Again, our theories explaining universal expansion may seem neat and tidy but there are always wrinkles.  dark energy is a relatively new theory to explain why our previous theories about the Big bang didn;t work out (accelerating growth you say?...oh...well then...)

This is the essence of how science works. We find what the currrent theories fail to explain, and try to explain them, and then test the explanations.

And, I have enough faith in the common person's ability to understand the concept of light taking time to travel somewhere, combined with the fact that the universe had a beginning, to explain why we can't see forever.

StarWrecker let me just say I appreciate your imput lots.  Now, a few questions...

Time Dialation: When you have time can you explain how exactly how Dialation works.  For instence at fast speeds time goes much faster.   And is Dialation the same as traveling into the FUTURE!!!

AntiMatter:  So I remember back in physical science (im a HS Senior now)  talking about different charges of ions, protons, nutrons and things like that, I remember faintly some haveing a negitive charge.  You said AntiMatter is matter with a negitive charge, I take it would'nt be the same as a type of thing as back in science.  And quite frankly I don't even think I have the right terminology down.

And yes, for debates like this I hate useing Wikipedia, im just on the lazy side.  And one more thing

Maybe I need more faith in people.  Then again, it isn;t like I was writing a thesis about a finite universe, i was merely conveying a point of interest in a simple and understandable way to laymen on an open internet forum.

I usually find that saying "edge of the universe" when speaking to someone with limited knowledge is easier than going off on a tangent about limited perception and the geometry of an infinite shape. Most people can conceptualize what I mean without thinking I am telling them that there is a spot at the edge of our vision where scientists write "Here there be monsters" and draw a picture of a spaceship falling off of a cliff.

One more thing, BlackHoles I know they form some how because a star colasping in on it's self because the mass is so dense.

Now explain the actually what the dense tearing a hole in, in moddles I see a star tearing a hole in a grid of XYZ Axises. And when a Black hole consumes mass where dose that end up?

Wait a minute, are you a High School Senior or the possessor of a Master's of Science degree? Frankly, based on your knowledge, or lack there of, of the English Language, not to mention the frequent use of non-scholarly sources, I would suspect the former. Still, if my guess is correct, that leaves us with one question - why the **** would you try to pass yourself off as  person with a, quote, "MD is Quantum Psysics" to the rest of the forum? Why would you leave yourself open to attack by posting about a complex subject that you, evidently, have a, at best, loose grasp of? Come on Captain, stop pretending and start telling us the truth.

Hehe, the first time I heard that was in The Big Bang Theory (that show makes me want to become a physicist, darnit). Anyways, irrelevant, so moving on. Oh, wait, I have nothing intellectual to add. I just wanted to say I admire the display and the pondering of life's imponderables.

EDIT: I don't believe he was attempting to come off as someone who possessed a degree of any sort...

Okay, you're exactly right. As you go faster, time goes faster. It is the same as travelling into the future, except of course you can't go back in time. The closer you get to the speed of light the faster time goes for you. From your point of view, all distances will be shorter, and all things will be heavier. They're all related by a number called gamma that approaches infinity as your speed approaches the speed of light.

As for antimatter, it's the opposite charge, not negative. Electrons (what orbits around an atom) have a negative charge, and anti-electrons have a positive charge.

As for black holes... The idea here is that a black hole is created when an object has so much mass there is nothing that can stop it collapsing further, not even the electrical repulsion of its particles or anything like that. Eventually it will get so dense there'll be a sphere around it where light can't escape - this is called the event horizon, and will appear as a black void. It's about 30 kilometres across for a black hole 7 times the mass of the sun.

The mass that goes into one just becomes part of the infinitely small point at the centre - the infinitely small, infintely dense point of matter is called a singularity.

Uh....read qhat you quoted, he never claimed to have any training at all.  You see, in the first quote he uses the term "Us", which in englsih includes the speaker in a group of people.  In this case that group of people is those without expert training in quantum physics.  In the second quote he clarifies what he meant by the initials MD In the third quote he informs us of his education level.

Calling people out on bull**** is all well and good, but you might want to read things over twice before doing so.

It's always best to teach people as close to the truth as you think they can comprehend. I don't think saying "The Universe started 13.7 billion years ago, so we can only see 13.7 billion light years into space because the light has only had 13.7 billion years to travel" is delving very deeply into the geometry of space.

Just want to add a bit to the whole time dilation thing before I go to bed.

A common example used to help explain time dilation is the twin paradox (which I think StarWrecker mentioned before but to be honest I am too lazy to scroll back and find). Here it is in basic terms (snipped from thebigview.com since I am too lazy to type it out):

There are two twin brothers. On their thirtieth birthday, one of the brothers goes on a space journey in a superfast rocket that travels at 99% of the speed of light. The space traveller stays on his journey for precisely one year, whereupon he returns to Earth on his 31st birthday. On Earth, however, seven years have elapsed, so his twin brother is 37 years old at the time of his arrival. This is due to the fact that time is stretched by factor 7 at approx. 99% of the speed of light, which means that in the space traveller’s reference frame, one year is equivalent to seven years on earth. Yet, time appears to have passed normally to both brothers, i.e. both still need five minutes to shave each morning in their respective reference frame.

They also have this nice little graph which shows that the closer to the speed of light you get the more time dilation will effect you.

That's debatable. The wording of the first post could be read one of two ways: Either that he's saying that he has a Master's degree but not everyone is going to have one, or that, again, he knows that not everyone is going to have one but without any claim of ownership. Now I realize that it could be read either way, and I am willing to admit that I misread the post if he clarifies the opening of the first postings, but the opening line was obtuse enough that either one could be a valid reading. Anyways, as I said, he can clear this up with a post - and I'm sure he'll do that if it's all a misunderstanding.

Argh time dilation is really difficult to grasp xD Well, not exactly difficult - at times, I feel like I understand it, then I think on it some more and then I lose it. It's great! Thanks for this nice brain fodder, Sloth of Doom, and sleep well *lol*

No, it was pretty obvious that he wasn't claiming to have a Masters in quantum physics from the wording of his first post.

Sloth's explanation of time dilation is dead on. If any of you are curious, the number gamma I mentioned is Posted Image

As can be seen from his picture, if you're traveling at a certain speed, and a certain amount of time passes for you, the time for people that aren't moving relative to you is gamma times longer than your time.

The same goes for mass. All things will be gamma times heavier at speed, and all distances will be gamma times shorter.

If you don't understand this, it doesn't matter, but basically the bigger gamma is, things get faster in time, shorter in length, and heavier.

Again, I have to disagree. If I were speaking to a crowd as their regent and said something like "not all of us are kings but..." that would convey that I wanted my subjects to do something even though they might not be a king or queen. The opening post is no different and, as I said, could be read in a similar way.

Royalty would not be inferred by that statment, but rather by the big hat with jewels on it that said Royal wore when stating it.

Bingo! Or Yatzee.  Either way the ladder was a joke.  Your quote right there sums it up.  I am not claiming to have one, I'm pretty sure you can't get a MD at the High School level anyway.
