I installed the 1.01a patch though after I had installed the new runtimes and got it working, but that's it for me for awhile. I have registered my DLC's but I won't be downloading them until all these issues are fully fixed.

I just installed Patch 1.01b and the game crashes to the desktop when starting. I am running XP SP3.
Any ideas?
Edit: There appears to be a problem with the installer installing the Visual C runtime libraries. It is not capturing the completion of the installer correctly, it appears. The microsoft installer appears to be doing something in the background before it finishes completely.
Same problem.
It crashes to desktop about 2 seconds into loading a saved game both before the new patch and after. Prior to today I had not installed the new patch. I was playing just fine last night. I have done nothing to change my computer in anyway since last night.
I too noticed that there was a file in the patch file that did not want to install correctly.

I very much regret having wasted my money on the Dragon Age so-called "Collector's Edition" - a collection of bugs and problems. Shan't even be installing the game again until EA and Bioware do their homework and release a patch that actually works. I buy games in order to relax and have fun, not to spend hours downloading this, that and the other and trying (I am 63 years old and don't know very much about computers) to tweak here, there and everywhere.
I'm a long-time fan of Bioware's RPGs and am very disappointed at what they are doing to their paying customers with Dragon Age. Well done to the members of the forum for helping to rescue what can be rescued but I'm done with Dragon Age until serious work is put into making it playable straight out of the box.

Why are people still installing it......you know it doesn't work, or fix anything at all.
Leave the game untill well after xmas go play something else......keep taking a look at the forums to see if they have fixed it.

It seems it plays fine until you run out of memory because it won't wipe it and reload more data from the hard disk. I was hoping patch1.01b would adress something as important as leaking memory. I set my core i7s 940 2.93 GHZ CPU affinity to use threads 4,5,6,7 as stated to fix leak and it helped but still dropped out later.
Frankly I am wary with so many complaining of a bad patch with 1.01b, should I install. Maybe not.

I have loaded 1.01b, have no problems, and play the game 5+ hours at a time with no difficulty.
There was one time when my character started using his bow like a sword (complete with lightning-effects from the sword's rune stone), but that was solved by the next screen change. I understand that's an effect of the DLC.

Thank you for the reassurance. I may give it a try. I also my load the new ATI catalyst 9.11 drivers. I like to keep things updated as long as they don't break things. IF you don't mind what are your rigs specs?

I have installed 1.01a and it didn't add any problems it seems if your install works with 1.01a it will with 1.01b
Keep in mid 1.01b has the very helpful (for many DAO players) MS Visual C++ Runtime Libraries update included, so if you haven't already had it updated manually or auto update it may be worth a shot. ( actually coincidentally Modern Warfare 2 updates your OS to the newest MS Visual C++ Runtime) It seemed to help fix my DAO after I installed COD MW2 and uninstalled AVG 9.0???
I never had very serious problems it just minimized after a while and had a lock ocassionally, but even that is annoying since no other game does so.

I downloaded the patch 1.01b and I could play the game. BUT, everything was slow. Didn't notive any lag, but the animation took forecer to complete a a single sword sweep tok an absurd amount of time to complete. I installed vcredlist_x86, but it didn't worked. I re-installed the game and I still have the same problem. Can someone tell me what is going on with my game??

Unpatched - frequent crashes
Patched - won't run
Repatched - unbearably slow & frequent crashes
Microsoft launched Vista before it was ready, and it turned out to be the worst OS in Redmond's history! Remember the compatibility issues? I would have gladly waited till next year if that meant EA/BW would release a finished product. As it stands, I'll wait until a REAL patch arrives that actually addresses game-killing errors (crash crash crash) instead of more trivial issues (difficulty & sliders?? C'mon!).
As much as I do realize the extraordinary promise the game holds (for the characters are very well done with great voice casting, the story is interesting, and the ConstructionSet-like utility gives me ideas), I can't recommend the game now; perhaps after the Holiday season when prices also go down

I had this issue with the downloaded deluxe version of the game from ea.com. Both solutions work for me (deleting everything from the .ini file is best...no need to start 2 apps manually each time).
