I'm going to ask for help but make a confession in the process.

I'm so not a tactics-minded human being, but I'm learning.  I absolutely love Dragon Age and I'm having a great time, but I've made so many errors!  I'm using the Prima guide and trying to make wise decisions but I get myself into fixes that I cant "fix" if that makes sense.

So I made a huge blunder in selecting my party for Paragon of Her Kind.  I have my PC (Warrior), Wynne, the Berserker Dwarf, and... Alistair.  I realize now I should've kept someone with ranged attack on hand too late.  Please don't laugh, but I couldn't bear leaving Alistair behind, I totally love him!

I feel like I'm never going to defeat the broodmother.  With the poor choice of party I've made, do you have any advice other than going back to a saved game and starting the whole mess again?

No reason to laugh, I always bring characters along because of story reasons or personal preference.

Since you have wynn and not morrigan you can use her ranged attacks on the brood mother along with any ranged spells. Also, you can use a bow along with alistair and pick away at her. And you can give a bow to the dwarf as well.

That was actually my party the first time I played through (I never liked leaving Alistair behind either lol). I ended up only controlling Wynne, kept her on the move so as to escape the tentacles and Darkspawn, chugging Lyrium and healing the party up as they whittled away at The Broodmother's health.

yes thats the way just put a bow or crossbow switch tactics to distance and controll the healer i would assume you to melee kill her anyway for a nice finish move ;D

Position your part on the slab of rock, and shoot away.

First, turn the difficulty down to easy (for the duration of the battle). Next, try to position yourself and your allies in the little "islands" so the Broodmother can't hit you with her tentacles. Does Prima cover basics like not positioning your party mates too close to each other so Broodmother's Spit doesn't hit them all?

Do you have someone with Poison-making? If so, use any flasks and bombs you have at her.

Do you have ranged weapons? Check you inventory and see, you might be able to use them. Have Wynne focus on Broodmother and have everyone else focus on defending Wynne from Darkspawn reinforcements. Wynne should only attacking or using Hea/Regeneration - turn off any other spell and disable any unnecessary AI.
When Broodmother focuses her nature damage attacks on someone (probably Wynne) have him/her use a nature salve to raise his/her nature resistance (you should have a few of these, unless you sold them all). Use potions if you can, only use Heal/Regeneration in emergencies or when you're low in potions.

Good luck.

Finally, once you defeat her go and restock/replan/save your party in Orzammar first before proceeding to the Anvil of the Void. I don't like spoiling, but you wouldn't want to jump out of the frying pan only to land in the fire.

Thanks so much for your kind and generous advice! I will follow it as closely as I can. I'm having a hard time finding flasks, who sells them, please?

A flask/bomb is in Dragon Age is basically a grenade. Only characters with poison-making can use them. They are quite powerful. There are 5 types: the Acid Flask, Fire Bomb, Freeze Bomb, Shock Bomb and the Soulrot Bomb. You should have accumulated a few of these in your travels. If you can't use them then just focus on using ranged attacks, avoiding her tentacles, using potions/heal and defending Wynne.

Actually, I went through this part of the quest this morning with that same party (though my PC is a rogue archer). I found it helpful to launch two bombs right as you enter the room - one at the left two tentacles + Broodmother and the second at the right two tentacles + Broodmother. This helped soften them up to take out later.  I think the acid flasks and soulrot bombs were useless.  Use fire and freeze (I think) if you have them.

Basically the key with this group is to keep Wynne alive so she can keep everyone else alive. You might even need to peel off someone to take care of a tentacle or hurlock attacking her sometimes.

you should be ok if you have some pots, kill tentacles first (away from the broodmother) when they go away charge the mother, when tentacles repop go away from the broodmother and kill them

as long as you pay attention and no one die in the first half of the fight (expecially wyn) you should be ok

Ive never really went into melee with the broodmother, moslty let Morrigan use her blizzard or inferno and fireball while dealing with the tentacles and darkspawn till it was near death and charged her

No need to fear the Broodmother with the party you brought. Just don't try to brute force your way into victory, pace yourself and keep a close eye on all your party members. She does two things that are quite dangerous to melee party members: grab and an AoE gas attack.

If she grabs one of your melee folk quickly shield bash or pommel strike the party member out of her clutches. As for the gas attack, if you notice anyone in your party close to the Broodmother standing in a greenish cloud quickly move them out of it's area of effect to avoid needless damage.

Other than that keep an eye out on Wynne in case a tentacle pops up right beside her or several of the darkspawn adds start attacking her, just have one of your warriors attack/taunt the darkspawn off of her and while keeping away from the tentacles since they can only hurt you in melee.

Basically there are a lot of things happening in this encounter and if you don't keep your focus/cool your party can get overwhelmed by all the sources of damage. But if you pace yourself, make judicious use of the pause function, use potions if/when the need arises and pay attention to all your characters you'll see that it's actually a fun, tactical and very doable fight, no matter what party composition you happen to bring with you. Best of luck.

One thing that can help against the Broodmother's poison spit/cloud attacks is Nature Balm (Greater if possible) - the attacks are Nature based so increasing your Nature resistance is key to reducing damage from those attacks. The Survival skill also grants a bonus to Nature and Physical resists, so I recommend that people add a few skill points to that one.

Take out the tentacles as quickly as possible, then focus all attacks on the Broodmother - use all of your heavy hitting attacks/spells (Single target if you are playing above Easy and have to deal with Friendly Fire - AoE otherwise). Wynne should have Glyph of Repulsion - park her on one of the ramps and have her place that glyph at her feet, this will keep the darkspawn summoned by the Broodmother away from her for a short period of time at least.

Best bet is to use the tactics system - Set Wynne to be a 'Healer' with the last tactic being Enemy->Target Of->Controlled Character/Main Character | Attack (Left hand side of the pipe is the menu progression for the tactic, right hand side the action). This will help keep the micromanagement down a little bit.

Set Alistair to Defender and Oghren to Scrapper - both with the last tactic being the same as for Wynne I mentioned above. Focus on taking down the broodmother, the darkspawn summons can be put off until she is dead - just keep your party healed and alive (frequent pausing to re-check the tactical situation is recommended).

My first time I don't remember what my PC was but I pretty sure i had Sten, Ogrehn and Morrigan. And I died a few times before getting through. That was fun.

I never been in quite your situation, but I was wondering.. Does everone die and then Wynne or does Wynne die then everone else?

Broodmother can't use the tentactles if you are on the islands? I did not know that... I slugged it out in meele on nightmare. Your party sounds like a lot better for the job than my latest party of oghren zevran and liliana (who did not have enough stealth to hide in broodmothers presence hence leading to her unfortunate demise along with her song of courage). Anyway I killed the tentacles first then slugged at broodmother until more minions appeared, killed those, then tentacles again before finally finishing her off.

She uses the tentacles, but they do not reach you on the island. Her poison spit will still get you though, as will the darkspawn she calls

I would like to say thank you to everyone for the wonderful tips and advice. I defeated the broodmother with your help, and I'm very appreciative.

Seriously, I thought I wasn't going to make it! Pacing out the attacks and keeping Wynne safe was the ticket. I was just charging in like gangbusters, hence, a lot of dying and frustration.

Thanks again!

If your fighting the brood mothers the inferno spell is the way to go i always carry to mages both spirit healers so that cuts down on the health potions i consume by the beginning of awakening i got anders to be a arcane medic oghren a champion,Berzerker and a spirit warrior and took justice along flawless took 3 minutes to kill awakenings brood mother so keep in mind to have attacks and specialzations for your warriors and mages that support each other thats the key for me in dragon age team work :D
