Not being able to transfer SOME DLC gear during character transfer also is a major bummer. I liked my Warden Commander's set. It was not fun to have it disappear when I started Awakenings. Games should be fun. This should be fixed.

Technically speaking, that's not a bug. They've said for several months some of the DlC gear won't transfer. It's in the FAQ file. Bugs are problems in software that are unintentional to the developer and discovered by the player inadvertently. Because it was preannounced, that makes it a feature, not a bug. (OK, I jest a bit.) :wizard:

A bug is when the game does something other than when it's supposed to. They told you your gear wouldn't transfer. They knew it was going to happen and if you bothered to read you would have known it would happen. Therefore, not a bug.

Now should they have done the work modders have already done to make the items transferable? Such was obviously doable because it's been done; in fact done, even before the Awakening Toolset update! Perhaps, but that would not be bug-fixing ... per se.

BTW, as I've pointed out a few times, there are several item properties that don't actually do anything. "+ to healing effects" is one. There are others. AFAICT, Awakenings has yet to "awaken" any item properties that were "dormant" in Origins.

+Healing Received works exactly as intended.  Trust me, I've waded through that code.

The problem is characters and companions are initialized with the wrong base healing effect factor (1 instead of 100).  When determining the total healing effect factor during the application of a heal, it gets rounded up to 100 (the minimum healing effect factor permissible) if it's less than 100.  Since it's doubtful you've stacked +100 Healing Received or more on a character, you will never see the impact of +Healing Received (and then of course if you did, it'd be much less than expected!).

As for pickpocketing making gold—the stealing bug does not impact theft of coin proper in the slightest.  Nor does it effect plot items or guaranteed (preplaced) items.  It only effects random mundane items (which granted, from higher-level marks will tend to be of better quality and perhaps can net you some coin).  It's not vital to making money in the game (running a potent lyrium potion operation, especially as a dwarf noble, is still probably the best source of revenue in the game if that's important to you).

With respect to DLC transferring to Awakening, this is something that Bioware could and should have easily addressed.  There's a fix out there that solves the problem by just copying the relevant files to a different position in DA's override/module search hierarchy.  Another problem exists where Awakening reused content IDs that had been given to Warden's Keep, causing textures from WK to override textures in Awakening.  Easily worked around by hiding/moving the WK textures somewhere else in the hierarchy, but something that Bioware could have avoided by having better communication between their disparate dev teams.

The whole "DLC not intended to transfer to Awakening" is an excuse (and as some would say, a crock).  Bioware will fix this and be hailed heroes, I'm sure, but they could've delivered it working if they had tried. :innocent:

How difficult would it be to fix healing initialization? I'm guessing hard or they wouldn't have done that round-up business. And does Magic come in after the rounding-up?

How exactly does it look this way? Perhaps there are *gasp* 2 dedicated teams. One doing DLC, one doing patch work. And just because there aren't fixes out doesn't mean they're not working on them...

Well, I´m not going to repeat what I said earlier maybe you should read the thread again. I didn't say they are not working on a bugfix and I did point out that there is (obviously) more than one team, it's all about priorities and what makes money (DLCs/expansions) and what not (patches). Maybe I wasn't clear though, english is not my first language

I guess my point is, unless we are actually working at Bioware, we have no idea if they are, as you stated, "completely forgetting that there are still (serious) bugs to fix". Right now, there could be some poor soul cranking out some bug fix, hoping he can get it done soon so he can enjoy his Friday night

And you're english is quite fine.

CybAnt1 and Nukenin - intersting posts.

I still say "copout" on non transferable Wardens Keep DLC especially while Return to Ostagar and Helm of Honleath do transfer. I also still think that pick pocketing should work correctly.

But being a reasonable person, I acknowledge I did not read FAQ file. Also, based on the amount of extra gold I had at the end of my last play through DA:O I could "get 'buy'" without pickpocketing everyone.

Get it? Get "buy"? I crack myself up.

Ah - now I read that they took pickpocketing away on purpose.

Ok - so it's not a bug . . . it's just a bad idea. Next they should introduce a patch that makes all chests contain no treasure.

Sigh . . . guess I can't rant anymore as my two biggest complaints were noted in the patch notes.

The "round-up business" is done by the code that handles creature properties.  In the properties 2DA file the healing effect factor is defined with a minimum permissible value of 100.  Whenever the total healing effect factor (base plus modified) is queried, if it is less than 100, the minimum value of 100 will be returned.

The initialization of the healing effect factor can be fixed by changing two lines:

(for creatures) In sys_autoscale_h, function AS_SetCommonStats, line 391:
    SetCreatureProperty(oCreature, 51, 1.0);
should be changed to
    SetCreatureProperty(oCreature, 51, 100.0);

and (for characters) in sys_chargen_h, function Chargen_InitializeCharacter, line 521:
    SetCreatureProperty(oChar,51,       1.0f);
should be changed to
    SetCreatureProperty(oChar,51,       100.0f);

These are the two "creation" points I'm aware of where the property gets initialized; there may be more.

My fix doesn't incorporate that, because I'm reluctant to recompile the script files that reference these script headers (and fixing those would only work with new games; even Bioware will probably need to insert a correction check in the effects_heal_h or elsewhere that will "repair" the base healing effect factor for a character/creature if it is still found to be one, to make it work with games in progress/old saved games).

So I'll leave it to Bioware to fix this properly.  My fix is a simple hack that works so long as nothing else is trying to trap EVENT_TYPE_EQUIP.  The second Bioware fixes this properly, my fix is no longer necessary and can go away. ^_^

As to whether "Magic comes in after the rounding up", I'm not sure what that means.  Magic doesn't have anything to do with healing received, aside from active Blood Magic reducing it (which occurs after the amount to heal has been modified by the healing effect factor).

And now that everyone's been put to sleep… -_-

Holy crawdads, you're right!  I bought some more RAM and all my problems with the game went away!  Stealing bug, gone!  Dog finding minor items bug, gone!  +Healing Received bug, gone!  All DLC transfers fine to Awakening, with zero conflicts!

What's weird is I didn't even have to install the RAM.  Just the mere buying of it, as you suggested, did the trick! :wizard:

</sarcasm> :pinched:

Bugs do exist.  You've either avoided them or been oblivious to them.  That doesn't mean others haven't stumbled across them or otherwise experienced them.

Dragon Age Wikia's description of Patch 1.03.  But you're right - nowhere else does it say that the pickpocketting nerf is a "Patch feature".  So I'm wrong again.

Ah well - in any case, it's dumb.  What's the fun in having a pickpocket skill if you can't pick a lot of pockets.  Like I said, it's like having a bunch of chests in the dungeons with nothing in them.  Or sparkling corpses with no loot.

Also, as you are aware, this is not the only problem with 1.03 and Awakening.  It's just the one bug that is in the player's face the entire time he/she is playing.

But it's nothing a little more RAM can't fix.  I've only got 8.0 GB with a GTS250.  Obviously not enough to handle this video game.

Yes, arent you clever.

Im just saying all of these people complaining seem to be the minority, so maybe looking elsewhere would help you find some answers.

Well, I´m stubborn, I have waited 4 months for a relatively bugfree version - I wait another 4 months if it must be :)
Of course, they lost a loyal customer, that will teach them - or not

Teach them what?

Most people who wait for a "relatively bugfree version" do this by waiting to buy the game.  They may actually save money by doing this.  For these people, the lack of a "collector's edition" or preorder bonus items is of little concern.

Most people that preorder want to play the game now, not later.  Bugs, warts, and all.  If they encounter issues, they know where to unleash their fanrage.  That's a good chunk of the game experience for them right there, unleashing holy hell on the forums.  But at least they tend to have personal experience with the game before venting/raging.

So all this may teach them is that there are some odd people out there.  Except they already know this, with the breed of humanity known as "marketer" polluting their ranks.  So it teaches them nothing.  IMHO.  They've probably gained three new customers in the time it took for you to express your disappointment (conservative, very conservative guesstimate). ^_^

I concur.

Cephei78 -- The game itself is pretty epic though -- bugs and all (IMO).  I myself have never experienced any bugs... can't speak for everyone, of course, but in your case you'll never know one way or another until you at least try to play the game.  You're missing out :\\

I picked up the Collectors edition early last month, and just now had time to load it. I patched to 1.03 prior to starting the game. My question is "What is the problem with the 1.03 Patch? I have no interest in paying more for DLC, given the very poor reviews I've seen on same, and have no pre-patch saves to worry about.

Before I give you a bugs list, let me say I only complain about things that are important to me. This game is important in the sense that it's a great game. So congrats on your purchase.

Bugs in patch 1.03 I know about:

1) Random game crashes on the Windows 7 operating system.

2) The pickpocket function no longer works. You pickpocket folks, the game says "item received", but no items in your inventory. It takes a few pickpockets for this bug to kick in, but by the fifth or sixth person you pickpocketing lint.

3) Some downloadable gear will not transfer over to the expansion. While technically not a bug because they made a note of it in the patch notes, it is a load of hooey.

4) Glitches with companion influence levels. Sometimes they shoot right up to 100, skipping important plot points. Other times gifts do not give the correct amount of influence. This isa bigger problem in the Awakening expansion.

5) The "long load times" that this patch was supposed to fix? Nuh uh. It's better, but not right.

6) In Awakening there is one dungeon where you are "captured" and lose all your gear. As you play on you are supposed to be able to get your gear back. But if your character is too powerful the gear just disappears into the ether.

There are a number of ways to work around these problems. My solution was to uninstall Dragon Age, Reinstall Dragon Age, load patch 1.02a from a satellite site. Then the Origins game works fine.

I still recommend saving your game under a specified title at the start of every zone in case your gear goes missing.

As I understand it patch 1.03 is needed in order for the Awakening Expansion to run correctly. When I get to Awakening again I'm not sure what I'll do. Hopefully they will have fixed the pick pocket by then because honestly that is the one feature that is in the players face every couple of minutes. I found all kinds of potions and made money to buy good gear through pick pocketing.

As far as the DLC content . . . you only read reviews from the folks who are unhappy. Stone Prisoner, Warden's Keep, and Return to Ostagar are all great and I recommend getting them before you start the game. They enrich an already rich game greatly. The cost for the DLC is reasonable considering how much it costs to go to the movies or out to dinner.

Enjoy.

It's entirely possible to play the game without pickpocketing a soul, so I wouldn't say it's "in your face" unless you're trying to play the thief.  At least on the PC you have options; console pickpockets are out of luck until it is fixed officially.

So, you don't have for example the +healing received bug? Or did you mean you don't care if the core mechanic isn't working properly?

I am by no means a supporter of this Bioware title but honestly you don't need half the things in this game to be working to finish it.  It really is that easy of a game on any setting.

Only one set of sidequests (Slim Coudry's) require you to make use of it. And AFAIK they are unaffected (and are sidequests, not mainquests).

Personally, I wouldn't mind it becoming a more useful OPTION for finishing SOME main quests. I.e. do you kill the guy to steal his key, or maybe for once spare his life, and just steal it off him?

I just wish it was as 'useful' ('purposeful') a skill for the game as, say, lockpicking, or coercion.

Be warned many people consider shapeshifting's deficits a feature, not a bug.

(Personally it looks to me like something they made a feature once they couldn't quash a certain scripting bug involving weapon-shifting. But that's me.)

So in any case, if you've got a PC, there's a mod that fixes it, Shapeshifter Plus. (I like this one because most of the other shapeshifting mods really do all kinds of other crazy stuff, WITHOUT fixing its central problem. His does this, and does add one other form, a dragon form.)

no, I play on the 360. it's weird but it seems we got patch 1.03 before 1.02, so all the problems like dexterity, Rally, empty corpses, and low mana regeneration still exist for me

I'm not terribly bothered by it though. I don't like archers and the other issues are pretty minor. but I really wanted to try out shpaeshifting!! argh

Hanz,

Thanks for your input. I am now concerned, but I'll run the game through and see what happens.  Generally I don't use "Pick Pocket" very often in RPG's so I'll suffer through.

As to the major glitch where you loose your equipment, BioWare will probably fix that with the next patch.

As to DLC, I base my decisions on the major reviewers, both online and in Computer Gaming Mag's I trust.  So far all of the sources I normally trust are not impresed with the DLC in general, though some seems to be OK.  I'll just avoid the DLC and eventually pickup AWK.

It will probably take me a while to get through the game, as I'm busy working, racing, and taking care of family problems, so my free time is short.  I've several more games that are just sitting on the shelf.  I'm sure that by the time I get 1/2 way through Dragon Age Origins, there will be one or more patches that may address the problems you outlined.

Nods.  Yeah, we discussed that.  But to me it's like the itch you can't scratch. Really irritating.  And, as I noted before, what's the point of having a skill if you can't use it.

This has to be the most Bologna, rubbish response yet. Go and check the tech support forum instead of using nonsense words like "minority". Let me break it down for you: people with 1.02b patch? Virtually no crashes (tested this myself). People with 1.03 (myself included) crash a hell of a lot.

My guess is that the patch broke the game, when running certain configurations (more than 2 core processors seem to be most affected). However, to say that it is completely bug free and to pluck a word like "minority" out of your backside is laughable. Get me some statistics before you start telling people to upgrade their rigs.
