Never fails. Every single time I look for Vartag, I go to the royal palace first both in the game and in the toolset. I always forget he's in the assembly. It just doesn't make sense to me. You'd think he'd be the first line of defense in the royal palace while Bhelen's behind closed doors.

The same reason if you don't show up immediately, Dulin goes to the Tavern or ambushes you outside of the Assembly, I guess: even if the would-be Kings themselves are hiding in their homes, they still need to communicate with the outside world.

Although Vartag's lack of presence will definitely make it easier for my character to just break into Bhelen's little study area. Sure the guards might attack when I try that, but I can take them. Besides, it's not like anyone actually cares if I enter the Palace and that would be the real obstacle...

Just following the DN specific lines to keep the trees simple!

Vartag: "I heard you had returned to us, exile. What insult do you mean by coming here?" (VO: cold)

TREE 1

1. There is a Blight coming. I need Bhelen's help.
Vartag: "After what you did to Trian, you come to your only living brother for help?" (VO: disgusted) *Go to tree 2*

2. I'm here as a Grey Warden, not an Aeducan.
Vartag: "House Aeducan struck your name from its records the day you killed Trian. With Endrin gone, Bhelen must take his throne." (VO: santimonious)
2a. I have a treaty compelling Orzammar to aid against a Blight. *Go to tree 2, line 1*
2b. It was Bhelen who killed Trian! *Go to tree 2, line 2*
2c. Bhelen set me up. He's the one who wanted Trian dead. *Go to tree 2, line 3*
2d. I would sooner see Orzammar fall than Bhelen on the throne!
Vartag: "I won't be passing that message on, exile. Your brother will be king soon. He's the one who decides who lives and who dies." (VO: coldly) *END DIALOGUE* [SET: Noble_Threaten_Bhelen]

3. I never got to congratulate my brother on his rise to power. [SET: Was_Conciliatory]
Vartag: "It's difficult to believe that. After you left, many cruel accusations fell on Bhelen. He could only assume they came from you." (VO: prying, trying to find out why the player's really here.)
Vartag: "Why would he trust you now?" (VO: scornful)
3a. I have a treaty compelling Orzammar to aid against a Blight. *Go to tree 2, line 1*
3b. It was Bhelen who killed Trian! *Go to tree 2, line 2*
3c. Bhelen set me up. He's the one who wanted Trian dead. *Go to tree 2, line 3*
3d. It's part of the game. He won. I'd have done the same.
Vartag: "If you wish to convince me of your good will, you'll have to show you've put the past behind you." (VO: pointed) *Go to tree 3, line 1 or tree 1, line 2d*
3e. I don't need his trust. I just want his head! *Go to response in tree 1, line 2d*

4. Only to tell Bhelen that the next time we meet, he dies.
Vartag: "I won't be passing that message on, exile. Your brother will be king soon. He's the one who decides who lives and who dies." (VO: coldly) *END DIALOGUE* [SET: Noble_Threaten_Bhelen]

TREE 2
1.  I have a treaty compelling Orzammar to aid against a Blight.
Vartag: "I have seen this treaty in the shapers' libraries. But it is only the king it compels, and your father has unfortunately passed on." (VO: insincere disappointment)
Vartag: "If you seek Bhelen's help, he can only give it from the throne. And only if no one stands in the way of his getting there." (VO: insincere disappointment, then pointed, almost threatening) *Go to tree 3*

2. It was Bhelen who killed Trian!
Vartag: "You should leave Orzammar now, exile. Seek whatever you wish on the surface, but there is nothing for you here." (VO: threatening)
2a. I have a treaty compelling Orzammar to aid against a Blight. *Go to tree 2, line 1*
2b. You know, don't you? Bhelen told you what happened.
Vartag: "As we were taught as children, our histories are never wrong. And the history of House Aeducan lists *you* as Trian's murderer." (VO: smirking) *Go to tree 2, line 1, line 4, or tree 1, line 2d*
2c. Let me talk to Bhelen. We can put this behind us. *Go to tree 2, line 4*
2d. I would sooner see Orzammar fall than Bhelen on the throne! *Go to tree 1, 2d*

3. Bhelen set me up. He's the one who wanted Trian dead. *Exactly the same responses as tree 2, line 2*

4. Let me talk to Bhelen. We can put this behind us.
Vartag: "Ha! There were many cruel whispers about Bhelen after you left, which he could only assume came from you." (VO: disapproving)
Vartag: "Why would he trust you now?" (VO: scornful)
4a. I have a treaty compelling Orzammar to aid against a Blight. *Go to tree 2, line 1*
4b. It was Bhelen who killed Trian! *Go to tree 2, line 2*
4c. Bhelen set me up. He's the one who wanted Trian dead. *Go to tree 2, line 3*
4d. It's part of the game. He won. I'd have done the same.
Vartag: "If you wish to convince me of your good will, you'll have to show you've put the past behind you." (VO: pointed) *Go to tree 3, line 1 or tree 1, line 2d*
4e. I don't need his trust. I just want his head! *Go to response in tree 1, line 2d*

5. No. I've come to kill him and take back what's mine!
Vartag: "I won't be passing that message on, exile. Your brother will be king soon. He's the one who decides who lives and who dies." (VO: coldly) *END DIALOGUE* [SET: Noble_Threaten_Bhelen]

TREE 3
1. If Bhelen promises me troops, I'll help him take the throne.
(IF: pass persuade) Vartag: "So you really have thrown your lot in with the surface. Very well. As long as you understand Orzammar is Bhelen's." (VO: surprised and amused)
Vartag: "I will allow you the chance to prove it." (VO: pointed)
1a. What must I do? *Go to tree 4*
1b. I will do nothing to compromise my honor.
Vartag: "You have no honor, kinslayer. It was stripped from you by the Assembly." (VO: curt)
Vartag: "Now, there is a way you could prove your good intentions. I will only ask you once; will you do it or not?" (VO: disrespectful) *Go to tree 4 or tree 1, line 2d*
1c. I would sooner see Orzammar fall than Bhelen on the throne! *Go to tree 1, 2d*

(IF: failed persuade) Vartag: "As if you would give up the throne of Orzammar to throw your lot in with these surfacers." (VO: scornful)
Vartag: "The prince has no reason to aid you, and I suggest you not seek his attention. You might not like what happens." (VO: threatening) *END DIALOGUE*

2. Are you asking for my help?
Vartag: "I'm saying that if you want a king who'll heed your call to fight the darkspawn, you'll have to show you've put the past behind you." (VO: curt and businesslike) *Go to tree 3, line 1 or tree 1, line 2d*

3. At least that would keep it in the family.
Vartag: "If you wish to convince me of your good will, you'll have to show you've put the past behind you." (VO: pointed) *Go to tree 3, line 1 or tree 1, line 2d*

4. I would sooner see Orzammar fall than Bhelen on the throne! *Go to tree 1, 2d*

TREE 4
Vartag: "Harrowmont has been buying the votes of every deshyr he can turn, but he is running out of promises." (VO: explaining)
Vartag: "Recently, he offered the same estate to both Lady Dace and young Lord Helmi. He hopes the vote will pass before he has to pay up." (VO: explaining)
Vartag: "I have the promissory notes, but they know of my loyalties to Bhelen. If you, on the other hand, brought them this evidence..." (VO: hinting, persuading)
Vartag: "They know you have little love for your brother and will believe you. Prove your loyalty and perhaps you'll get the reunion you desire." (VO: firm, persuasive)

1. I'll find Lady Dace and Lord Helmi right now.
Vartag: "Lady Dace doesn't leave the quarter much. But Lord Helmi's adventurous, likes to spend his time at Tapsters... in the Commons." (VO: explaining, sounds a little disdainful talking about the commons)
(IF: Told Dulin_Quest) Vartag: "And just to be clear, all deals are off if you fight that Proving for Harrowmont." (VO: a warning) *END DIALOGUE*
Vartag: "Remember, don't tell them you got these papers from me. You learned of them and drew your own conclusions." (VO: sly, he is doing something sort of illegal but he is trying to make it seem like he's doing something perfectly all right.) *END DIALOGUE*

2. I'll have to think about this.
(IF: Told Dulin_Quest) Vartag: "If you change your mind, this offer still stands... so long as you do not champion Harrowmont in the Proving." (VO: cautioning) *END DIALOGUE*
Vartag: "Don't expect this offer to last. If my prince hears you swore allegiance to his enemy, he won't be so friendly next time." (VO: a warning)
Vartag: "I will be here if you change your mind." (VO: curt) *END DIALOGUE*

3. I would sooner see Orzammar fall than Bhelen on the throne! *Go to tree 1, 2d*

I will put up additional Vartag trees tomorrow. There's extra companion dialogue that I would have never known about despite my many games because it's triggered through flip-flopping. Wynne's tree is triggered by Vartag being outraged you championed Harrowmont and you're now coming to him and you tell him that it's all part of your plan to betray him. Wynne defends Harrowmont and tries to reason with you, pointing out how Bhelen has destroyed you. It's sweet how she sticks up for the DN. Wish I could have heard it under different circumstances. Sten is just displeased you're playing double agent. Shale is tired of all the running around.

I find it somwhat amusing that while some Humans have problems with Elves in Fereldon as romantic interests, Dwarves are readily accepted. Guess they have not met Oghren yet....

Thats because dwarven women are far sexier then all the other races.

Wait...are you saying Wynne seems to be aware of your Origin? Wow...I guess her asking how you became a GW does come in handy...

And I love how Bhelen and Vartag are still so paranoid that you're trying to get the throne. I mean, there's really no direct way to do it at the moment...although siding with Harrowmont is really your best bet on that front. Does setting the 'noble threaten' or 'noble congratulatory' flags do anthing other than influence if Vartag will talk to you?

Brilliant!
Curious, the drunken dwarf in Tapsters, is he singing in dwarven or is it just drunken slur? (or are they simply one and the same)

I assumed that it was drunken slur, since nobody else uses dwarven words.

I say drunken slurring, as there seems to be ****** all dwarven words in the game.... Anyone got a save file lurking about for that? Or I go poke toolset to see if it's there... not on computer with toolset on it, so can't help atm but will try to remember when i get homeeeeee

Atrast Vala — A greeting.

Mekty nea shrowkan ton yo — "I don't want to kill you."

Thaig — A dwarven colony.

Dwarva — The word dwarves use to refer to themselves. The human word most likely derives from it.

Salroka — "Good friend." Commonly used by the casteless dwarves.

Atrasta nal tunsha — "May you always find your way in the dark." An equivalent of "Farewell."

This was on the wiki. It kind of seems that they HAVE a language, but they either don't remember it a la the elves (unlikely given their obsession with tradition and the fact they've never actually been conquered) or they just decided to switch to suface-language at some point, which is also really weird given their disdain for and fear of the surface.

yeah, I find it all weird. The Shaperate would never forget something like an entire language! It's game mechanics, I suppose.

Well, it does say 'translation' right? And you need to ask Oghren what the memorial slab says, despite the fact that while a DC may not be literate (unless Rica, who learned for being a NH, taught her) a DN definitely is and shouldn't need a warrior to explain these things.

The VO notes for the song in the bar doesn't say anything about it being dwarven.  It just instructs the speaker not to slur it too much.

I haven't seen a lot of dwarven words from poking around in the toolset, but I've yet to actually explore everything since it's so massive. I have been keeping a note file with all the interesting dwarven slang that I've come across. I'll keep adding more as I go, but here's what I've complied so far.

--------------

"Veata" is pronounced VEE-et-ah and means "halt."
Example: "Veata! This land is held in trust for the sovereign dwarven kings. I cannot allow entry at this time."

Atrast vala = (a-TRAST VA-la) a formal greeting.
Example: "Atrast vala, Warden. Your arrival is a mixed blessing."
(literally, "speak" or "find your tongue")

Valos atredum = (VAH-lows a-TRAY-doom), the favor of the ancestors.
Example: "It is not just a tournament. It is how the ancestors show valos atredum: their voice."

"Mother of dust!" (swearing)

"Sodding ancestors, what do they teach you on the surface? You fight like a bleedin' archdemon!" (sodding ancestors = ****ing god!)

"Sweet bloody Stone!"

"find a vein" = "strike it rich"
Example: "Where else would I go? Just because you and Rica managed to find a vein doesn't make anything different for the rest of us."

salroka = (sal-ROW-cah) Friend.

"Stone, no!" = "****, no!"
Example: "Stone, no! You think Jarvia'd give me a hug and kiss for taking down her lover?"

"Holy sodding Stone!" = "Holy ****ing ****."
Example: "Holy sodding Stone! Was that you? Word's out Jarvia's whole crew was slaughtered in their beds."

"Well, I'll be a drunken nug." (realizing)

"Feeding the lava" = "sleeping with the fishes"
Example: "Jarvia's been real shrewd. Some of the men thought Beraht made a bad choice in her, but they're all feeding the lava."

silk-and-steel duster = fancy mother****er
Example: "Wait. I heard some silk-and-steel duster was looking for a certain someone all over Dust Town. I'm guessing that's you."

Deep lords = derogatory term for nobles
Example: "The deep lords burn it into us the day we're born, so no one accidentally oversteps her place."

"no dust off my back" = "no skin off my back"

"hey, it's your bones that'll turn up in the lava" (my note -- probably  means "hey, your funeral")

"haven't seen nose or heel" = "haven't seen hide or hair"
Example: "But since the boy was born... I've not seen nose or heel of the lout. And me alone on the street, forbidden to return to my family unless I--"

Funny line: "I've never met a surfacer, though. I-I thought it might not be safe." (VO: like someone from Nebraska asking if people get shot all the time in LA)

"Atrast tunsha" = goodbye  (a-TRAST TON-shah)

"You're going to pay for this... you baseborn dung-beetle!" (Beraht insult)

"Bemot's beard!" = cussing (gateguard said it)
"Blood of the paragons!" = cussing (generic guard said it)
"Caridin's teeth!" = cussing (goilinar said it)
"Nug-dung!" = cussing (olinda)
"Paragon's teeth!" = cussing (proving guard)
"What the nug!" = cussing (thug1)
"Bronto ******!" = cussing (thug2)
"Oh, ancestors have mercy." (adal helmi)
"Sod it! Sod it all!" (deepscout)
"Stone-cursed duster!" (frandlin)
"By the boots of my ancestors!" (frandlin)
"Paragon's blood!" (serblackstone)
"Paragons of Stone!" (trian)
"Blood of my ancestors!" (weaponmerchant)
"Stone-cursed nug whomper!" (armor merchant)
"Nug-crud!" (silk merchant)
"Dust bugger!" (dwarf merchant)
"Ortan's teeth!" (Bhelen)

"I hope you get trampled by a bronto." (threaten)

Are they actually supposed to say that? I haven't checked in a while, but I could have sworn they said "Halt! This land..." and "It is how the ancestos show their favor."

If you do Provings against Bhelen (doesn't matter if you talked to Vartag first and then betrayed him or just did Dulin's quest before talking to Vartag -- I am starting the dialogue where both trees dovetail into wanting to make amends with Bhelen).

PC: I need to talk to Bhelen.
Vartag: "Well, you have an unusual way of showing it. Why would the prince possibly meet with someone who came out publicly against him?" (VO: scornful)

1. I want to make it up to Bhelen. He's the rightful king.
(failed persuade check) Vartag: "That is the most transparent ploy I've ever seen." (VO: mocking)
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

(passed persuade check) Vartag: "Nothing would make up for what you've done. Unless..." (VO: dismissive, then reconsidering)
(IF: DN) Vartag: "The usurper knows the history between you and Bhelen." (VO: considering)
Vartag: "Harrowmont has no reason to believe you're anything but loyal." (VO: considering)
(IF: Sten in party) Sten: "There are not enough of you for all the alliances you make." (VO: disapproving) *Go to Sten Tree 1*
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "Bah. Why are we even discussing this? Fool's errand upon fool's errand, that is all it ever seems to get up to."

(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)

2. And now Harrowmont trusts me. Unlike your other spies.
(failed persuade check) Vartag: "He trusts you because you serve him. And that means Prince Bhelen has no business with you." (VO: dismissive)
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

(passed persuade check)
Vartag: "Hmm. I see your point. Had you come to us first, Harrowmont would have suspected you." (VO: thinking)
Vartag: "But now, he has no reason to think you're anything other than his champion, on the Proving grounds and off." (VO: realizing)
(IF: Wynne in party) Wynne: "What are you doing? You gave Lord Harrowmont your word!" (VO: outraged) *Go to Wynne Tree*
Vartag: "Are you saying you'd infiltrate his ranks for us? Let the prince know what's happening on the inside?" (VO: seizing on a good idea)

3. I want to tell him to back down. He'll never be king.
Vartag: "Hope you keep that sense of humor when the Assembly votes Harrowmont out on his ear." (VO: not amused) *END DIALOGUE*

WYNNE TREE
Vartag: "My lady, you do not know Harrowmont as we do. Long has he plotted to steal the throne from the Aeducans--" (VO: in an overly polite, sweet way trying to win someone over)
(IF: PC is dwarf noble) Wynne: "Just as your Prince Bhelen plotted to have his siblings killed and exiled?" (VO: not buying it)
(IF: PC is NOT dwarf noble) Wynne: "And they say your prince killed his own brother and father." (VO: with distaste)
Wynne: "It seems it is only Lord Harrowmont's influence that prevented him from profiting from his crime." (VO: approves of Harrowmont)
Vartag: "Keep your companion under control. I would hate to see her thrown into the Deep Roads because of a... cultural misunderstanding." (VO: threatening quietly)

(IF: PC is dwarf noble)
Wynne: "Don't do this. Your brother used you once; he will do so again." (VO: a reasoned appeal to the player)
1. He is still family. I must find it in me to forgive him.
(passed persuade check) Wynne: "Then you are a better person than I am." (VO: grudingly)

(failed persuade check) Wynne: "Forgive him, yes, but from a distance. Must you get so close?" (VO: appealing to the player's good sense)
1a. I do not wish to argue this. I made my decision. *See line 4*
1b. Yes, if only to irritate you. *Same response as line 4*
1c. You're right. I shouldn't be so foolhardy. *See line 2*
1d. Fine. If it will please you, I will not work with Bhelen. *See line 3*

2. You're right. I shouldn't be so foolhardy.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

3. Fine. If it will please you, I will not work with Bhelen.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

4. I do not wish to argue this. I made my decision.
Wynne - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
(IF: Sten in party) Sten - [APPROVAL: low decrease]

(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

(IF: PC is NOT dwarf noble)
Wynne: "Harrowmont seems an honorable man. This Prince Bhelen will not even deign to speak with you. Why should you help him?" (VO: appealing to the player's good sense)

(IF: Dwarf Commoner) 1. Working against him might harm Rica and my nephew.
(medium persuade) Wynne: "I suppose I never considered that..." (VO: realizing)
(no persuade) Wynne: "But he seems like a thoroughly loathsome individual. I think you are making a mistake." (VO: dislike for Bhelen)
1a. I do not wish to argue this. I made my decision.
Wynne - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
(IF: Sten in party) Sten - [APPROVAL: low decrease]
1b. It's my mistake to make then.
Wynne - [Approval: low decrease]
1c.  Fine. If it will please you, I will not work with Bhelen.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

2. I should not judge him for understanding him fully. *Same responses and persuade checks as line 1 above*

3. I didn't like Harrowmont that much.
Wynne - [Approval: low decrease]

4. I just want to explore my options.
Wynne - [Approval: low decrease]

(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)

STEN TREE 1
(IF: PC is dwarf) 1. This is how things are done in Orzammar. It's politics.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*

(IF: PC not dwarf) 2. I don't know enough about either to make a decision.
Sten: "Then choosing one is the same as choosing the other. What matters is having the courage to make the choice." (VO: sanctimonious)
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*

3. I'm just keeping our options open.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*

4. I am just being cautious.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*

5. I think it shows cunning and circumspectness.
Sten: "You will have to choose eventually." (VO: stern) *Go to Sten tree 2*

STEN TREE 2
1. Isn't it obvious I've chosen to serve Bhelen?
(passed persuade) Sten: "Obvious? Hmph." (VO: uncertain)

(failed persuade) Sten: "All that is obvious is that you're acting like a coward." (VO: sanctimonious) *Go to Sten tree 3*

2. I know what I'm doing. Don't worry.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)

3. I prefer to take a more cautious approach.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)

4. Very well, perhaps we should stick with Harrowmont.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

STEN TREE 3
1. Then I'm a coward. Now shut up.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)

2. I don't just bumble into things like you do.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)

3. We'll have to agree to disagree.
(IF: Shale in party) Shale: "And it was picked to be a Grey Warden... why?" (VO: rolling her eyes, sarcastic)
Sten: "Have it your way." (VO: backing down)

4. Then I suppose we should stick to supporting Harrowmont.
Vartag: "You and I have nothing more to discuss until you come back to kneel before the rightful king." (VO: cold, a little vicious) *END DIALOGUE*

(NOTE: After the passed and failed persuade dialogues complete, Vartag then makes arrangements for the PC to either deliver the papers to Dace or assigns you to Jarvia depending on how far the PC has gone quest-wise.)

Who here loves the Aeducan symbol?
I would choose Bhelen just to keep this as the Dwarven symbol.
