I still have my old computer (3 years) and it can run all newer games just fine. I only bought my new rig because 1) I had the money 2) I like max graphics.
I even have an older one with XP for BG2 and other older games that can't run on Vista/W7, and it can run all but the more heavy games such as Crysis, EU3, Farcry etc.
So... no, you don't need to upgrade each year. You only have to buy a PROPER rig to begin with, which doesn't necessarily have to cost a car or something. Just know what you're buying or bring someone with you who knows.
Anyway, I vote Black Isle Studios... just to be different(yes, they're no more around, but they made the best RPG ever: Planescape: Torment)
True, you don't need to upgrade every year. Bit of an exaggeration on my part. My own upgrade history over 15 years is 486dx266, 233, 400, 1.47, 3, and then my current quad core. I've built all but the first one. I don't bother with store assembled machines, there's usually some component that is really cheap and disappointing in them.
My current rig simply supports my 30" monitor.
FYI, Obsidian is kind of the reincarnation of Black Isle. Shadow of its former self though. It was a dark day when Interplay collapsed, took Black Isle down with it and iirc, almost wrecked Bioware. Interplay was the publisher and owed Bioware substantial royalties for the use of the Infinity engine. Just off the top of my head, my info could be mistaken, it's been 10 years.
PS:T is generally accepted as the undisputed best rpg of all time. Unfortunetly because games don't age well, many of the new generation of gamers will never have the pleasure of hearing Annah say I love him (TNO) more than life itself in the Fortress of Regrets.
Talk about a game that could satisfy rpg elitists...and still using the clunky 2ed AD&D rules
Some of the threads in this forum make me sick. "I want multiplayer for ME3." OK, kromm, turn the rant off.
