First off, SW:TOR is amongst my most anticipated games of

But is SW:TOR going to be an MMORPG like for instance WoW or will it become more of a CORPG like Guildwars?

To start of i should explain where im comming from.

I have played WoW off and on since its first release - resently stoped due to guild drama and Mass Effect 2 releasing just as i ran out of time. Though what i will put forth isnt by any means restricted to WoW. I will however use WoW as a point of reference.

I think anyone who has played any MMO, WoW included know the angst or disgust for what is simply refered to as PUGs or Pick Up Groups. Most of the time PUGs would only come into the picture when you are doing a dungeon crawl but it isnt unheard of to PUG a particularly hard quest.

Now remember the quest demo we have been showed. Remember the dynamic dialogue where all players in the party got to participate? I remember my first thoughts when I saw that demo. First I though: Sweet! Thats going to be awesome. A plit seconed later however: Man, there is no chance I would dare to take a random guy that i dont know with me on quests. Upon more reflection Im not even sure i would take a friend unless their happened to play their character in a manner that fits together with mine.

So my concern is that in making the game more storydriven have this made SW:TOR into more of a massive singleplayer experiance or can it still be multiplayer?
Would you risk a random player into your quest group who might just want to stress through the quest and get onto the next one or would you be extremly selective in who you team up with?
Have you (Bioware) thought about this and if so have you come up with a way to counter this?

Just some thoughts.

If I had to take a guess (since we don't have answers on any of these points) it would be:

Your leveling/"Story mode" quests will give all choices to be made by you - even if you're grouped with someone.

Dungeon specific choices (like that "kill the captain?" example) will be made in the more dynamic/group fashion we saw. These choices, however, will be guaranteed not to have consequences outside of that dungeon/adventure chain.

Unlike most MMORPGs SW:TOR looks like it at least has a decent story because most others are just the same old crap over and over again. I do agree that having a multi-party dialogue may cause problems if you didn't know the person but the possibilities that would come with such a feature are awesome.

If it is your flashpoint, it is your choice that will be executed, even if the others chose something else.

However, what they chose will reflect them only and not you. Same for you. What you choose, will only reflect yourself in good or bad karma.

Personaly I'm just not comfortable with having a storydriven situation where the player you are currently grouped with just care about getting through the scene asap. Some people will pick a dialogue choice at random, ie. dont care one way or another. Others will just choose the dialogue that will give them the most "lolz". Either way I would rather not take the chance of either happening. :/

If you have no problem with that issue, you are a braver gamer then I /bow

The RPG nerd in me thinks this multi-party dialogue system is a very bad idea, however, the troll in me thinks this is going to be wonderful!

I mean, I play an RPG for the story. I play an MMO to be better than you. I don't need a background story for why I'm kicking your teeth in, I just want to kick your teeth in. Is that so wrong?

Eh, I have faith that BioWare will make SW:TOR an awesome game. The only thing they can do to ruin it for me, personally, is if they spend almost all of their time working on end game by making more and more raids, and making combat 98% gear, 2% skill, like WoW. (ok, I over-exaggerated, but still, gear-dependency in a MMORPG makes the game, especially PvP, way too dull)

The concern i have isnt really the game itself but rather the meta-game that will suround it.

Also: Any RPG be it PnP or MMO have little to do with skill. Its all stats and gear based. Its just one of those things that are attached to the RPG genre as a whole.

They have said, don't take random pugs into your main story line quests.

Ya, it's true that items always factor into mmorpg combat, but to varying degrees. I remember PvP combat in DAoC requiring more player skill than having better items. Of course that was only in duels or in RvR when there were a small and even number of players fighting each other. Even after TOA when people claimed having artifact gear made it unfair, I was able to beat full-artifact geared players (even thanes and warriors) on my merc who had only 1 artifact (winged helm, if anyone played and remembers, the rest of my armor was from the epic quest, which at that point was considered ultra-crap gear) because I had more skill playing my class than they did with theirs.... but anyway back to the actual topic:

I think I read something along those lines over at mmorpg.com a couple of weeks ago. I'll go check in a little bit. Edit: haven't been able to find anything relating to pugs, guess my brain isn't working right now because of too much studying and not enough caffeine.

My only concern is that I don't make beta.
