Because beards are only for real men.

As elves are portrayed as feminine creatures and beards look more masculine.

I've always wondered.

If i recall right, David Gaider's post on this subject amounted to, it's just to make them (more) different in appearance from humans.

The following was posted on a journal reguarding armpit, body, and facial hair, or lack thereof, on elves (to be specific, Zevran). Please disregard my errors in typing, I was very caught up in my geeky art history moment.

elves don't have thick body or facial hair. One could compare it to being like peach fuzz. The only conclusion I can gather as to why this is is due to their origins, having descended from immortal ancestors, and thus maintaining a more childish physical countenance. The effects of the quickening are what make the elves look more human, thus explaining why the alienage elves have stubbier ears and flawed skin, and I'm guessing that facial hair is the only thing that could separate the elves from the humans at such a point.

PS: God damn you Katana, steal my thunder. >:(

Hmmmm... I think if Michelangelo left pit hair out of his paintings, then I can too! He is the Master after all, he should know what's best. XD

Oooh! If only I noticed this before I posted. The lack of body hair in michelangelo's paintings are believed to suggest innocence or the guise of it, since the only naked figures you see are representative of divine beings or demons (which don't look so human at all, so I suppose that doesn't matter). The complete nakedness of the men, lacking body hair and clothing, is the purity of man as God's creation.

:]

...

...all this talk is starting to become strangely ironic, seeing as it's mostly focused on Zevran...

EDIT: I forgot. Full post is here in rooster's journal: http://rooster82.dev...70238/#comments

Blame the various Keepers, as they seem to have control over all things with roots....

Don't think I've ever heard of any fantasy world where elves have facial hair. I'm more disappointed that female dwarfs cannot have beards, they are so unusual in fiction no one could be sure what they look like.

Because only men can grow beards, and while and elf can be male, they aren't 'men'.

If elves could grow beards they'd just be weak skinny dwarves.

Seriously though, it's lore, created by tradition.

Female dwarves are already ugly enough, you want to give them beards too??

Maybe not full on "Duncan" beards, but maybe some fuzz on some male elves might look alright. Facial hair is hot sometimes.

It has something do do with Duncan.

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!

Duncan has so much beard hairs that the elves aren't able to grow any lol. The universe needs to follow some order of equilibrium so with Duncan having that many facial hairs, the elves are unable to. Its just about balance.

So Duncan's beard counts out a whole race?.......Interesting.....Could each hair on Duncan face count for one male elf that can't grow facial hair?

:-p

RE: female dwarves and facial hair

If it recall, I think in somewhere in the D&D universe (to include the number of other settings, such as Forgotten Realms etc...for you Nukenin), they mention female dwarves growing beards as well. They are not nearly as epic as the beards the men can grow, but they are beards none the less.

I prefer the Terry Pratchett approach to dwarves, that there are indeed dwarf women but it's hard to tell de difference and that "a large part of the dwarven courtship rituals involve delicate and circumspect inquiries to attempt to discover the sex of the object of affection".

I don't care much about female characters looking good (the avatar being my only attempt at it) so I thought it would be fun, but I guess it wouldn't be very popular.

You've never heard of the World of Warcraft?  :o

It's okay, some folk would be envious ye lasted this long.  :P

It's apparent (especially when playing through the dwarven commoner origin) that dwarves enjoy similar concepts of beauty in their women as any human, so beards are definitely out.  Some male dwarves (apparently more so in the lower castes) seem content with stubble or even no beard at all.  Jury's still out on whether them elf-skinned pantywaists are proper dwarves at all, but there you have it.

Elves are for women and French people. And French-Canadians. They may as well be French.

Why can't male elves grow facial hair?

So that any male/male "intimacy" will be considered "not gay if it's an elf"

Actually, it's the other way around. Facial hair isn't cool enough to touch the faces of elves.

*Duncan's is the exception of course...all hail the Beard of Duncan

I don't see the big deal. It's not like there aren't ethnic human groups who can't grow facial hair at all. Look at the Native Americans.
