I have the key from the hungry deserter in Ostagar, and have been hanging around the camp, waiting for night that never seems to come.  Will I have an opportunity to get into the chest at some point?  The strategy guide mentions the quest no a list but then never gives the details of it, that I can find.

After you go to Duncan you'll go and do a little mission. When you come back its night and you can get into the chest then.

after you do the ritual, you can run around the camp and do stuff. It will be night then.

i completed the quest, but I didn't get the key. What gives?

You were too compassionate. You need to ask him what's in it for you if you got him food and then he'll offer the key as a bargaining tool.
