Always wanted to try the Anora romance, but could never make a human male model I liked well enough to play for the whole game.

One thing that DAO did really well with all the romances (and everyone over in ME-land hopes they'll steal for ME3) is that it's not just talk, talk, talk, roll-in-the-hay before final battle. The relationships are more dynamic, and feel like they have highs and lows throughout the game, even though some of them you can consummate pretty quickly. I was pretty surprised how early in the game I got to the love-y scene with Morrigan, and later on I knew I was in trouble when she asked "What is your opinion on love?" (I figured out pretty early on that doing any quest where love was involved meant major Disapproval from Morrigan, so I knew there was no good answer to this one.)

But the different romances are meant to appeal to different people.

Anyone with a tiny bit of sense knows that the Morrigan romance is the deepest and best in the game :P

I haven't managed to get very far with that romance as the one male character I've managed to bring myself to play (a HN for the Prince Consort ending) is just really, really boring. I really think the Alistair fangirls have ruined that Origin for me... Posted Image

Ah, but if I'm not going to marry Alistair and become Queen then I'm going to find a more interesting origin (like a dwarf Posted Image) so I can't spare Loghain in that game and Anora goes off to the tower.

But my human nobles ALWAY marry Alistair and become queen. But I'm sure the way I go about that would not be classed as Alistair fangirlism!

Maybe not, but since I end up with about the same ending (Loghain dead, Anora deposed, me as Alistair's Queen) then the Alistair fangirls and all the fanfics I've seen have made it almost impossible for me to play a HN. Posted Image

As I have said many times before. There is a difference between a fan and a fanboy/girl.

Throw in a royal scandal, and you've got my ending too!  Poor Alistair.  It actually is a pretty depressing ending for him.  I like to think he finds himself a very hot mistress!

Edit: And I'm completely a fangirl.  Just not an ALISTIAR fangirl.  I love the political marriage.

Neither did anyone else! That's why Howe went crazy and started killing people! Poor Horace...

You let other people's squee ruin an aspect of the game for you?  *scratches head*

Maybe you need a no-fanfiction policy.  It works for me.

I like fanfics, there's just not very much diversity and I don't think Alistair is so amazing that he justifies all the 'pining away for the rest of their lives' or 'killing themselves (by means of Archdemon or otherwise) because the relationship ended.' He's a well-written character that many people enjoy a romance with but all of it is just over-the-top and sends me running in the other direction. It's not like I want to resent his romance, it just sort of happened.

I think that's part of why my policy works.  I don't have any vision of Alistair (or Zevran or anyone else) but David Gaider's, my own, and the insights I've gotten from discussing the actual game writing here in the forum.  That's part of why I don't enjoy ff.  IMO it often detracts.  Well, that, and quite often it's eye-bleedingly bad.  No offense to any ff writers present.

None taken. Posted Image I don't write romance anyway.

I think another problem is that, historically accurate or not, being asked to accept that becoming a mistress is a positive outcome and not degrading is far too much of a wall-banger for me. And as far complaining about getting dumped...well you are the one who put him on the throne in the first place and if you paid the slightest bit of attention to how nobility works it shouldn't be such a surprise.
