the Xenosaga trilogy great storyline to it and the story links together just great
Shadow Hearts the first one is awesome with a surprising storyline that isn't your typical save the world story and has some nice twists. To bad the sequels aren't as good as the first. The second one is ok but the third was pretty poor and way more campy than the previous two.
Final Fantasy 12 I haven't really played to many of these but out of the ones I did play 12 was the best I liked the political stuff in it and all the power play
these are really the only Japanese RPGs I really enjoyed

The Shin Megami games are so awesome. The kids have lots of issues but I love the monster transformations and the characters have life to them.
Disgaea has lots of content. Lots of stuff to do.
Monster Hunter! It 's so reflex based but it totally fun.

VIII was alright, IX was a bit worse, X was a step up, I actually liked X-2 even if some people didn't.
Chrono Trigger is also still awesome.

But I'm not big on JRPGs, and I don't think I ever really have been. Those games I mentioned above are pretty much all of the ones I've played. Other than like.. Pokemon and stuff, which I'm not sure count.

This. Hard. SMT has been and always will be my favourite JRPG series. And I suppose I need to mention Mother 3. I will tell you, the game's story is far more resonant and powerful to me than even some of BioWare's yarns. It's such a beautiful, melancholy game... but I digress. The last FF I truly enjoyed and what I feel is the pinnacle of the series, FFVI. I remember the first time I played it, popping the cartridge in and watching the greatest story my fragile, seven year old mind had beheld itself to, and the first time I truly considered gaming a story-telling medium. Oh yeah, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absolutely one of the best games I've played in my life. Astonishingly wonderful art design, incredible story, incredible characters... one of the best PS3 games I've played.Kerridan Kaiba wrote...

Wow, I just gushed over the series something fierce. But really, they're very good games, and I think they address a lot of the problems people seem to have with JRPGs in general.
Also, Valkyria Chronicles is very good. And Demon's Souls, but that's barely a JRPG at all.

Some favorites off the top of my head are both versions of Persona 2, Valkyrie Profile, FFVI, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Final Fantasy Tactics, Grandia, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Chrono Trigger.

I love complex, challenging combat and most games these days don't really offer that..western or eastern.
Also:
Pokemon
Final Fantasies( i just got a PS3 so I've been playing them for the first time). Easy combat but they have great stories.
Resonance of Fate looks promising. The combat is supposed to be pretty strategic so I'm looking forward to that

As far as this generation goes, the only two JRPG's I've liked were Lost Odyssey, which was truly epic, and Tales of Vesperia, which was more amusing than I expected it to be. Beyond those two, pretty much every JRPG I've played, such as Eternal Sonata or Star Ocean IV, has greatly disappointed me.

Edit: I'm an idiot and actually thought LUNAR was created by a western company to have a japanese "feel". Whoops no way, it's JRPG all the way. Thanks wikipedia.....

The only thing that really bugged me is that two party members are the most annoying kids in the world, and the character designer decided that boys should look like little girls. I'm not even joking.

I enjoyed those. Phantasy Star III often gets a bad rap, but I thought it was okay. Phantasy Star 4 was good in many respects. I liked how the first three games were directly linked to PS4's plot. I also lurved Rune and it was neat seeing Wren again.
What kept me from enjoying Phantasy Star 4 as much as I could have was Alys' death. I loved the first Phantasy Star because it was ahead of its time in so many ways. Dragon Warrior was a clunky mess compared to it. It had a proper party, characters with personality despite a severe lack of dialogue compared to modern RPGs, and amazing graphics for an 8bit console. It also had a female protagonist. That was virtually unheard of back then. I still remember how great it was to see the typical burly male character was demoted to sidekick status for once.
Enter Phantasy Star 4: It was like the series had gone back to its roots. There were familiar music tracks, characters, in-jokes and references galore. It had Alys, a female protagonist that was strong, but kind underneath a superficial greedy streak. Plus, she was an adult with a history; not another teenager. Then Alys dies and Chad takes her place. <_< I didn't hate Chad. I still finished the game and derived a great deal of enjoyment from it. However, that plot twist soured everything that came afterward. It was a bit insulting. More importantly to me, I found Chad and his coming of age story much less interesting. It's such a common tale in RPGs and anime. I expected Phantasy Star 4 to do something a little different and it failed me.

Final Fantasy I, IV & VI
Chrono Trigger (have it in the original box and everything that came with it)
Secret of Mana.
Illusion of Gaia

Were the ones that I played back in the day(and the ones that I can remember at the moment).

Oh boy, don't remind me about the dreams. It's a very interesting initiation into them with the first being a story on a small sickly girl who dies. And then it purely gets more depressing from there.Artemis Tau wrote...
I haven't played a lot of JRPG's but one that stood out for me was Lost Odyssey. It is an awesomely huge game with a great story, and there are short stories in it that seriously cause manly tears. If they had a book with just the short stories in there, I would buy it.
The only thing that really bugged me is that two party members are the most annoying kids in the world, and the character designer decided that boys should look like little girls. I'm not even joking.
