I tried the update thing an sadly got an error. Tried the other tricks and no cigar either.

Should have known this would happen. Bought Mass Effect for PC on launch day too and wouldn't work right out the box. Spent 7 months with EA tech support trying to figure it out before they just gave up and so did I.....weak sauce BioWare....

Fool me once...shame on you....fool me twice...and I am a dumb ass...never again.

Fix worked for me, Folks this is not a bioware issue its a microsoft issue. YOu need to update your C++ runtime files.

Most folks who are having this issue have either turned off thier Autoupdate feature or have a pirated copy of XP and cant update... =P

I have neither of those and am a developer so I make sure I have the latest version of those runtime files...that's why they are already installed...but I tried again anyways.

Cant blame Microsoft for everything. In my books (and the software engineering world) it's the application developer's responsibility to ensure that their product works on all platforms they claim to support in all testable cases. And when that product is a patch that is supposed to fix crap it had better damn work.

Can you tell us what the error is and maybe we can help you?

I have the same problem. The game simply will not start . The play button is inoperative. Alll the other buttons on the start menu work, but the game is not playing. I downloaded the patch , as well as the Fury of Shale content, and...nada.

Have you tried the steps listed in the Original Post of this thread?

@ Astropcr, the majority of problems with this game, thus far, are hardware related (bad drivers) or software (Microsoft updates). Yes, there are bugs with things... but a lot of it is end-user focused. Perhaps you could tell us about your hardware specs and let us try to diagnose the problem. Also, in today's age of myriad configurations it's impossible (NOT exaggerating, 100% will never happen) to have a game be released where it will work straight from the box for every user (the exception might be some form of homebrew game that sells 20 copies, but I don't even believe that could work 100% of the time for 100% of them either). To have a game which has sold perhaps 500,000 copies or more on three platforms work perfectly for every PC out there? Insane, there is a different configuration for every copy sold... even systems that started out with the same hardware specs are different by the time a game is installed on them (different updating habits, etc.) The fact that most of the people get to play the game whether they need a fix first or not is a small miracle given the incredible mass that makes up a game.

Mine started working after dialing back the sound from the dxdiag page

Could you elaborate Buzz? What kind of sound card do you have? On-board? What driver version?

Got Vista, and no joy. After wasting many hours attempting to get it running, I was forced to concede defeat. All because I wanted to be able to see what color eyes my character actually has.

Honestly, I'm not going to bother with it any more, since the patch wouldn't really affect me, anyway, but in the intests of getting a patch that will work for more people, I'll post what I can find.

Dell XPS M1530, purchased 05/08
Vista SP1 32 bit, just updated manually
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T750 2.20 GHz
3.00 GB RAM
Video card: NVidia GeForce 8600M GT

(Edit: it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to hear this is actually a Vista issue, if that is, in fact, the case. Vista seems to have been one of the more temperamental OS...)

How much video RAM do you have on that 8600? Also, there've been some issues with 8600 GTs and the drivers currently available... The beta drivers have helped some and rolling back to 190.x drivers have helped others... can you describe your problem in a bit more detail please? Error messages? Also, did you try the Microsoft Update? You need to pick "custom" and install all the available updates from every section...

512MB, video memory, I think.

Following the OP's advice, I did the custom Microsoft Update, selecting every option.

The symptoms matched the OP's. Patch installs. Upon launching from the shortcut, I'm unable to select "Play." When I attempt to start it from the directory, using the EXE, I get a mismatch error message.

I'm chalking it up to a peculiarity of my system/gremlins. While I certainly appreciate the efforts you and others have invested in getting it to run, I'm not going to try again. Seven hours is long enough.

did you also run the VC++ 2005 ATL SP1 update? http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en pick the file labeled "vcredist_x86.exe" and when the pop-up arrives tell it to "run" should take just a minute and re-enables the "play" button

Anyone else thinks this patch is kinda suspicious? No official announcement or support for this patch? No stickied post? No immediate hotfix or patch update for something so obviously gamebreaking?

Also wondered why there's no update utility or option in the autolauncher or in-game so we don't have to visit a mirrosite to get the patch. The whole nature of this patch, it's dubious origin, how broken it is . . . something just doesn't feel right here...

P.S Bioware still hasn't responded to my question that i sent 2 days ago regarding this problem...

The patch is officially available... from under your profile under "my games" there's a patches tab... the problem is not with the patch itself but with peoples' Windows installations. What mirror are you talking about? The patch listed right here pulls from a "files.bioware.com" download
