So there seems to be a few rpg/arpg games being released over the next couple of months. Can any of the season veterans give any estimation on how long the market will last? Should I just get all of the rpg games coming out now to last me until the next boon arrives? Is there any real cycle to rpg releases eg: 12-18 month between games? Having a look at future releases there does not look like much coming out after Alpha Protocol (2010 Q2) next year and the release of D3 who knows when.

Why should you get all of them right away? Play one, then browse and choose the next one.

It sounds like Dragon Age itself is going to take up a bit of time as well. It seems as if its going to be around 60 hours for a single playthrough!
Here I was thinking that I could breeze through with each origin. I think I'll be lucky to fully complete a single playthrough.

I have a feeling we don't see many of these because 1. They take alot longer to churn out than a FPS or Action game, because of how vast they are. They have multiple characters, hours of dialogue, etc... 2. It's probably still a very niche market.. Mass Effect is probably the closest to getting a broad audience for a RPG.
So to answer your question, after this batch of games we've been waiting for for upwards of 2 years comes out, I wouldn't expect to see too many for at least a year.

As a gamer who has played all kinds of RPGs since the days of Ultima it's safe to say that RPGs never where as popular as they are today in the west. A few years ago, western style RPGs where dead, there was NOTHING to be found for years but then the MMOs kicked in and rekindled the interest in RPGs. Games with the Scope and Production Value of Fallout 3, Mass Effect or Dragon Age where impossible to sell in the late 90's/early 00's and great efforts like Anachronox failed miserably when it comes to sales. In these day the only good RPGs came from Japan but that is pretty much reversed today. Asian RPGs today are technically outdated, boring and devoid of any inspiration let alone innovation.
Bottom Line: Good times for Roleplayers who like western style RPGs! But no one knows how long this will last.RPGs are probably the most expensive games to develop (apart from MMORPGs) and as soon as these games sell a little less than now, we won't see them anymore. So buy now and enjoy.
On another note: There are not very many developers who can handle the developement of a quality RPG. Having played Sacred 2, Divinity 2 and Risen recently there's no denying that these games a VERY rough around the edges. The Triple A products come from Bioware and Bethesda. The Witcher was very good though, so there's hope even for small developers.
