I keep Kaidan alive in all of my playthroughs. He's my favorite character.

I don't understand where the "whiny" thing comes from, nor do I understand the "Ashley is racist" thing. There are so many nuances to both characters that require the player to think carefully rather than making a sweeping generalization.

Kaidan will mention his migraines with mShep only. He makes it a point to say that he'll make sure that it doesn't effect his duties. Does it? No. If you've ever had the pleasure of having a migraine, then you'll maybe gain an understanding of how little he actually whines. If you haven't, imagine the worst hangover you've ever had. Now imagine living your life where you have that hangover for 3-4 times a week.

Here's my analysis of why I save Kaidan on every playthrough:
-He's an officer; Ashley is not (Kaidan is one rank below Shepard in fact)
-He's a stable L2, as powerful as an asari and an extremely rare specialist
-He has medical training as well as training in electronics and decryption

In short, he's of more value to the Alliance than Ash. Clinical, yes, but that's how it is. Shepard can't put personal feelings in the way of the mission. (I want to note that Ash is my 2nd favorite character in ME1 and Virmire makes me super sadface whenever I play it)

Good explanation of Kaiden's abilities. It has been a while since I played ME1 and reading this along with other responses makes me want to play through it again, especially the romance path.

On another note, after playing ME2 with female Shepard on default background, I realized Kaiden was the only character from ME2 I'd could wait for till Mass Effect 3. For some reason, I can understand him being angry (being a guy), and figured things would work out later. That, and because all the female romance's suck. Seriously, the female romances feel so bad. Thane is always moping, over-explaining, and dying, and Jacob almost sounds like a rapist with his cheesy dialogue. Which left me with bird man Garrus, who I consider more of a partner in crime then romance material. I only romanced him because I thought he needed the love after the **** he's been through, and because he was the only one I could trust. It was even worse when the entire romance seems like a "one-night-bizarre" fling, then an actual romance. A part of me wishes to go back, and not romance him, and just pretend it never happened. Too bad Tali or Jack weren't lesbians, because I'd take them over those guys any day (Yes, I don't think Tali's character could ever be a lesbian, but I'm COMMANDER SHEPARD! Can't you make an exception for me?!? (cries, and vows never to play female Shepard again)).

Anyways, what I'm saying is, he's the only female romance that actually seems like a 3 game romance. Which makes me regret killing him off in my cannon female shepard playthrough.

I only saved Kaidan on one playthrough, because it was a female Shepard that had him as a romantic interest, all 4 of my other playthroughs I happily killed him. I couldn't stand that whiny Holden Caulfield wannabe. Ashley may have been a xenophobe, but she never acted like some emo kid; besides, Kaiden complained so much because he was living in pain, I cured his (and everyone else's) suffering.

I don't really get why people think Kaidan was a complainer or whiner.  I thought he was the opposite.  He was happy to open up to you IF YOU ASKED but jeez, Wrex whined more than Kaidan did "oh wahhh, the genophage blah blah."  If anything I felt like I had to prod Kaidan to get him to speak his mind about anything.

Maybe it's because I romanced him, but I don't remember Kaidan ever directly talking to Shepard about his headaches, only Chakwas mentioning them if you asked her about him.  If he did say something, it must have been very brief, because I've played enough times that I have his dialogue practically memorized.  He is the least "whiny" member of the crew, and only tells you about himself when relating his story to the current mission.  He's also the only crew member who tells you he's worried about you.  If that's what someone thinks is annoying or whiny, they probably don't understand friendship or social skills.

Silly girl, if any man has emotion or doesn't like bathing in blood every night then he is a whiner! Gosh!

Pffft, please, don't be insulting.... a man has to have no emotion, bathe in blood AND scream "Blood for the Blood God!" constantly, otherwise he is a whiner...... Blood for the Blood God!!!

To answer the Op's question about dialogue, outside of romancing Ash or Kaidan, I don't think there is unique dialogue, but I haven't come across anything different yet . . .

I let Kaidan die both times, except on later play throughs I made sure Ash went with the Salarians so when I went to rescue her in the tower I'd also be rescuing Kirrahe!

I kept him alive. For all the strategic reasons that have already been listed, plus I usually have him at the nuke which must go off at all costs.

I don't get the complaints of whiny-ness. Frankly, I managed to convince everyone I know IRL to spare him, too. And the men of my acquaintance aren't easily swayed if they hate the character.

I always save Kaidan, for reasons pointed out by both Fortunesque and Collider. I like Ashley, being a strong female I always se her as a great friend to my female Shepard. I always do Virmire last because of that and hate it every time.

Romance wise, besides them telling you there feelings, and an extra dialogue scene, they are the same. However, Kaiden is a completely different character if you're female then if you're male. If you're male, he's very cold and calm, and doesn't talk much. However, if you're female, he's like a shy school boy, who starts turning into a chatter box. If he was more talkative with my Male Shepard, he might not have died in all 4 playthroughs.

A classic case of them wanting to avoid all hints of "gayness". There's an occasional dialogue, "there aren't regs against being friends with your CO," and "Just remember, Lieutenant, I saw her first," that has some friendly banter, but the mShep/Kaidan relationship was much more underdeveloped than fShep/Ash.

Yeah, with Ash, she's the same character, just without a romance. With Kaiden, he's just horribly bland if you're male. I wish they re-wrote his character so Shepard and him seem like buddies, but no, they seem like strangers that have been working with each other for years. They corrected this with Jacob, who seems like a guy you can trust, and someone Shepard would be friends with. With Kaiden, it just feels odd that he doesn't really want to talk with you at all. Heck, you can almost argue that they arent even friends.

They haven't  been working with each other for years though... they just met and Eden Prime was their first mission together.

I support friendship with characters you don't or can't romance in ME3. Of course, the romance subplot takes precedence, but I'd also like to be friends with my crew too.

Oh they haven't? I thought they at least been working with each other for at least a while before Edan Prime. Guess I missed that, or just assumed, because what else could I do? He doesn't talk. lol

I never kill Kaidan, but I always save Ashley. You have to make a choice. Ash is my LI and she always will be. So I save her. Kaidan is great. My Shep's buddy. Would have been nice to keep them both. I think they could make good friends for my Shep and each other. Virmire just sucks.Me2's suicide mission has nothing on Virmire. I support Kaidan and his crew. Virmire survivors unite.

Oh... Well, I guess that just makes him more disposable as "dude to guard the bomb" for male shepard. No hard feelings Kaiden but, I don't know you, and Ash seems more important then you :) (and has a nice ass... though that'll be beat my Maranda 2 years later.)

Actually, Tali might be receptive to that idea, (though it obviously doesn't happen in game)  since she says she'd be willing to to "link suits" with FemShep, using the same shy, hesitant lines as with MaleShep leading up to the romance stuff. And linking suits is a pretty darn intimate thing to do in Quarian culture.

All of my FemSheps see Tali as a little sister though.

I played as a MaleShep, and I ditched Ashley. I know a lot of people object to her being called racist, I kinda figured she was someone who hold racist views based on understandable circumstances. Like the black people in America who want their own nation without white people. I totally disagree with their views of white people, but when you have grown up where they have, you can understand and sympathise with how they reach those views.

So from that, I figured that it would be better for her to die there, and for her name to go down as a good soldier willing to die for the greater good, then to live on and for her views to be exposed and possibly tar her reputation further

A few things:
a) Any character can be bisexual, gay or straight.
B) If Tali were bisexual, there would no point in having her heterosexual romance only.
c) Linking suits is not necessarily sexual. It's a sign of trust.
d) People can be awkward without it being sexual. That's obvious.
e) If you treat Tali right, Shepard is among the only friends she's had that we know of. Friends =/= lovers.

People have seen Kaidan as bisexual, Jacob as bisexual, pretty much every straight character. Ultimately what is important is what gender they are open to in game, because that's what is canon.

Liara has a better ass and personality, and you've known Kaidan for longer than you have Ashley. Not to mention he's just got more skills in general than just pointing a gun and shooting, something you've got plenty of already.

Kaidan is infinitely cooler than Ashley.
