Bump... sticky please!
Also it would be appreciated if we could hear from Bioware if a patch fix (1.01a) is expected.

The game is asking for that? Or the visual C++ installer?

The C++ installer
Ok, try to uninstall the old version first. Depending on your version of Windows Navigate to the unistall programs section. You'll want to find instances of MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable and delete them ( preferrably only the x86 versions ) . Afterwards try installing the new version again. ( vcredist_x86.exe from the MS website )

Vista 64 here. I installed vcredist_x64.exe and vcredist_x32.exe, not knowing whether it was updating based on my OS or the application using the package. Either way, DA:O now works after the 1.01 patch for me. I have no clue which solved the problem for me, and I can't go back and re-test which one did it.

x86 is the one that is needed, but installing both if you're on a 64bit OS isn't going to hurt anything either

Thanks so much. I hadn't even gotten to play it! I'm a bit of a nerd and updated before making a character. (=

The OP's fix didn't work for me. I now can't play any computer games, or run any programs that have moving graphics.
I did reinstall DAO, and turned off the auto patch, but I still can't play any of my games. Something really did a number on me.

Luralene did you try Microsoft update? checked your graphics drivers?

What I found for those of us that it didn't work for is a corrupted install of the C++ . I unzipped the vcredist_x86.exe that they say to download at the beginning of this post, then I unzip the VCREDI~3.EXE that was inside the first zipped executible so I can get to the MSI file. If you right click on the MSI file you can use the option to repair instead of install. That fixed it for me.

helpful insight Wizard... Luralene's problem sounds like it might be something OS related, What version OS do you have Luralene?

Can you provide some more details? System specs, driver versions. What exactly happens in all your games when you attempt to play? Is there an error message?
