Soooo I was just browsing the interwebz and I found this article...

finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/109237/if-you-were-billionaire-for-five-hours

It's a nice little read, and what the guy tried to do with the money was really kind, but the question in the end had me thinking...

"What would you do with the money? The ground rules are that you would have to give the money back — and whatever you bought or invested with it — after five hours."

What would I do with that much money for five hours, and then have to give it up?

I'd probably find a way to invest a third of it, spend another third of it on whatever I want annnd then donate the other third. Though I could probably afford to buy BioWare with a portion of that money too! Buttt, alas, I would have to return it all. ; )

It'd be nice seeing how it'd feel though...to experiance all of that. :3

What would you do?

Help my dad fix up his house, pay off financial aid, build a kick **** computer to replace my outdated one, buy the 2011 Shelby Mustang, and split up the rest between a savings, future children's education, and sisters and parents

I'd purchase the bank that made the error, just to confuse the hell out of the situation

Really? That happened to you? :>

And @Onyx, that would be awesome. Just announce that you want to buy them out of the blue...they'd be thinking, "WTH!" hahaha

That interest thing was the best idea. Just let it accumulate some interest, and at the end of the day you could give back the original 88 billion and you'd still be a millionaire.

I'd buy a lot of things you cannot return/track, like pre-paid Visas, gift cards, video game DLC, etc.

Ideally, I would cash out as much as I can and burn it for the experience of recklessly destroying vast sums of money. That is assuming they don't expect me to repay the balance.

I'd buy me, my family and my friends a small beautiful unoccupied archipelago, I'd build my own shooting range up to 1000 meters with steel gongs, steel silhouettes and of course guns and ammo for the rest of my life! What else do I need?

Ok, I'd spend a few billions to the cancer research program to get rid of this nasty problem once and for all.

First I'd set myself up so that I can support myself and my parents for the rest of my life in a comfortable fashion. Then, in some manner or another, I'd give away the rest.

I would place bets with it. If I win, I have the money to pay them back. If I lose, well then good luck ever seeing that 88 billion again.

i would throw it all in a huge pile and burn it, to see people's reactions.

If you lose you get free room and board at one of the cushy government retreats

I'm curious... to all the people who are saying they would spend the money on family and such... how would you go about pulling that off under the parameters of this question? The main reason I picked a nonsensical answer is because that kind of altruism isn't easy to pull off when the money has to be returned in five hours. I don't know about everyone else here, but I'm not an accountant capable of producing millions at the drop of a hat.

That guy in the news story had a decent idea, and he still had to give it all back.

Ideally, I'd have a small network of Swiss bank accounts to make sure they'll never see me or the money again.

However, as that will likely not be the case, I would buy or start a private military company. Let's see how they'll get their money back then.

You can't just hand someone $88 billion. This would all be done electronically. Just make some appropriate online investments. The easiest of which is to buy up some gold futures.

Strictly speaking, you could probably spend all of it on gold/oil/coal/platinum/copper futures and then trade at your leisure when the time is up.

Yeah, it's too bad the bank said no when he asked if he could still donate the money to the charity. :pinched:

I'd buy myself a damn fine house. But 5 billion away to live off of until I died, and give the rest to BioWare for even more awesome RPGs.

I'd buy EA so I could be the Overlord and make them calculate pi all day.
