No one's mentioned the turian counselor?

Ah yes, "villains."

EDIT: Yes, I consider him a villain.

"Ravel Puzzlewell"

She may be 'evil'; but she's not really a villain in PST.

Ravel was a great character, but not really the villain of the story.  In a way, the true villain is the Nameless One--and a great one.

Loghain: Killed his son-in-law to gain power. That's evil mate!

Why is that evil? His motives are debateable, and I'm more inclined to say he did it out of self preservation for Fereldan. He blatantly considered the King a fool, and rightfully so. It's one of Loghains evil actions I can understand and justify o:

Speaking of Planescape:Torment, I just wanted to say that Morte was also more entertaining than all of the DAO companions combined.

Oh, so very agreed. I felt horrible - HORRIBLE - when you have the flashback when you beat him so badly you crack his skull. I hated my PC for that.

I think lohgain was the best villain of the bunch because I actually built up a reasonable hatred of him. As a Cousland warden, him being allied with Howe was enough for me to dislike him. After the whole Ostagar thing, my hatred of Lohgain became cemented. He was the only one of the listed villains that I actually looked forward to killing.

The Architect. A very interesting character, with an even more interesting agenda. His intelligent Darkspawn will either end up becoming an entirely new race accepted by everyone (well, most), or they'll end up conquering all of Thedas and doing, well, whatever they do when bored.

I also liked his attidue.

Loghain: his is the story of Darth Vader. And Darth Vader is consistently voted the greatest movie villian of all time.

No further explanation needed me thinks.

As to Irenicus . . . I actually found Sarevok to be much more interesting. His scheme in Baldur's Gate was pretty good. Irenicus was too over-the-top for me in comparison.

And like Darth Vader, you can make him see the error of his ways!

Of those listed, and based on the books much more than the game, The Architect. He's actually Evil with a capital E from the point of view of the intelligent races. He wants to see them mostly exterminated, and a certain percentage of the surviving women enslaved and turned into Broodmothers. At the same time, he presents his case as Doing Good, and thinks he's the savior of his race. He mixes half truths and outright lies to manipulate those he wants as allies, and he never gives the Big Evil Laugh to let the Good Guys know that he's a Baddie. He'll speak to you in a kind, reasonable tone of voice as he tries to persuade you that genocide and rape are for the best.

Loghain is right up there, but in the end he's making bad choices from good motives. His ends, if he could have achieved them, are good. It's really his failure and poor judgement that make him an antagonist.

Irenicus, as villains go, was made of Epic and Win.

Well, I think all of those listed are fairly good, (though as others have said I think Malak was more just your stereotypical villain, though I do really like KOTOR) but overall I liked Saren the best as a villain. But here are reasons why I like all of them.

The Architect: A fairly good bad guy. What he wants is actually a good thing, but the price that has to be paid for that end is way too high.

Loghain: I remember on my first several playthroughs I generally hated Loghain. I thought he was just power hungry. But after sparing him and talking to him in my party I got to understand him much better and felt less hatred towards him. Then after reading The Stolen Throne I actually like him and now generally spare his life all the time. He just made a bad choice because of his complete distrust of Orlais. All he wanted to do was protect Ferelden. (Though going through the Human Noble origin I still hate him because even after you tell him Howe betrayed your family he still keeps him around)

Saren: He feels that there is no way to beat the Reapers so the only hope is to work for them. Though with what we know from the books he was power hungry. It just ended up turning from him wanting power to just wanting to survive.

Of the options listed, I felt like Malak was the best developed. It is very easy to deliver a mindlessly cruel sith lord, and Malak did it flawlessly. My second choice would be the Architect, while his character wasn't thoroughly developed, I felt the pacing of his plans and his role in Awakening was better delivered than Saren/Loghain.

In my opinion, the best Bioware villain has not be listed. And that is Sun Li the Glorious Strategist.

Malak if you include his development in the Kotor comic. Agree with scyphozoa otherwise. The guy deserved to be called Glorious Strategist.

I'd like to suggest that people in general like bad guys who they face as end bosses more. Malak seems to be getting a lot of votes here, possibly because he was the face for KOTOR and the guy you spent the entire game trying to beat. That makes him seem more bad ass than, for instance, Loghain, who is your antagonist for a good part of the game but who is always overshadowed by darkspawn threat.

Saren gets a lot of bad guy points as well, in this thread, which is consistent with being the end boss theory.

The Architect only takes part in an expansion, maybe that makes him feel less like a villain? He's not the end boss either, so it seems natural that people don't consider him the best.

In my opinion, Malak is definitely the most villainous. Does that make him the better villain?

Are you kidding me? Anyone who isn't voting for Malak is crazy. He gets my vote because A) he's in KOTOR, my favorite series of all time B) he has a g-d damn Sith armada behind him waiting with baited breath to blow things up into oblivion at his command C) sure mages can shoot lightning in dragon age and biotics can hurl people across long distances with throw, but you know what force related thing they can't do? Choke their opponents, the most iconic sith power there is, and finally D) he has a lightsaber, nuff said. I don't care if you hate humans or are some great general or even a dragon who commands an army of ugly gremlins/goblins. A lightsaber can cut your junk and your face off.

And Malak destroyed at least one planet and probably more. Can any of the other ones say that?

Loghain. He's the most morally ambiguous.

Of the options given I find Malak to be the most "evil" in a traditional sense, the other three all have good goals but the means of accomplishing those goals are questionable. That being said Saren was my favorite antagonist of the bunch. He was a tragic figure, he tried to save life in the galaxy by allying with a reaper and wound up being indoctrinated instead.

Of all the Bioware villains though I like Irenicus the most followed closely by Master Li.

Irenicus, Bioware has yet to create another villian who would screw you over as much and so personally as Jon would. It also made the game more believable for people playing evil bastards, you where not trying to save anything but yourself.

In that list, I'd need to say Logain. I never played KotOR, but from the sounds of it Malak is pretty stereotypical. At first, considering the way it was presented, Logain just came off as weird to me, I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to feel. After I went though and played the game again though, I started to understand a lot better. A lot of what he did made a lot of sense to me. Only problem is, there isn't much contact between the protagonist and Logain. Really it's just three times:First at Ostagar before the battle begins, second at the palace in Denerim when you first arrive with Arl Eamon, and third: the landsmeet. Maybe they were trying to make him seem distant because they wanted you to focus on the other quests like Broken circle and nature of the beast. I felt it'd be better if he didn't feel so distant later on in the game. At first, it does a lot to intimidate you. He's Ferelden's greatest living hero with the support of the capitol city and surrounded by the nation's army. You're a warden who is lucky to be alive and is accompanied by a dog, a would-be templar who is confused about his identity, and some strange witch who could very well be out to kill you. Later on, though, I feel there should be an encounter or two if you go to Denerim when you only have one nation left to recruit or something like that. Other than the lack of contact, i think he's really quite good. Just a bit mis-represented.

Sure, but at that point is he a villain/antagonist anymore? =P
