When you get right down to it, it's not God that tells us to have faith; it other people that stipulate that we must have faith.  And generally, those other people are usually the priests, clerics, and True Believers of the religion in question.

Sort of makes them like used car salesman, saying whatever it takes to get suc-, erm, potential customers to sign the damned contract.  "This is a great deal for you!  Trust me on that!"
