I don't see where so much mmo hate comes from. It's like when MMO's are mentioned, everyone starts chugging Haterade. I could care less for the kids they attract but every other game type is no different. Just sit on xbox live multiplayer games for 10 minutes or any other game out there like it and see what you find. I'm shocked at how tame these boards are to be honest.

Agreed.  I see a lot of it stemming from WoW-hate.  I've never played WoW...for a reason.  But I've seen a lot of people who froth at the mouth at the mention of "MMO" and then mention WoW.  There are a few others I see that are brought up as reasons for it.  Problem with this, of course, is that WoW is not at all the definitive MMO.  not by a longshot.  Swearing off all MMO's because of, say, WoW, is like swearing off all FPS's because you hated CoD or something. :P

But maybe I was just fortunate.  The two MMO's I played at length, EQ2 and VG:SoH, had excellent communities.  Granted, I've seen a lot of garbage being churned out as well...but that's why it's so important to research an MMO before jumping into it.  Learn about the developer behind it, see what kind of features are in-game, check out the community, etc.

For me, it helped/helps a lot that I already know what I look for in an MMO: Large, beautiful worlds without zones/instances (or at least with incredibly large ones ala VG:SoH, where each zone is the size of a massive continent) is the major one.  Ever since VG, I simply CANNOT stand zones and instances...that game actually caused me to cancel my sub to EQ2, because I just couldn't go back to being boxed in. XD

But yeah...seems to be a knee-jerk thing from most people.  It's too bad, because there are some MMO's out there that are worth the sub...and a sub is perfectly reasonable when the game is constantly growing and changing (for those with a problem with that).
