Frankly it's not that challenging. Your main risk is getting hit by snipers, so if you know they're coming, save before you engage them.
Obviously as far as weapons, the Specter gear from the rich achievement are the way to go. For armor, make sure you have enough shields or damage resistance to survive sniper hits and the occasional rocket. Colossus gear is generally the best you can get, and is available once you get the Kassa Fabrication license.
As far as general strategy, almost every encounter can be beaten by being conservative and not rushing in. If I remember right, the only part that gave me any trouble was the Krogan at the end of the Liara recruitment mission. once you pick off his geth assistants, he will start charging, so be prepared for that and save some powers to weaken him, use obstacles to your advantage.

It also depends on what class you're going to play. Its not really harder its just that everything uses immunity, regens HP, and friggin takes FOREVER to die. Well, at least when you're starting off.
Its easier if you're replaying a character. The spectre weapons kill better. Standard weapons make for some tough times, starting out. Would suggest having someone with biotic abilities, either Wrex, Kaidan or Liara.
Colossus is the best armor. You won't find that until around level 50, or you can ask for it from the DLC Bringing Down the Sky.
And yes, snipers hurt. If you see that red line, duck and cover. They will one shot you, full health and shields...

The Colossus armor you get from doing BDtS does scale with your level,
though. I did that mission rather early on and asked for some Quarian armor. I got Colossus III. I didn't even know you got anything less than Colossus VIII.
I wonder if I'm one of the few who opted from the Predator L/M/H armors from Armax. I hated seeing my shields go down, and it had a higher shield rating than the Colossus armor.

When I went back to play ME1 after having played ME2 for a bit, I had completely forgotten about the snipers. Ouch. Luckily, I played an Infiltrator, so it was a bit of an "Enemy at the Gates" moment on who could snipe who first.
