My HN was Anastasia because I'd just seen the movie by the same name and so it was the first noble name that occured to me. My HM is Angélique because she's (loosely based) on a very shallow and self-absorbed girl I know of the same name. My HNM that barely made it out of Lothering and who will eventually get through the Morrigan romance and marry Anora (poor Alistair, though. He can't even be King after I spare Loghain) was named Michael because my brother of the same name entered his name in when I left the room to try and find inspiration.

My others (Ahria the CE, Caunira the EM, Laiarda the DE, and Reidin the DNM) were all just elf/dwarf name generators that I liked. Maybe if I make a new character their name will be more meaningful?

Mythology is an awesome source for cool and meaningful names. All kinds of names that sound archaic or fantastic enough to not be mundane (no one wants their legendary hero to be named Steve), and also have specific (usually heroic or epic) meanings and connotations.

Yea sounds better on a mage.

My canonical HN's name is Arcturus, inspired from Arcturus Mengsk from StarCraft and Saren's last name, which is Arterius. I just like to sound of it and it sounds like a roguish name. My other HN's name is Arthas, from warcraft. My elven mage's name is Alim, the default name. I like it because alim is Arabic means scientist or scholar, so I thought it was cool. My hedonist chaotic human mage's name is Salazar, because I love how the name sounds.

I like to take names from all over the place that fit in well with the concept of the character. I have a City Elf Rogue who I plan to run as a Duelist named Eryl (after Errol Flynn) fighting versus a Dwarf Commoner Rogue named Jain (after Jayne Cobb of Firefly fame) for who gets my Rogue playthrough.

Every name I've used in Dragon Age is a character in a novel I'm working on. I like to create my characters in rpgs because it helps me get a sense of who they are. Amalea Aeducan is based on a character who lost her family, so it fits with the story of being exiled.

YEEEESSSSS!!!! My commission from the fantabulous PayRoo is doneee! I told her to do something with Gilsa and Gorim and this is what she came up with. I love it SOOOOOOOOO much. Really went for the emotion of the scene.

Nice pic.

Side Note: DA dwarf fanartists really seem to like drawing embraces.

my version of Sereda Aeducan:  She does NOT have purple hair in my game. I was just trying to make my pics look nicer because they come out really dark ingame.

She looks great! Do you have a vision of how you'll play her? Sarah here likes to execute people because it's the Aeducan way. =p

I'm not quite sure yet. She was a bit uppity during the origin. lol, "why is that person speaking to me?" and I had that guy killed that was threatening that shaper and she had a good cry over Gorim. She was happy to join the Grey Warden's though, since they understand why darkspawn are evil.

Until I discovered this thread I for some inexplicable reason did not fancy playing as a dwarf. But the love for dwarves expressed here actually convinced me to try it out. I have now played through the DC origin story and then DN origin (also for the achievements). I surprisingly liked both considering my previous lack of interest in the dwarves. I have decided to complete the DN playthrough first as a male DN and then I will go for a female DC. So thanks to you all for convincing me to experience the Dragon Age universe from a dwarven point of view!

Btw, some questions about the DN playthrough: You get some fancy dwarven noble armor, a good enchanted dagger (for a low level rogue) and a merchant belt that gives you monetary gain before you go on the expedition where you are set up for murder. But after being arrested and exiled I lost it all. Will I get it back later somehow? If I had sold all my gear to the merchants in the Diamond Quarter before going on the expedition, would the money still be taken away from me after being arrested?

Yes, you get to keep whatever money you made during the origin; all items and weapons and etc are forfeit and you'll never get them back, although there is armor just like the Aeduncan armor that you can get later on.

Its best to just sell everything (except whatever dlc items you may have) and just take Ivos or the scouts armor, You can come out with 22 sovereigns if you make certain choices.

Thanks for the reply! Damn, this being my first playthrough I didn't know what would happen and that I should have cashed in before it was too late. Well, I will remember it for later.

I agree that the starting armor for DNs looks awesome. Too bad that the Dwarven Massive Armor that looks just like it is so bad stat-wise.

A lot of people don't like how the DN loses all their cool non-DLC items at the end of the origin, but I think it's a novel and interesting way to balance the issue of "Nobles and Royalty should not be wearing rough animal hide and rusty daggers" vs "Starting characters should have starting equipment." You do get a very decent armor after the exile, and the money you can keep from the origin goes a long way to getting good armor at Ostagar. The Quartermaster there has a full suit of heavy chain in his "other goods" inventory.

Yes, storywise it makes sense that you experience how you are privileged in every way and then all of a sudden you're stripped of it all.

Lorelai Brosca: I wanted something Germanic, feminine and dangerous that did not contain the syllables Frig, Frey, or Hild.  (And then I misspelled it. D'oh)

Irini Cousland: My first character, HNF.  I loved that you could make her bald.  About a decade ago, an NPC in a tabletop RPG I was running got her head shaved by the PCs, picking up the moniker Irini the Bald as a result.  So I went with the baldness and the name Irini (and then laughed and laughed and laughed when Leiliana told me how much she liked my hair).

@follis2 -- yay, welcome! I used to let DN be bribed to speak up for the surfacers for the easy 25g, but after reading toolset notes about all the other dwarves actually looked down on your character for doing as much, I became reluctant to get my money this way. (It's not as bad as taking Vaughn's bribe in the CE origin, but still.) If you get the shield giveaway from Alienware, you can get a shield that is worth 16g so I sell that in origins instead. =p
