Same problem as "what" Buzz? the play button in the launcher fails? What version OS do you have? We've seen no notations of people with steam having the failed play-button as the steam patch does check-for and install the VC++ update

Sorry about that,

I hit the play button and the game just freezes......well the opening screen pops up where it says Dragon Age. Then another screen tries opening (to go to the game I assume) and it just freezes. My Alienware critical crash thing pops up and wants me to submit to Alienware........I did about ten times yesterday and no response.

I am on XP home

Like I said ealier I did play for a while looged out logged back on and have not been able to play since.

You should have updates installed in July - one of them C++ Runtime Library ATL Security Update. There's the money shot.

I have it listed as installed on five systems here.

To the other poster Vista SP2 was released in late March 2009.

I think the point is, SP2 was installed well before my Dragon Age installation, along with whatever else MS deemed critical enough to have my Vista box automatically install, and this update wasn't part of that.

@ buzz, do you have the configuration program working? try disabling the intro movies from there...

@ Obadiah, SP2 isnt auto installing on machines. It's still an optional update; further I didn't get the VC++ update until after installing Dragon Age, but "before" the patch because I update manually on Wednesdays... it won't install the update if VC++ isn't installed and lots of machines don't have it by default

Go it. SP2 was installed on my Vista x64 box though, probably through an optional selection. Guess it's just as well this DA:O 1.01 patch doesn't auto-install (or easily install from a mouse click a-la NWN).

:P

it was a Visual C++ SP1 security update as part of KB973923 and would be listed as "Important" not "Optional." Important is a classification that covers items such as Windows Security Updates, Windows Live Antivirus updates, and Windows Defender definition updates-- "Important" gets autoinstalled on a properly functioning Windows Update. Unless, of course, the Windows Updater or Installer has become corrupt, is turned off, or lacks internet access.

Visual C++ 2005 Runtime comes installed with Vista since it is needed for the little add on tools such as Movie Maker.

We however are digressing, yes?  Though between the two us are doing an admirable job of keeping the very helpful OP bumped. :D

It worked for me. Thank you very much. If it wasn't for the kindness of strangers, I'd have an unplayable game this evening.

I must say, I'm not very impressed with this game's rollout. The community features crashed when I tried to install, but at least my premium content didn't get eaten, so all things considered, I came out ahead.

It's not that the fan community (necessarily) knows more than BioWare or EA or whoever we're dealing with. They just care more. But hey, at least BioWare gets more profit this way. Enjoy, BioWare! :)

Maybe it was installed and (at least in my case) Vista SP2 rolled it back.

I'm not sure "they" screwed this up.  A majority of the issues that we've been able to resolve here on the User Support forums are end-user concerns.  Like the VC++ issue here.  Once the game is installed, if your computer does automatic updates, it will see that it needs to update the VC++ ATL to SP1.  How long that takes is a matter of the settings on the machine in question. Could be a day or a week or more (if the users are set to "notify but not install updates" particularly)

lol, yeah. I checked and my windows update actually nabbed it:

Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB973923)

Installation date: ‎10/‎27/‎2009 1:07 AM ( that's when I finally was able to install my Windows 7 )

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system with Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package and gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

But as you say, its possible something didn't work out right or auto updates isn't on. etc etc.  My problem was actually the Game's Explorer one.. Took me some time to figure that one out. haha.  ( don't know why I did other than it annoyed me )

@ Chandler, yep and that's the idea... I got this update as part of my weekly updates on Wednesday (pre-patch, I didn't have any trouble with it at all myself) which was post game-install so not everyone will have Visual C++ installed on the machine... Mine had it but I did an OS rebuild about 2 weeks ago and it didn't make it back as part of the rebuild prior to installing DA. I will also mention that I was fully updated with all optional installed components as well. Whether that's just an XP-thing I'm not sure; hard to say really.

Glad we could help. :) Be sure to keep things updated in the future-- those updates do help. If nothing else it gets you closer to the platform that the devs are using to make their games for you.

See now I think you're just messin with me. Visual C++ comes with Vista-- just not the latest version.

To the other posters -- just make sure your Windows Update is working properly. Check it now, and make sure it's up to date-- you'll save yourself a lot of headaches in the future. At the very least, you'll get your platform more in line with what the devs are using to make and test their games. More likely than not, their IT group is performing regular maintenance on their systems.

Cheers

Edit: Yah I see what you're saying a few posts up Jiron. Basically you're saying that if you had a fresh install and hadn't updated yet, you would be missing the patch and wouldn't be able to run DA. I hear ya mate. Which leads us to the Visual C++ Redist on the DAO DVD should have been the latest and doesn't seem to be. In which case, the most intelligent thing I can think of is... /facepalm

lol, I'm the OP ;) I was just arguing your point that the windows auto updater nabs it even on fresh installs :) thanks though.

I have XP as do lots of the people having problems... as a side note, a lot of people were complaining about toolset issues, they should probably try updating the SQL security for SP3. It's the x86 version just like for the Visual C++

Heh, the disc we got was probably burned in February. Between the game delay to do a complete launch and the fact that the PC version was "ready" back in March it would totally explain the discrepancy between the disc and the patch

Course it is a good point *grins* On a related note, I realized just now that I'm a glutton for punishment because I gave up playing time today (and read the toolset wiki instead) so I could be here to bump and do tech support. What was I thinking?
