I keep Kaidan alive in all of my playthroughs. He's my favorite character.
I don't understand where the "whiny" thing comes from, nor do I understand the "Ashley is racist" thing. There are so many nuances to both characters that require the player to think carefully rather than making a sweeping generalization.
Kaidan will mention his migraines with mShep only. He makes it a point to say that he'll make sure that it doesn't effect his duties. Does it? No. If you've ever had the pleasure of having a migraine, then you'll maybe gain an understanding of how little he actually whines. If you haven't, imagine the worst hangover you've ever had. Now imagine living your life where you have that hangover for 3-4 times a week.
Here's my analysis of why I save Kaidan on every playthrough:
-He's an officer; Ashley is not (Kaidan is one rank below Shepard in fact)
-He's a stable L2, as powerful as an asari and an extremely rare specialist
-He has medical training as well as training in electronics and decryption
In short, he's of more value to the Alliance than Ash. Clinical, yes, but that's how it is. Shepard can't put personal feelings in the way of the mission. (I want to note that Ash is my 2nd favorite character in ME1 and Virmire makes me super sadface whenever I play it)
Good explanation of Kaiden's abilities. It has been a while since I played ME1 and reading this along with other responses makes me want to play through it again, especially the romance path.
