command, pause the game , give a command, pause the game, give a command and repeat this over and over again. But how to effectively use tactics, no idea. Sure I can make them drink a potion when there below a certain amount of health, but that's about it.
They should have included a tutorial on how to control your party. Because now, this game is broken to me.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I'm honestly angry. And it's not so much at Bioware I'm angry. It's at sites like gamespot who give this game such good reviews.
If this game was as good as they say it is. You should not have to search for tutorials. The game itself would do it.

Left side: Conditions
Right side: when conditions are met, this is what they will do
Tactics at the top have higher priority then the ones below

Thanks, candew and nhonny -- both helpful responses. Tekruo, a game's no fun if you don't have to put some effort into it . . .

Well.. not much to it... basically it is :
if "left side" do "right side"
can't be more simple than that.
However I never actually used it, I always keep AI disabled since I play on nightmare and no matter how good you make it... it just won't be enough.

I'll be looking for that tactics 101 tut after I post this, but I haven't been able to find an answer to this. Whenever I try to set the conditions and responses on my party members' tactics slots, more then half the time, the options end up showing in red, which I'm guessing means they're not valid/active. Can anyone explain that to me?

I use a group of 2 warriors, 1 rogue (Archery) and one mage.
Usually I let the Rogue Start with Archery but when in CQC, uses 2 weapons, The mage atack only in Long Range / and support the group. The 2 warriors (1 is my char) are Weapon and Shield, so they always need to drawn attention to then... So they need a good defense and armor...
One thing important is to add a comand in your mates to let then use a potion, or anything like this to heal tehnselves, (mine chars is set to 25% of health, and mage 10% of Mana), it's help us to focus on another matters...
But always pay attenton on the status of your team, cause thay can be killed if they cannot use potions, (And it happens a lot, almost all time by paralyze spell)...
I prefer to select stun / Paralyze / disorient atacks first, so it let you gain some precious time to do some good damage. Sometimes you can configure these skills with multiple chars in different times, so you can have a stunned foe more than one time at 1 combat, and it helps a lot... (But unhappy, the bosses this tactics won't work, cause they resist almost everything...)

I gave up and turned tactics off, always found it did something I didn't want, I just micro-manage everyone now.

It doesn't mean that. Red means that it's an aggressive action done on an enemy.

Here's a sample of some simple, yet effective tactics.
For Alistair, if he's tanking.
On Self : Any - Activate Shield Wall
On Self : Any - Activate Threaten
**** That's so that when the dumb lug turns them off for some reason, he'll actually turn them back on.
If Health < 25% - Use greater health poultice.
If Health < 50% - Use Health Poultice
**** You gotta do them in this order, otherwise he'll just use a health poultice no matter how hurt he is (since it'd take precedence.)
If surrounded by three enemies - Activate War Cry.
On Enemy : Nearest - activate shield bash
On Enemy : Nearest - attack
**** These are just samples. The first one checks to see if he has enough enemies around him to make it worth using an AoE ability. Then you let him use shield bash. Then you finish finally with attack. You always have to finish with an attack command, otherwise they'll tend to just stand there if none of the other conditions are met, or because their stamina is out and they can't do any of the special abilities.
Be careful with how many special abilities you turn on in tactics. It's easy to get your warrior to unleash all his specials on one enemy, and then be out of stamina for the rest of the fight, leading to omnipresent misses when you attack.
For a mage, do a few
On enemy : using magic - activate crushing prison/petrify/another form of hold.
On enemy : nearest - use lighting/arcane bolt/etc.
DON'T do things with friendly fire in tactics! Morrigan will happily blast her cone of cold through your party to hit one genlock at 10% health... Those kinda things you gotta do manually.
Other than that, it's a very fun system to fiddle around with, though not as varied in use as the one in Final Fantasy 12. You could script that one to endlessly keep a battle with a summoner boss going, it was awesome.

Ooh! Thanks for the info. And yeah, I definitely don't do friendly fire stuff in tactics. That's actually why I first started messing with it to prevent her (and my main character, when I'm not controlling him) from friendly firing my whole party to doeath.
