PARTY BARKS

The following are "party barks" in which you enter an area, one member in your group will make a random comment. Here's the list of dialogue for the dwarven areas:

FROSTBACK MOUNTAIN
Alistair: "Most traders aren't allowed into Orzammar, so they just sort of... gather near the doors. There's no laws up here at all, I'm told." (VO: not impressed by the place)
Wynne: "Oh my. I did not expect it to be this crowded." (VO: A little surprised.)
Leliana: "Look at all those people hawking their wares! It's almost like a little city." (VO: surprise)
Morrigan: "Are we... descending into the underground? The thought of so much rock over one's head is... disquieting." (VO: disturbed by the thought)
Zevran: "Are we going to get to enter Orzammar? I don't believe they allow non-dwarves within." (VO: excited by the possibility)
Sten: "All the darkspawn are fleeing the underground, and we are going there." (VO: sour)
Shale: "Orzammar lies this way, no? They make golems in such a place, do they not?" (VO: a bit excited)

ORZAMMAR - HALL OF HEROES
Alistair: "Those statues are dwarven Paragons, if I remember right. The best of their ancestors." (VO: awestruck -- he is seeing a great hallway of huge statues)
Wynne: "How magnificent. These must be the statues of the dwarven Paragons."
Leliana: "Do you think they sell miniatures of these in the city? I would love to have some on my mantle." (VO: delighted)
Morrigan: "If there is anything complimentary to be said about these people, 'tis that they possess a remarkable facility for carving stone." (VO: begruding admiration)
Zevran: "Ahh, the Paragons, I believe. The dwarves worship their own ancestors, if you can believe it." (VO: in a "crazy kids" tone)
Sten: "Is it just me, or do all these statues look alike?" (VO: curious)
Shale: "Imagine if all of those were golems..." (VO: awed)

ORZAMMAR - COMMONS (after entering from Hall of Heroes, after cutscene of fight between guards)
Alistair: "Wow. So... this is Orzammar? It's huge!" (VO: amazed -- he's in a giant underground city)
Wynne: "For a tiny people they certainly build high ceilings...:" (VO: amused)
Leliana: "It's... big..." (VO: wonder)
Morrigan: "Hmm. Where did they put all the rock, I wonder..." (VO: in awe, looking around)
Zevran: "Now that is a remarkable amount of lava. Do you think anyone ever falls in?" (VO: a bit amazed)
Sten: "Hmph. Not bad." (VO: grudingly impressed)
Shale: "Lava bad. Don't go near the lava." (VO: nervous)

ORZAMMAR - COMMONS (as player comes down the steps that lead to the Deep Roads)
Alistair: "The Deep Roads are home to the darkspawn now. Oddly they're supposed to be safer to travel during a Blight." (VO: thinks it's ironic)
Wynne: "Does that lead out to the Deep Roads? I hear they're crawling with darkspawn."
Leliana: "Hey, what's down there?" (VO: curious)
Morrigan: "This no doubt leads out to the Deep Roads, the ancient passages that once led to the other dwarven kingdoms."
Zevran: "It seems darker this way. Perhaps this is how one leaves the dwarven city?" (VO: curious)
Sten: "Why would such a small people build things so tall? They must own an impressive array of ladders." (VO: puzzled)
Shale: "Hmph. At least there are no pigeons here." (VO: faint disgust)

ORZAMMAR - COMMONS (just outside Tapster's Tavern)
Alistair: "What is that smell? Dwarven vomit? Charming." (VO: almost retching)
Wynne: "Is that drunken singing I hear?" (VO: amused)
Leliana: "Watch out for that puddle of... whatever it is." (VO: a little disgusted)
Morrigan: "I do not even want to think from what manner of substance a cave-dwelling people would create their spirits." (VO: disgusted)
Zevran: "Drunken dwarves? What could be the harm in a few of those?" (VO: amused)
Sten: "...I should have stayed in that cage." (VO: horrified)
Shale: "I hope that is someone being murdered and not simply singing." (VO: because the singing is TERRIBLE)

ORZAMMAR - TAPSTER'S TAVERN
Alistair: "I tried dwarven ale once. I thought it was just something they tricked surfacers into drinking, as a joke." (VO: a bit disgusted)
Leliana: "I once drank a thimble of dwarven ale. Woke up a week later in Jader wearing nothing but my shoes and a towel." (VO: remembering something amusing)
Wynne: "Oh, wonderful! A dwarven tavern! I've always wanted to try some of their ale. I hear it's quite potent." (VO: delighted)
Morrigan: "Ugh. Just... do not buy anything. Or touch anything. Or... sit anywhere." (VO: disgusted)
Zevran: "Do you know that dwarven ale isn't truly ale at all? And it's *black.* Marvelous!" (VO: amused)
Sten: "Is this... some sort of mass suicide?" (VO: baffled)
Shale: "A brawl would be a pleasant diversion right about now." (VO: eager)

ORZAMMAR - PROVING
Alistair: "The Proving Grounds. Blood sport entertainment for the masses, at its best!" (VO: amused)
Wynne: "They don't kill each other in the arena, do they? I mean... why would anyone find that entertaining? Ugh." (VO: disgusted)
Leliana: "I hear there are all kinds of rules that govern the Proving. They get very mad if you break the rules."
Morrigan: "Ah, the highlight of underground existence, I take it." (VO: chuckling)
Zevran: "Hmm. I hear that if the spectators don't approve of a match's outcome, they rush the field and kill the fighters." (VO: amused)
Sten: "I thought their warriors, at least, would be bigger." (VO: disappointed)
Shale: "What do they have to prove? They're all soft, filthy things that are going to die." (VO: incredulous -- punch "prove")

ORZAMMAR - DIAMOND QUARTER (shortly after entering the area from Commons)
Alistair: "So the closer you live to the surface, the higher class you are? Unless you're actually *on* the surface?" (VO: confused)
Leliana: "From what I've heard of dwarven politics, I'm almost surprised we haven't seen blood running these streets." (VO: amused, making a joke)
Wynne: "Oh, this is grand. The noble houses do love their luxuries, don't they?" (VO: keen observation)
Zevran: "Let me guess. This is where the rich dwarves live, yes?" (VO: chuckling)
Morrigan: "Ah, the social strata quickly makes itself evident no matter where one goes." (VO: bizarrely pleased)
Shale: "A higher class of midget lives here, I'll wager." (VO: snickering, punch "here")

ORZAMMAR - DIAMOND QUARTER (just outside the palace)
Alistair: "So how is it the dwarves have a king? I thought they... voted on everything, or something like that?" (VO: honestly confused)
Leliana: "You know, after all this is over, I wouldn't mind getting a job here. I could sing, tell stories, help the king get items from high shelves..." (VO: musing to herself)
Wynne: "So this is the seat of the king. Except he isn't sitting there at the moment, I suppose." (VO: wry)
Morrigan: "For such a short people they do rather like their buildings... tall."
Zevran: "This is the royal palace, then? Hmm. What treasures could lie within?" (VO: thoughts of stealing in his head)
Sten: "Yes, very nice. Where are the darkspawn?" (VO: impatient)
Shale: "Such big houses they have." (VO: mocking)

ORZAMMAR - DIAMOND QUARTER (at a vantage point where one can look out on entire city)
Alistair: "Huh. That's a lot of lava. I guess they just hope it never erupts?" (VO: he's looking out on a very impressive vista)
Wynne: "Wonder why they decided to build a city around streams of lava. It's an accident waiting to happen." (VO: wry)
Leliana: "I require a moment of silence to take in this magnificent sight." (VO: awe)
Morrigan: "Must we stand so close to the edge? Can you not feel the mountain directly over our heads?" (VO: ****ing to hide the fact that she is feeling claustrophobic)
Zevran: "Last city of the dwarves. Just think: in another century or so, the only dwarves left may be on the surface!" (VO: looking out at entire city, marveling)
Sten: "I suppose that building the city in the midst of a pool of molten rock saves invaders the trouble of burning it." (VO: thoughtfully, to himself)
Shale: "Even I could shatter from this height, surely..." (VO: nervous)

ORZAMMAR - DUST TOWN
Alistair: "Let me guess: this is where the poor people live?" (VO: stating the obvious)
Oghren: "Let's not spend too much time here. I think poverty might be catching." (VO: rude)
Wynne: "Oh dear. The differences between this side of town and the others is... striking." (VO: shocked)
Leliana: "I... I think I just stepped in something." (VO: disgusted)
Morrigan: "Why do the poor not rise up against their betters? This I never understood." (VO: sincere, she really doesn't get it)
Zevran: "A-ha! I smell a seedy underbelly, warts and all!" (VO: pleased)
Shale: "We are here to kill them all, yes? For sport?" (VO: hopeful, but not really serious)

ANVIL OF THE VOID (upon entering Branka's campsite)
Oghren: "If Branka is anywhere, this has to be it. She will not be unprepared."
Alistair: "We have to be getting close. If this Branka has survived, she'll be wary."
Wynne: "We must be getting close. Can this Branka have existed down here for so long and remained approachable?"
Morrigan: "Branka must be close. How obsessed is she to have existed here for so long?"
Zevran: "We have to be getting close. I wonder what state this Branka is in after living here so long?"
Sten: "A troubled place. If this Branka is here, we must be wary of her."
Shale: "The Anvil of the Void is near. I can feel it." (VO: intense)

DEAD TRENCHES (upon entering shrine to the Legion of the Dead, where altar is)
Oghren: "Bownammar. I thought it would have fallen into dust by now." (VO: in wonder)
Alistair: "How long do you think it's been since anyone has walked in these halls?" (VO: hushed, reverential)
Wynne: "Oh, I can just imagine how grand this fortress must have been, before the darkspawn took it." (VO: in wonder)
Leliana: "Funny how we haven't seen any of those nug-things for a while. Do you think the darkspawn ate them all?"
Morrigan: "'Tis... a shrine of some kind. Who would be worshipped, here? And why?" (VO: amazed, looking around)
Zevran: "How many such places have been lost to the darkspawn, I wonder? Dwarven marvels throughout Thedas, all lost to shadow." (VO: a bit saddened)
Sten: "Hallowed ground. Blood has been spilled in battle here." (VO: respectful)
Shale: "This... is a holy place. Do I remember? I... am not sure." (VO: reverent)

ORTAN THAIG
Alistair: "*Whistles* How long do you think it's been since dwarves lived here? Centuries?" (VO: a bit amazed)
Oghren: "I'm, uh, I'm overwhelmed. I... I need, uh, a moment of silence. *Farts*" (VO: Respectfully ... and then ... well ... long pause after the line, followed by a spectacular fart)
Wynne: "All this used to be part of the dwarven kingdom. This, and more. I am finally beginning to understand the scope of their loss." (VO: sadly)
Leliana: "I wonder if the dwarves will ever be able to reclaim their lost thaigs."
Morrigan: "This is a graveyard. Once the dwarves lived here... but no longer." (VO: grim)
Zevran: "All manners of creature will rush in to replace a vacant habitat. This is no different, I wager."
Sten: "It's like a severed limb." (VO: musing)
Shale: "Hmm. No, I don't think I have ever been here before." (VO: disappointed)

PARAGON OF HER KIND - CARIDIN'S CROSS (distant approach to where Legion of the Dead make their stand)
Alistair: "Something had some fun with these darkspawn. No finesse in the cuts but I can't argue the results." (VO: awed, reverential -- like seeing the holy grail)
Wynne: "The darkspawn have enemies of their own down here. Brutal ones." (VO: awe)
Leliana: "Ugh, someone left a mess. Who does that even to a darkspawn?" (VO: speechless)
Oghren: "Corpses. Everywhere. That'll be the Legion. Our best and worst."
Morrigan: "Someone has already made a brutal start on the darkspawn. Impressive." (VO: she has given this some thought)
Zevran: "Nothing subtle about what happened here. Someone enjoys killing these things." (VO: uncertain)
Sten: "Someone down here takes a great deal of pleasure in a darkspawn kill." (VO: curious)
Shale: "Looks like someone's been having fun down here. I'm jealous." (VO: amused)

PARAGON OF HER KIND - CARIDIN'S CROSS (close approach to where Legion of the Dead make their stand)
Alistair: "More dead. If nothing else, our mystery friends are prolific." (VO: awed, reverential -- like seeing the holy grail)
Wynne: "More dead. I hope whoever did this is choosy about their targets." (VO: awe)
Leliana: "You think whoever did this will stop long enough to see we're not darkspawn?" (VO: speechless)
Oghren: "As active as ever, those Legion boys. Never leave a darkspawn walking."
Morrigan: "Seems our unseen friends have more than a passing hatred for darkspawn." (VO: she has given this some thought)
Zevran: "These kills show the zeal of men driven by blood. Not that it's always a bad thing." (VO: uncertain)
Sten: "The individual brutality here was unnecessary. These are not precision kills." (VO: curious)
Shale: "Think if we ask nicely they'll let us join in?" (VO: chuckling)

PARAGON OF HER KIND - DEAD TRENCHES
(VO for all, but Shale: Dour at the state of the land. "This land has changed hands so many times, it's almost pointless.")
Oghren: "We've lost and taken the Trenches so many times, even the Memories can't track it."
Alistair: "These ruins have seen hundreds of battles. While we rally, the Blight never leaves the dwarves."
Wynne: "The Blight never ends for the dwarves. How many generations have fought over the Trenches?"
Morrigan: "A place of unending war. I can feel it, and I'm not even a dwarf."
Zevran: "Such a depressing place to keep fighting over. How often have they passed this back and forth?"
Sten: "The scars here are deep. This place has changed hands countless times."
Shale: "The Dead Trenches. I remember its name, but nothing else." (VO: reverent)

PARAGON OF HER KIND - DEEP ROADS
(VO for all, but Shale: Dour. This place is dark and looks like it's part of a losing battle.)
Oghren: "There used to be roads to a dozen thaigs. Not in my lifetime, though."
Alistair: "These used to be highways as busy as any surface trade route. Looks like only the military travel here now."
Wynne: "This used to be part of an empire. Lost to darkness."
Morrigan: "How long before Orzammar loses this to the darkness completely? They are in retreat."
Zevran: "Another depressing tunnel full of death. No wonder we see so many dwarves on the surface."
Sten: "This is full of the signs of slow retreat. How great was the empire of their ancestors?"
Shale: "Wilhelm found me somewhere down here. I wish I knew where exactly." (VO: annoyed)

ANVIL OF THE VOID (after Branka's ambient lines in the second part of her camp)
(VO for all, but Shale: Stunned, horrified about details of plot. "This person did the worst thing I've ever heard of. I can't even comprehend how someone gets to that point.")
Oghren: "She's lost herself. She sacrificed our kin to breed darkspawn decoys. Can even the anvil bring her back?"
Sten: "Oghren's woman has lost herself. You cannot betray your own like this... breed them... and remain one of them."
Morrigan: "This anvil must be powerful. There is no other excuse to betray so much of herself."
Zevran: "Such a pretty face for a monster. To breed her people into spawn... incredible."
Wynne: "She bred her people into darkspawn. She is mad."
Alistair: "No one does this and keeps themselves. I don't care what Oghren says. To do this, she's insane."
Shale: "The problem with soft, squishy brains is that they go sour. Take the dwarven woman, for instance." (VO: amused observation)

IMMEDIATELY BEFORE BROODMOTHER, DURING REVEAL AFTER LAST HESPITH LINE
(VO for all, but Shale: Stunned horror. "This is the most awful abomination I have ever seen.")
Oghren: "Sodding Stone, what have they done?"
Alistair: "Maker’s Breath! What have they made?"
Wynne: "Maker's breath! This cannot be!"
Morrigan: "By all that is right!"
Zevran: "This is not for my eyes."
Sten: "Abomination!"
Shale: "Unbelievable!" (VO: horrified)

AFTER HESPITH DEATH (AFTER BROODMOTHER)
(VO for all, but Oghren and Shale: Brooding anger and horror at what they were forced to witness. "I've never seen people treated so badly. If someone allowed this, what kind of monster are they?")
Oghren: "That... that thing was a cousin. And there's worse to come? Branka can't have known." (VO: desperate to believe Branka didn't allow this to happen.)
Sten: "If this was allowed to happen, if there is betrayal here, the greatest monster is yet to come."
Alistair: "I dread what is coming. Could Branka have been complicit in this? Could anyone?"
Wynne: "There's a monster yet to come. With a face that hides it."
Morrigan: "If this was allowed, someone has reduced these people to the most basic of components. A true monster."
Zevran: "We could have taken her to Branka. What's worse than what we've already seen?"
Shale: "I see this is about to get even worse." (VO: quiet, horrified)

AFTER HESPITH RUNS OFF (after meeting her)
(VO for all, but Oghren and Shale: Growing concern. The horrors they have seen are slowly growing worse.)
Oghren: "What happened here? Branka has to explain this. She has to." (VO: Trying to believe Branka could still explain the horrible things he's seeing.)
Alistair: "What was done to these people? There's worse to come?"
Wynne: "And still no Branka. It is growing doubtful anyone could survive this unchanged.”
Morrigan: “Darker and darker. I thought it was black as it was.”
Zevran: “This is no longer entertaining. What was done to these people?”
Sten: “There's worse to come. That woman, she's seen things a mortal mind can't grasp.”
Shale: “Is it certain we need to be here? This cannot end well.” (VO: unnerved)

BEFORE ENCOUNTERING HESPITH
(VO for all, but Shale: Trepidation. There’s an eerie voice singing on the wind. Something very bad happened here.)
Oghren: “I know that voice from somewhere, but it's changed. Wrong.”
Zevran: “A voice that must have once held great beauty. Raises the hairs on my neck now.”
Alistair: “That voice sends a chill up my spine. This place is troubled, to say the least."
Morrigan: "A troubled song. The singer will be interesting."
Sten: "A chant... or dirge. Troubled to the bones."
Wynne: "A troubled place. Very bad things have happened here."
Shale: "Is that singing? Down in this place?" (VO: confused)

PARAGON OF HER KIND - DEEP ROADS POST PLOT (Post plot comment about how darkspawn have refortified. IF POSSIBLE.)
(VO for all, but Shale: Disapproving. "We spent hours clearing out the enemy. We go away for a moment, and they are back in force. Like vermin.")
Oghren: "Can't turn your head to cough without darkspawn creeping back."
Alistair: "We cut a hole, but the darkspawn have refilled it. That's what they do."
Wynne: "Our enemy has retaken the void we left. It's what the darkspawn do best."
Morrigan: "The spawn have retaken the Trenches. Again."
Zevran: "Ah, the spawn are back again. And after all our effort to clean the place up."
Sten: "This is what the dwarves suffer. They push the spawn from their border, only to see them return in greater numbers."
Shale: "The darkspawn will only return behind us, now. There is no end to them." (VO: told-you-so)

Hahaha, this has got to be fun. I'll try that when I'm done with my playthrough.
It seems like Awakening has somehow de-stabilized my game, so I don't want to jerk around with it (A-HA-HA) before I'm done with my Brosca.

EDIT: Somehow I wonder that fox news didn't have an angry seizure because of all the possible nude gaming in this game, yet...

She gets 'visitation', right? She gets to visit her son. It's different if she's of a noble House herself in a DC game but otherwise...if she's not the one taking care of the child then she doens't need to be spending a great deal of time with him. I suppose they could let her in to the nursery to see him whenever she wanted but that doesn't sound very likely.

I wrote it that Rica has no part of raising her son at all. And it made me sad and I had to call my sister up so I could speak to my three year old niece after. Sadly said niece was more interested in telling me about Peppa Pig and then wandering off to play with her cat after a "HELLO AUNTY I AM WATCHING PEPPA PIG."

You do know that Rica herself mentions that she sleeps with Little Endrin in her bed right? I would not go that far in saying she does not raise her child.

Obviously they are not going to let her take him out of the nursery much, let alone the palace. Considering dwarven politics I would not put it above someone to murder Bhelen's only child.

*Ponders*, what did the Dwarves use as a method of transportation between thaigs? Brontos? It seems that the concept of chariots is not alien to them (according to Oghren), so maybe that's what they used.

And it's very curious. The first step in human development is agriculture and being settled. Agriculture is an impossibility undergroud, so what was the first step in Dwarven development? If the human experience is to be applied to the Dwarves, then a hunter / gatherer society (which is all the Dwarves could be without farming) doesn't really evolve much. So how did the Dwarves become developped? Hmmm, interesting. I want to know about Dwarven cuisine *keeps pondering*

Don't worry; she'll get to be a proper mother once she's nobility herself and can have snooty servants put to death (not that I think she would but lower castes are always very nervous about those higher than them).

Does she really? I don't remember? Do you remember anything more about that? It seems like something that would clarify how much contact she had with him.

I will just copy the conversation from the toolset.

Rica: I wish you could meet little Endrin. But they don't let me bring him outside the Royal Nursery. ( V/O: Giddy with Joy. )
PC: A royal concubine? To who?
Rica: Prince Bhelen! Can you believe it? Now you see why I didn't tell you. It just seems so amazing. ( V/O: Giddy with Joy. )
Rica: My son is an Aeducan. The future king of Orzammar spends his nights in my bed. ( V/O As though she's living her dream )

She could be referring to Bhelen, but I doubt that.

I took that to mean 'Bhelen's going to be King and sleeping with me' but looking at the context it would also make sense to be talking about Endrin...if she sleeps in the nursery.

Why wouldn't she if that was the only place she could spend time with her child. You know young children must be breastfeed every two hours ( if I recall correctly ) when they are younger then six months.

I certainly don't envy women.

Do they? I'm guessing it would be pretty frequently. So she'd get to spend the night with her kid for as long as he'd need to nurse? That doesn't really say much about future contact.

Perhaps, perhaps not. But it would be foolish, to say the least, to deny a mother her right to raise her child at least in the first 6 months.

It is very healthy for a baby to be breastfeed for as long the mother is able to produce milk.

Most royal families had wet nurses, though, so breastfeeding wouldn't necessarily keep the mother and child together. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Rica was encouraged to stop breastfeeding as soon as possible; for some women, lactation inhibits ovulation, so the sooner they stop breastfeeding the sooner they can get pregnant again.
Wet nurses were also employed if the mother had diseases or took drugs, and considering the way all the other castes seem to be afraid of catching diseases from the casteless... Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to keep Rica away from Endrin out of prejudices.

Edit: Ha! Soignee just beat me to it. :P

Underground is teeming with life. Just not life that surface dwellers would find appealing to eat. But there are plenty of things to cultivate and eat: nugs, fungus, mosses, algaes, lichen, deep stalkers, insects, ect. We see no dwarven "farmers" caste, but I'd imagine that cultivating these things probably falls into the duties of one of the castes, perhaps servant or merchant.

Remeber Jarvia's hideo-out? And one of the tunnels lead to onme that had deep stalkers, nugs, and brontos corraled like pigs or goats. I'd imagine different places have such enclaves.

I'm not sure what they used to do but now it seems like they import much of their food from the surface if the nobles whining about how they want this succession thing to be over with so they can get their jam and the surface dwarves camped outside of Orzammar muttering about how Orzammar is going to starve if they don't let them in soon is any indication. Normally I'd say that would be an exaggeration but given that they only let surface dwarves in twice a year, it makes sense they'd get a six-month supply and then need to restock.

Their current diet, perhaps. I was referring to what they produce at home, the development of their own home-grown agriculture that kick started their deep civilizations. Like many civilizations, they get alot of food from trade, things they don't produce. Much of the surface produce seems to be luxury items. I doubt Orzammar would technically starve, but they would, like any surface civilization cut off from outside trade suddenly, fall on serious hardship and rationing measures.

They probably are just too accustomed to the fine surface foods. Men like them don't settle for nugs and deep stalkers and mushrooms.

Probably the dwarves grew mushrooms as well. Isn't their ale made from lichens or something? Or is Zevran right about it....

Lichens, moss, ect. So is their bread. I think their situation is similar to many societies: eventually, the size and scope of their civilization outgrew their ability to be totally self sufficient in food production, and they rely on trade now. Plus, years and years of trade have introduced new staples to their diet, things they have gotten used to.

I doubt that Skadi. That would mean that when Orzammar get's cut off in one of the endings ( Anvil preserved and Harrowmont King ) then they are doomed to all die to starvation.

If anything, the dwarves are too proud to rely on outside help to survive. Sure surface food is nice, but not needed.

I didn't say they would necessarily all starve. But they would signifgantly suffer and have to reply on hardship and austerity measures. Their diet would return to being very limited and basic, and perhaps certain parts of the population would have to be sacrificed in some way to ensure enough food for everyone else.

Think of Britain during WW2 and the Battle of Britain, where they were severaly cut off from food supply lines from other places that they had grown accustomed to. They had to impliment rationing, and their War diet became very basic and limited, because the imports were scant and not coming in.

Britain is a different case. The dwarves have Brontos, Nugs, Mushrooms and an abundance of Deep Stalkers and Mushrooms. I believe that only the nobles even eat surface food.

If food from the surface was so abundant as you make it seem, then dwarven ale would be made from grain, not lichens and mosses.

I know they eat mushrooms, but don't they have to be careful since they are toxic or tainted? I know eating too many will drive you mad.

Poisoned Mushrooms. Mushrooms that are grown by them, not so.
