I don't really like either of the humans, so I kill whoever's redundant. My first (Soldier, Female) runs, that ended up being Ashley. My later (Vanguard, Male) runs, it was Kaidan. I never actually used them anyway (forced myself to get their Ally Achievements replaying the game for the nth time), but redundancy bothers me.



Though the next time I replay ME1, gonna save Ashley with my female. Her Horizon encounter was way more hilarious (only significantly religious character in series calling you A GOD).

Going through those achievements sound like hell if you don't bring those squad mates everywhere with you in the first place. I don't really care for achievements...you get a small boost but it's not needed.

 My male Shepard kept Kaiden alive. He's a Biotic, and was already a part of Shep's crew, older friend, and was defending the nuke. Defending the nuke was my priority, so Kaiden was the one I had to save. I do like Ashley as a character though, never an easy choice for me.

Played as female.  Saved Kaiden.  Have regretted it ever since.

First time playing through I wasn't fully aware someone was going to die... I just had that whole feeling where you know it's too easy and something is about to go terrible wrong. Which turned out to be very accurate. Anyways, I chose to save Kaidan because he was responsible for arming the nuke, which took priority in the mission. Furthermore, I thought Ashley could handle herself since she's a solider, but it turns out there's not much you can do against a nuke. So I kept Kaidan alive only to find out in Mass Effect 2 that he's a whiny little boy. So I'm starting to regret my decision. However I really didn't appreciate Ashley's attitude or xenophobia either. Guess that's why I choose to always have turians and krogans on my team.

Kaiden is dead in almost every one of my games. I personally had no use for Kaiden and hardly ever took him along on any missions. I just didn't have any interest in the character at all and very rarely spoke to him.

As I said in another very recent post, I've gotten all ME1 achievements but Ashley's and I have no desire to bother. Kaiden is the lesser of two evils, as he has biotic powers. Emotional freight train yes, but I just shrug it off because that's Kaiden for ya. edit: Might I add, I only romanced him the first time. After that I avoided him like the plague because he clings to Shepard unless you get Liara on board, who likewise clings and you have to tell them both to back the hell off to get them off you.

When FemShep and Ashley meet in ME2, they have a sort of "We're not BFFs anymore" breakup.

I only played ME1 once, and I chose to save Ashley over Kaiden. Kaiden just wasn't that interesting of a character in my opinion.

Ashley on the other hand, while she and I may see our alien allies differently, I still liked her, so I decided to pursue a relationship with her. Than ME2 came and allowed me to be with Tali so I decided, screw you Ash, I'm going with the Quarian.

Either way, Kaiden's body parts are floating around in space somewhere...

Kaidan has more technical knowledge so it makes sense to put him on the bomb, not to mention Ashley is far more suited towards leading a combat-heavy distraction team.

The mission of-course is to destroy the base and once the geth attack the nuke there is no reason not to go back and defend it. Even with the bomb armed it is concievable that the geth could overrun the defenders (all two of them) and deactivate or destroy it. So, Kaidan winds up surviving and Ashley dies. She was my Shepard's love interest too. ;_;

On roleplaying terms I think it actually makes more sense to leave Kaiden with the bomb and save Ashley and the Salarian STG team. The bomb was specifically mentioned to be robust, so the odds that the Geth could have disarmed it were low. Besides, the only way it makes sense to have any of the STG team alive is if you rescued the person you sent with them.

Played through four times (all female)...kept Ashley alive twice, and Kaidan alive twice (once only b/c he was my love interest). Imported two ME1 save files into ME2...and they were both with Ash surviving.

I had a male shep, a special dislike for Ashley and one unexploded nuke...what was I supposed to do?

On my first playthrough, my Paragon FemShep Saved Ashley. Made sense because I'd romanced Liara and I needed Ashley on my team.

On my second playthrough, my Renegade FemShep saved Kaidan. Ashley was also a part of my team for that Shepard, but I was able to replace her with Wrex (though that meant I had to keep him alive).

On my third playthrough, my Neutral MShep sacrificed Kaidan specifically because Ashley was his LI.

I've go one more MShep that I'll get around to finishing. He'll be sacrificing Ashley, mainly because she'll shoot Wrex while he's trying to talk her down.

Ashley. Sent her with the Salarians, so when she was pinned on the tower with the Salarian's it made sense to get her and the Salarian's, because Kaidan was by himself. (Thats a lot of Salarian's in one sentence)

It was a numbers decision. Save the many at the expense of the one.
