With Fergus we know.. what? That he was sent into the Wilds before it was awash with Darkspawn?

Oh, I definitely went for the lashing out options when they arose. xD Like when you meet up with Cailan and discussing what to do in Lothering with Morrigan and Alistair. Those were the only two instances I know of. Apart from the origin story, of course.zahra wrote...
That would have been so cool. For example y'know where the bartenders tend to have rumors to tell you, they could have been scripted so you could have snippets of Fergus's possible whereabouts, like rumors about survivors or something.
In general I thought that the HN didn't have enough options to demonstrate pissed-offness at the whole situation (disclaimer, DA:O is still AMAZING in my eyes), like your parents were just killed, you are thrown into this whole Warden business without so much as a handbook and all Alistair can do is whine about Duncan (who he knew for 6 months, HELLO PERSPECTIVE MUCH, MY PARENTS WERE JUST BUTCHERED, QUIT CRYING) and of course Morrigan is very very emotionally "supportive". There is no pissed off "outlet"/dialogue option. A warden should have the right to be cranky if he/she so wishes to.
The elf origin has specific rude conversation options, like "STFU human lord." HN should have the choice of "I am still mourning, can you please shut up about Duncan/Flemeth/Marjolaine/Felsi for one nanosecond? ThxBAI."
But you know, part of me is glad that we didn't get a peep out of what happened to Fergus at all. I think the game was trying to establish that you were indeed the last of the Couslands, and it makes the HN path a whole lot more dramatic.

Agreed. I was so happy to see Fergus i actually cried it was that powerful for me. Hasn't been on subsequent play throughs but it was a nice surprise the very first time.

I felt that Fergus was so nonchalant about it (true to his character, as he seemed the light-hearted sort), when by all accounts the HN must have been worried sick, and if he was my real brother I would have felt a bit like strangling him (in an affectionate way).
True, the arc of "you are probably the last of your kin" made it more flavorful and dramatic, I just felt like the companions didn't leave you room to grieve or even hope for your brother to be alive. The only person who asked about your background was Wynn, and Alistair had to be reminded that you survived a massacre. Instead the Warden has the sole duty of being shrink, confidante and avenger. Which is why (when played right) all your companions heart you so much in the end, but still, when I proper RP-ed it, I felt like throwing some of NPCs in Lake Calenhad.

And yes Fergus had this wonderful familiar comfortable feel to him. I almost felt like he WAS my brother (he certainly reminds me of my older brother who passed away years ago) and had a very much "older brother" feel to him. Whether I was a male or female PC. The entire family was warm and well written. Bryce is one of my favorite NPCs though his role in the game is so small, he has a major impact on my HNF (who I always play as "daddy's girl").
She agrees to stay in Highever and tend things while her father rides off to war and tells Duncan screw you when he wants to conscript her, only agreeing when Bryce tells her its her duty, that the Couslands always do their duty.

hehe sorry
hopefully in dragon age 2 if they keep an origins story like you have in DAO where you are your person until you get drafted something like that, you do get to complete your personal quest and tie up loose ends
because to me it doesnt seem right that your character goes out of his/hers to help everyone else get closure except yourself lol

It helps though some of the NPCs in the game sound like Fergus. I think the Redcliffe knight you see in Lothering (the one in the chantry) was voiced by Fergus' actor. I always lingered a little over that conversation on my HNF.

Yes, I agree, the HN family was awesomely written. The voice actors really have to be commended, because all of them felt so natural and warm. The first time I watched the Bryce dying scene (and I had chosen the dialogue option where he replies with "Only if you're willing to leave pieces of me behind, pup") I was crying. (My boyfriend was laughing at me, the meanie.)
Are you talking about Ser Bryant?
I always make Duncan invoke the Right of Conscription, I play the grief-stricken daughter who would rather die than leave her parents behind. (though the "couslands always do their duty" line is a very persuasive line)
And I am really truly sorry about your brother. I have two, and one of them has left the family, he refuses to see us (we do not know why). I haven't seen him for 5 years and he refuses to be found (sort of a real-life Korcari Wilds scenario, except with no darkspawn).
I send thee virtual hugs.

I know! The Warden has to tend to all his/her companions feelings, but no one wants to ask if the Warden has any personal quests. What about I give you -50 disapproval, you swamp witch. lol
(and I personally think the worst was when the dalish elf origin warden has to kill tamlen-turned-darkspawn. Everyone is like "oh, friend of yours. Too bad." No one asks you if you're alright, or if you want a proper burial. My poor elf.)

I will listen more closely when Ser Donall speaks in my next playthrough. I am definitely a Fergus fan, (my dialogue option is always "No darkspawn could beat Fergus!")

OMG no darlin the worst wasn't "Everyone" saying it. The worst was only Alistair noticing your pain and acknowleging it. These "friends" who have (At this point in the game) mostly topped out their approval with my Dalish had no clue (except for Al) who this tormented shriek was. He tries to offer you a "its really for mercy's sake" kind of response but it doesn't help when you feel like you have just been kicked in the gut. Tamlen's fate is another tear jerker moment for me even moreso because most of your party ignores it and then makes cutesy comments.
Yes! The cutesy comments totally killed what was supposed to be a sombre moment. Even Alistair just leaves you with that mercy statement and the body of Tamlen just disappears. (I let my elf stand there for ages. I was quite heartbroken.) Hello, I thought there was a reason Al asked how the Dalish buried their dead. I was waiting for a chance to put Tamlen to rest by having a tree planted over his remains.
As much as I love the "friends" you can make in DA:O its mostly a one-way street, you have to sweettalk them and make them happy and they don't feel compelled to react to your grief most of the time. (which I know, I know, would be too complicated, but it is quite immersion breaking at some points). I guess you just have to be happy with having them fight for you.

A little burial scene would have been really nice then esp considering you get to have a pyre for Cailan who my PC's usually didn't like. But considering how they handle the Warden Commander ending in the game this doesn't come as a great surprise for me. And I know the dumb comments are just the standard companion dialogues following that particular attack in the game but still yes its immersion breaking for me and especially wrenching (I unlocked the little mini-romance option with Tamlen). Before he attacks the PC he tells her, "I always loved you" and the attack has more of a "I'll make you kill me" feel to it than an actual concerted effort to kill the PC. SO she has the heartbreak of not only killing her clan mate who is suffering but also killing her first love too.

And none of my PC's ever liked Cailan, so the sad face that they put on your PC in cutscenes during RTO annoyed me quite a bit. Our PC's knew him for a day, what would warrant such sadness? (Unless you imagine some convoluted story behind it as a HN). The Dalish elf definitely deserved a cutscene, or at least more convo options.
Agreed. I avoided doing RtO on my Dalish because of that scene mostly. She told Cailan she was no friend of his (though his response always makes me giggle, he takes it all in stride and I get the feeling he is quite the charmer as that ALMOST makes me want to relent on him). Plus the behavior of Wynne and Alistair and some of the weirdness of the companions reactions (I mean HONESTLY -5 approval from Zev just for dispensing with Cailan's corpse in a respectful fashion. Truly one of the WTF moments of that particular DLC). This was the same with my City Elf too. In fact if anything she felt even more antipathy to him considering he seemed utterly clueless about how his wife was running the show in the Alienage.
For my HNF it was a different story as the nobles all seem to know of each other if not knowing each other intimately. Cailan even recognizes you as Bryce Cousland's youngest when you arrive in Ostagar. I found it much easier to like him and respond to him as my Cousland girl. And the grief on her face was a good response to the moment as it meant not so much his death and its resolution finally but also that it was part of a wrenching and emotional time in her life and has put Alistair in such a position that he must sieze the throne to protect his own life (or renounce it for the Theirin line forever).

Same here, don't give a damn of Cailan, the sade face during his pyre was not welcome to me specially after the parents, Fergus, Oriana, Oren, Gilmore and of course Iona/Dairren deaths.
I was also sad to not even be able to talk or help Iona's daughter when you had the possibility to give a decent funeral to dumber the king.

See I perceived it (on my HNF) as Cailan's pyre also kind of standing in for her family too since she never got that resolution for them.
And I hate that you can't help Amethyne either. One of the truly crappiest moments in the game for me.

If you want to bring in-game experiences into this, and say it's possible because you always fight outnumbered, given that every single battle in-game you either happen upon a mob that's unaware you're there (and able to take them out one group at a time) or you have help (Final Battle).
Also, just saying, the 300 example is not very good, considering that they all died in the end.
