I only saved Kaidan on one playthrough, because it was a female Shepard that had him as a romantic interest, all 4 of my other playthroughs I happily killed him. I couldn't stand that whiny Holden Caulfield wannabe. Ashley may have been a xenophobe, but she never acted like some emo kid; besides, Kaiden complained so much because he was living in pain, I cured his (and everyone else's) suffering.
I don't really get why people think Kaidan was a complainer or whiner. I thought he was the opposite. He was happy to open up to you IF YOU ASKED but jeez, Wrex whined more than Kaidan did "oh wahhh, the genophage blah blah." If anything I felt like I had to prod Kaidan to get him to speak his mind about anything.

I think it says a lot about the emotional impact of the first game that people are *still* making "who did you leave behind on Virmire" threads three years later. Being forced to choose, with no easy out like ME2, makes the decision a lot more poignant, and memorable. I am a little sad and bitter, still, that I had to choose between my favorite female character or my love interest, but they did a good job at pulling at our heartstrings, I'll give them that.

Had to be careful not to crush Tali's hopes and dreams of Shepard being interested in her. [smilie]http://img2.pict.com/88/b6/36/3288790/0/tali.gif[/smilie]
(As for Liara, I didn't even know where she was on the ship for my canon playthrough, so I didn't really need to worry about her)

...I guess she's also a soldier, so...that's nice?
Cons; everything else.
The choice is generally clear. At least Kaidan has a wang.

Maybe it's because I romanced him, but I don't remember Kaidan ever directly talking to Shepard about his headaches, only Chakwas mentioning them if you asked her about him. If he did say something, it must have been very brief, because I've played enough times that I have his dialogue practically memorized. He is the least "whiny" member of the crew, and only tells you about himself when relating his story to the current mission. He's also the only crew member who tells you he's worried about you. If that's what someone thinks is annoying or whiny, they probably don't understand friendship or social skills.

By bad-ass I mean in the cinematics... technically everyone's a bad-ass in game, even Miranda in her pleather skin-tight suit and stileto heals, since they're all willing to kill and die for their cause. I guess Thane's intro is was makes me think of him as being more of a bad-ass, what with the whole snapping someones neck then quickly shooting two others without thinking about it, then suddenly going into prayer mode. Admittedly I'm prone to over-exageration, so you have to take my critique of Kaiden with a grain of salt. Maybe it was just his voice that made him sound whiney or something? Been a while since I played ME1, I just remember thinking of him as being whiney when I played itRyrineaNara wrote...

I would just use "xenophobia", but that's just me. I have heard the term "speciesist" in arguements supporting vegetarianism, but never about aliens..... but that's probably because aliens aren't a common topic of discussion.Schroing wrote...

I don't understand where the "whiny" thing comes from, nor do I understand the "Ashley is racist" thing. There are so many nuances to both characters that require the player to think carefully rather than making a sweeping generalization.
Kaidan will mention his migraines with mShep only. He makes it a point to say that he'll make sure that it doesn't effect his duties. Does it? No. If you've ever had the pleasure of having a migraine, then you'll maybe gain an understanding of how little he actually whines. If you haven't, imagine the worst hangover you've ever had. Now imagine living your life where you have that hangover for 3-4 times a week.
Here's my analysis of why I save Kaidan on every playthrough:
-He's an officer; Ashley is not (Kaidan is one rank below Shepard in fact)
-He's a stable L2, as powerful as an asari and an extremely rare specialist
-He has medical training as well as training in electronics and decryption
In short, he's of more value to the Alliance than Ash. Clinical, yes, but that's how it is. Shepard can't put personal feelings in the way of the mission. (I want to note that Ash is my 2nd favorite character in ME1 and Virmire makes me super sadface whenever I play it)

Male Shep, kept Kaidan alive.
I have no animosity towards Ashley, but I felt that because she was
a) Lesser rank than KaidanNot a biotic like Kaidan
c) Believed in God and heaven
d) wanted to redeem her family name
Ashley was the better choice for me personally.
Holy ****.. I had the same reasons (except d).
I romanced Kaidan on both my playthroughs, so that was of course another reason to keeping him alive, but everything Collider said above I thought of too, and helped me not feel guilty about leaving Ash. I really got the sense of how hard it was for her to handle her family's bad reputation and giving her the chance to reclaim her family honour felt like the right thing to do.
