Seeing all the awesome drawings around here really makes me hate that my high school didn't offer decent art classes.
At least I can write coherently! That's more than I can say about some people I know...even if they can sketch out an amazing piece in twenty minutes...

WRITING IS LIKE PISSING STONES FOR ME, OKAY? OKAY.
jack of all trades master of none as my mother would say...

I've been staring at photoshop, my screenshots, my wacom tablet...and gotten nowhere. I'm determined to learn, my problem is when I want to learn something...I want to learn it ALL immediately. It's as if I expect the knowledge to materialize immediately and manifest itself on paper. This is how photography started for me...tons and tons of frustration before I finally found my style and ability.

So how did you handle setting the relationship in the first conversation? Did you do the 'you, my friend, are ridiculous' option or the 'we've been down this road before, Gorim, let it go' one? I mean, the first one keeps them friends but the second sounds like they had a thing in the past...soignee wrote...
2. Had a fling with Gorim, did not romance him! They were friends and not lovers, and she respected him hugely. Almost had an affair with a member from the Artisan Caste when she was 16 and stupid, but was covered up when it appeared to be a ploy to bring disrespect and dishonour to her family. Said Artisan found himself at the bottom of the lava thanks to Gorim... The event, however, taught her to watch herself, but she still trusted her family implicitly despite it all.
Incidentally, when I was going through part of the DN origin yesterday for the manual pics I decided to actually try the 'Gorim, why are these people talking to me' options and I felt like such a horrible person...

find you local life drawing classes ans attend a few, really helps train your eye for drawing. It'll be as intimidating as **** to begin with, but if you go to a beginner's course it's more of a cameraderie.
I go to them because I fail at perspective still. Also draw something everyday, anything. It's what I do to stay in shape so my muscle memory (so to speak) doesn't disappear into nothing.
Also everyone who draws should sketch from life more, you have a tendancy to "cheat" and fall back on shortcuts when you draw normally and lifedrawing smacks it out of you.

My drawing skills are for crap -- I am not joking. I remember seeing a fellow artist who was amazing just say how much she loved to ink in photoshop because if she had drawn a hand wrong, she could just rotate it or enlarge/shrink it down. And a light bulb went off for me. I don't have to be perfect with my pencil drawings -- I can just clean it up in photoshop and that's really where I am able to come through. I have drawings where the head is way too big for the body, but I liked how it look so I left it alone with a mental note to just shrink it down. =p
I have some drawing books I like to reference as well. I no longer keep track of how much time I put into an art project because I used to feel like I sucked when an artist could get something amazing done in one day and it had taken me two weeks to finish mine. It doesn't matter as long as you get it done and that stuff adds up over time when you look back and go, DAMN, did I do that?! =p

Jess, it was the same for me. I used to be part of an art board during Everquest where screenshots and avatars were all the rage. There were many forms of art -- screenshot manipulation, drawings, and 3D/Poser, pixel dolls, and so on. I indulged in most of them, but never really being good at any because I was trying to have it all. So I sat down and thought about which path I'd really like to pursue and I picked learning to draw because it'd be my work and I wouldn't have to credit resources like I would for 3D or screenshots or doll bases. Plus pencil and paper was the cheapest combo. I think Poser is absolutely beautiful and expressive, but I see the kind of money my friends are pouring into buying models and clothing and I don't think I could ever justify the cost to my husband. (I still get envious because I want to play, too!)

That's how I got into photography. I was involved in alot of "sigtag" groups, and pixel groups and I wanted stuff to work with that was purely mine. I actually ended up contracted with a group run by a pinup artist, that let people buy packages of art/photos for sigtag use. But the dealines got to me and I didn't sign again.
I had the "damn did I do that?" moment yesterday going through photos I'd written off years ago as garbage...lol
I think if I could just get the basics down for drawing faces and bodies, I'd get somewhere. But so far...not so hot...poor Aedan played guinea pig for me...did not go well.

I'm not sure if it's just a dwarf thing or if all the races have the same noses due to my not really caring what my other characters look like as much but I really, really hate all the noses. They either look bad on the character or bad on the portrait...KnightofPhoenix wrote...

And apparently I associate my avatar's hairstyle with nobility in that game so much that even though I'm not really a fan of the other hairstyles my DE, mages, DC, and CE just couldn't use that style. It just looked off.

I started out with just focusing on faces. Y'know, avatar style artwork so I could get more comfortable. It's only this year that I'm really pushing myself to try to do the full body so I can keep improving. I'd really like to move away from the safe "standing" positions to more dynamic poses so more practice will get me there eventually.
I'm enclosing pictures of my attempts at creating Mammie Brosca before I finally found something I liked enough to work on in photoshop so you can see that even I suck at times.

Keep at it. Art is something that you learn. This one artist showed her work over a year where she started out and ended up with and I saw the dramatic improvement in her work. Her message was keep practicing. It's never too late. =p

Thanks for that, I actually love playng in photoshop. Fonts, gradients, textures, brushes (though they're a pain if credit is required). And the new upgrade has tablet settings built in...I may have to invest after the trial. I know there's a way to meet in the middle. maybe I'll just start with faces like you said. I think my dwarves would be easiest to start with. I did learn that once you get the head and face, the body can start as a stick figure and build up. Yay tutorials!
