I concur with the OP. The reason most people used it because they could not win auctions with a legit number of tokens  I personally held off using the exploit until Bioware commented on the thread, it was not locked, and after a day or two it seemed BioWare did not mind.

Should we be stripped of the tokens, yes but not all. Many of us still bought and registered games legitimately. Many of us clicked legitimately, but those gained via the exploit should be stripped.

IF this was in the orignal and clearly stated the original rules then yes, we should stripped of all, but the legal speak was not clear, allowing for major loop holes and gray areas. Hell I felt that the exploit helped clean up the forums as it removed the spamming of clickable urls, and mostly kept the image in a signature.


Am I not whining about the lose of the tokens, god no, easy come easy go. But I feel that the legal/terms should have been MUCH clearer and bioware should have responded the exploit in a more timely manner. Or atleast have said, we are discussing the problem please work the assumption that is against the rules.

Again I am not whining the lost tokens, hell it will help even the field against people who have scored thousands upon thousands. I simply feel that this should have been dealt with much quicker.

*sigh* this was an exploit in a flawed system, to me that's cheating. I could hack in to a bank and make myself rich, but that's illigal(Althought everyone here seems to dissagree). People think what they did was harmless, but you fail to realize that those of us who didn't do it suffer, and if they let you get away with it well cheaters win and those who followed the rules lose.

eh, they're just p*ssed because it's defeating the purpose of their spam campaign, no clicks equals no advertisement, and even if they put a stop to it here, they're not going to be able to stop it being done in forums and such all over the web, so people are going to keep doing it elsewhere no matter what, and if the "honest" people stop when the rest won't, you might as well give up now.

Everyone has the tools to use bbcode on a forum.

You're right that there might be other significant exploits out there - but this individual problem should now be solved everywhere with the mid-transition redirect they've added.

This whole thing makes me sick, why didn't they just do a raffle, or get a large number of small items and hand 'em out to as many people as they could. People are asking to reset the tokens, i dont know how i feel about that(on the one hand it would even everyone out, on the other we all have to start over from scratch.) maybe they should just reset everyones referal tokens to 3000 and stop the ability to accumulate any more.

Mid-transition redirect? I'm not really sure what you're referring to, maybe because I haven't really been following this. Maybe someone can fill me in.

 Click someones link, it will take you to a white page that says "redirecting" then to the actual page. The img tags only look at the first page (redirect).

Mid-transition redirect? I'm not really sure what you're referring to, maybe because I haven't really been following this. Maybe someone can fill me in.

They added a re-direct page to the links to stop the IMG-Tag trick from working.

Truthfully I have never played any other BioWare games other than ME1 and ME2, so I never visit the forums for DA:O. And when this unique url thing started, I made a point to not post anything concerning the contest in anything other than the off-topic section at this website, or at various forums at gamespot.com (where I still participated in the discussions). So no, I do believe that you have me confused with someone else. If you have a link to where I did this, please do present it and I would be more than happy to own it, but as far as I can remember, I did not post the "Mass Effect prank" at the DA:O forums. 


edit: Actually I only started talking on this website when this contest started. So I actually haven't visited any other forum section except for off-topic. Yes, I am saying that I haven't even visited the Mass Effect part of the forums.

Perhaps a penalty applied..if proven you used the image links...but not all tokens removed?   Wouldn't that be fairer, that way the problem is addressed, those that did it..are penalized somewhat, but not totally out of the game.

Honestly most of us haven't been doing things like that, if you look back through the forums, the people who were using the [img] trick were generally being constructive with their posting habits. Many of us thought it was a way to compete with using spam. I can't speak for everyone of course, but I didn't see much, if anything in the way of spam coming from people using the trick.

I'm not saying we're completely innocent, just that we didn't think there was an issue with it given the lack of a response from BioWare, and that the closest thing to an 'offical' response we had was "I personally don't like it, but I'm not doing to do anything about it as long as you're not spamming." Which again is why I don't have a problem with BioWare saying the method is cheating, I just want a compromise instead of the banhammer.

Regardless of the validity of the method, BioWare did a poor job of communicating their position on the issue, and while they don't owe us anything, and they're within their rights to do as they please with the contest, it doesn't seem altogether fair to make this a complete DQ given the circumstances.

Honestly, I propose bonus tokens for those who didn't cheat to bring them back into the game. No one loses anything, everyone who didn't cheat gets free tokens, everyone is happy, and it will rain cute puppies and kittens, and there will be sunshine and rainbows, and so forth.

Don't know how feasible that is, they'd have to work out how many those of us who used the trick gained from it and so forth, and it may be impossible to pin down a good average if those numbers vary widely in range. Still it'd be cool if it could work.
